    @sarah nz

    Lol no problem, always nice to mock the village idiot :)

    I fully expect The Americans to be on for a half dozen seasons personally. We’l be here next year after the third season has been announced thinking just the same, one season at a time.

    Said this before so many times, haters don’t cancel TV shows.

    @The End

    I see the Americans as another Damages. Three seasons and FX will have no choice but to axe it for awful ratings, though there won’t be a DirecTV to save its bacon.

  • Jonathan

    Is that a rerun of Real Housewives of Orange County getting 1.1 million!? The last new one was 1.7. That’s a great rerun number!!

    The Americans and Damages are nothing alike. And the ratings for The Americans aren’t, in any way awful.

  • rob60990

    6 seasons of The Americans? By then it will be lucky to be pulling a .1. :D

  • The End

    @rob60990

    Shame you have no idea what you’re talking about.

  • Torrid

    Ahem…@Vanquished – maybe you are an NHL apologist BUT….

    This site is all about national ratings – what point are you trying to make about the Boston market? that’s 1 city in this large country. The point is the NHL playoff games ratings were too low to register in the list of significant TV events being tracked on this site. We all know that NHL fan interest is in how it fares against the NBA.

    So check out the following Courtesy of Futon Critic via Nielsen
    ———————————————————–
    NBA Playoffs: Houston/Oklahoma City – Game 5 – TNT
    4.498 million viewers, #1; 2.611 million adults 18-49 (2.1 rating), #1
    NBA Playoffs: Boston/New York – Game 5 – TNT
    3.462 million viewers, #2; 1.857 million adults 18-49 (1.5 rating), #2
    ———————————————————–
    NHL Playoffs: Toronto/Boston – Game 1 – CNBC
    0.200 million viewers, #21; 0.101 million adults 18-49 (0.1 rating), #20

    of note also the 2 non-game NBA related shows below also had much greater traction nationally than the NHL games:
    INSIDE NBA PLAYOFFS TNT 12:32AM 2,157,000 1.1 rating
    NBA PLAYOFFS PRE-GAME TNT 7:00 PM 1,302,000 0.6 rating

  • Cameron

    Best real world in years :)

  • Nick

    @The End – actually velouria hit on a remarkably accurate comparison ratings wise. Damages S1 and The Americans are eerily similar. Look at the averages –

    Damages S1: 2.016 million viewers, 0.69 A18-49
    The Americans: 1.795 million viewers, 0.67 A18-49

    Damages started a bit higher in total viewers and a bit lower in A18-49 (3.658/.94 vs. 3.219/1.24) while ending a bit lower in both (1.693/.55 vs. 1.743/.62). It’s also tight lining up the ratings episode by episode, with Damages besting The Americans 7 out of 13 times.

    We’ll see if, unlike Damages, The Americans is a show that’ll be able to gain or at least maintain momentum in season two.

  • Elijah

    @Torrid
    Who cares? The NHL isn’t the NBA, nor is it trying to be.
    Of course the NBA is going to do much better on a national level. Ice Hockey is very regional and an overall niche sport. It’s like comparing ratings for cable shows on a channel like FX to something on CBS. Not to mention if you want to get real I can claim the NBA is a flop because it’s ratings aren’t anywhere near as big as the ratings that the NFL gets. But that’s not a fair or realistic comparison, neither is the NBA and the NHL.

    Most people, more like the vast majority, don’t even look up ratings, nor care about them. The people at this site are a very, very small minority.

    And where did the NBA vs NHL rivalry even come from? Sheesh, Sometimes I feel like I am the only person that likes both basketball and hockey.

  • LOL

    200k for the hockey game? my goodness. that is soooo sad.

  • Rooney72

    @rob60990

    The Americans has been one of the few shows I look forward to. I think it’s on a par with Homeland’s 1st season, and far better than Homeland’s 2nd. For you to denigrate it like you do begs the question: what would you RATHER be watching? Reruns of BBT? Robot Chicken? Dancing with The American Bachelorette?

  • kevin

    hope the real world increases some mroe

  • Pete

    You guys keep giving NHL data from cnbc. The featured games were on NBC sports. Using cnbc games as a reference for ratings isnt totally accurate. Can ANYBODY find what the ratings were for NBCSN games the last 2 days. That what you should use as a point of reference. And obv the NHL isnt anywhere near the other sports, its niche but Im interested in its ratings as are some others obv. Thanks

  • LOL

    @pete

    yeah but petey we keep having the whole “the nhl is a major sport” nonsense crammed down our throats. and then we see the ratings… nbcsn is too scared to even release the ratings. it’s pathetic.

  • LOL

    @pete

    or is it just that the numbers haven’t been released yet because they are so tiny and a sophisticated microscope is required to see them?

  • The End

    @Nick

    With respect, it’s irrelevant. I’m baffled by the new trend here by some people to pick random shows and compare. How Damages and The Americans did, are doing, or will do, bears no relevance.

    I laugh at anyone suggesting that because they think they’re doing roughly the same, that The Americans will collapse and be cancelled. That has to be the most ridiculous remark I’ve ever seen here. Which ironically came from Rob.

  • Nick

    @The End – of course it’s absurd to suggest it’ll be cancelled solely based on Damages performing at the same level. But having said that, it’s not just a random show either. These are both dramas on FX that saw extremely similar trends so I don’t think you can say it bears no relevance either. Let’s say it’s fair to be concerned about it. Certainly no way you can expect half a dozen seasons right now.

  • Ike

    If we’re going to compare The Americans to previous programs on FX, then hmmm, unless I’m terribly mistaken, several prominent FX programs including Justified, Archer, and It’s Always Sunny have started with ratings around 0.6 in their first seasons, then grown over the years due to word of mouth and DVD popularity, etc. Mad Men and Breaking Bad have followed similar trajectories as well, starting out with pretty low ratings in S1 of each and then growing. So there is no particular reason to focus on Damages and not on those other shows as points of comparison.

    We will see if The Americans can also gain momentum over time. I bet it can.
