Definitions:

DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data LiveLive+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.

Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.

Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate

Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

  • Joe.

Nobody would renew a TV show on DVR viewers. No company will want to advertise due to everyone skipping through the ads. Therefore, Smash is and will forever be canceled.

  • Freddy Arrow

“Concerned that Revolution didn’t appear :(”

This was the week of the Boston bombing, Revolution wasn’t on.

  • marc

Who cares about Friday Factor, its still flopping, and 9O21O Season 4 got renewed because of DVR so yes they should renewed 9O21O for a Finale 10 or even 8 season 6 finale

  • BigBrotherFan

Nope. NBC won’t waste another cent on HANNIBAL major BOMB!

The FOLLOWING on the other hand…

EXCELLENT NUMBERS can’t wait to see the numbers for the finale!

  • Potato

I’m new to looking at this thread– do networks usually take this into consideration, or do they assume people fast-forward the ads and ignore it?

  • Freddy Arrow

“I’m new to looking at this thread– do networks usually take this into consideration, or do they assume people fast-forward the ads and ignore it?”

Neither. The numbers the networks get, C3, measure actual commercial content watched within the first 3 days. No guesswork required.

I would guess that most people that DVR shows watch some commercial content, but probably only 10-20%, so while high DVR viewership is better than low, it’s affect on the bottom line is marginal.

  • John A

90210 is dead and deserves to be axed. CW only giving Nikita a renewel to syndicate it anyway.

  • Melanie

90210 still only ended up with a .5 even with DVR added in. That still sucks, regardless of what Nikita does. And anyway Nikita’s live rating is better (on Fridays)than 90210’s. I’m not saying Nikita is doing great — it isn’t. But 90210 isn’t doing any better.

  • halloween

TVD was hitting 2.0 in the fall/winter dvr…not a good sign

  • Samunto

Those who abandoned Revolution seem to have done it for good seen as there’re no DVR gains yet those were huge in the fall.

I still blame the ratings freefall on the storyline and no sense of direction after Danny got whacked!

Oh, and since i feel i don’t have a life, i spent the whole weekend watching Scandal from the 3rd ep of season 1 to last Thursday’s episode and DAMN! Those ratings highs are well deserved.

  • Antonio

@Samunto This was the week that Revolution was preempted for the bomb coverage. Looking at the DVR numbers from last week, there is still a huge gain from DVR viewing. It was in the top 5 for all three last week.

  • Samunto

    @Antonio
ooops now it seems i was just a disgruntled fan…. I take it all back. But still….

  • Jeffk

I got scared for a moment there when I didn’t see Revenge on the list, then I saw that it was for Apr 15th to 21st.

  • JJF

YAY for Castle! :D It’s really a strong player still.

  • tv fan

@Halloween TVD’s doing fine. The TVD episode that aired in the exact same week last year got the exact same Live+7 rating: a 1.6. It also got the same Live+ same day rating of 1.0. In fact, in Live+7 over the course of the season to date, season 4 is actually UP, in both demo and total viewers, on the same period in season 3 (episodes 1-19).

  • CrimTV

    @Freddy Arrow

Oh thanks, forgot Revolution didn’t air :)

  • Kate

Yay for Castle! I wish we knew what the 3 day ratings are, but I’m guessing it’s pretty safe to assume they’re pretty good too.

  • Edward

And Revolution’s DVR numbers will be way down for the following week because many people’s recorders didn’t register the episode as new. Same thing happened with Happy Endings on ABC. That’s why their ratings tumbled.

  • todd35

Neilson is still in the 20th century with their ratings. I’m sure I’m not the only one that watches shows not based on which one is the best “live.” I save the ones I like best so that I don’t have to be interupted by kids that are still awake, and comercial breaks. I watch shows that don’t require much of my attention like “The Voice” live. Even then, it is “DVR” incase I have something come up and can’t watch it.

Simply put I DVR almost everything that I like to watch, and hardly watch anything live.

In the 21st Century DVR is King!

  • Grey

    Wow at “Castle.’
