This is the final week of Renew / Cancel Index posts for the season, since the Fall 2013 broadcast TV schedules will be announced during the network upfront meetings next week, so as is our custom, Robert and I play Oddsmakers (hat tip, PTI) with our final renewal chance guesses of the season.

Our final guesses of RENEWAL chances:

    Robert Bill
CSI: NY CBS 10% 0%
Golden Boy CBS 0% 0%
Vegas CBS 0% 0%
Rules of Engagement CBS 30% 25%
Criminal Minds CBS 100%** 100%**

-
5/9 Update: Criminal Minds has been renewed.

5/10 Update: CSI:NY has been canceled. Vegas has been canceled. Rules of Engagement has been canceled. Golden Boy has been canceled.
-
In what's a recurrent (and boring) theme for our final guesses, Robert and I have no significant differences in our final CBS predictions. However, your guesses may be quite different, let us know in the comments.

**We'd both like to note that our predictions for Criminal Minds are based only on the ratings. The cancellation of the show is conceivably possible if terms cannot be reached with the cast, but we don't attempt to predict that likelihood.

To address the picky commenters out there who'll otherwise whine "You just give percentages, you never make an up or down call!", please take all of my guesses above 50% as "will be renewed" and those below 50% as "will be canceled" and you may interpret the "distance" from 50% as my level of confidence in the prediction.

For those who'd like to review the last Renew / Cancel Index numbers I'll produce for the season, enjoy:

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Wouldn’t it be awesome if this whole Criminal Minds issue is a conspiracy so that CBS will be forced to cancel it so that ABC can pick it up and put it on Tuesday 9pm? :lol:

  • Ultima

    @CrimTV
    @ProViewerShipNumbers

    What the?!

    That was pretty tame compared to his usual nonsensical ramblings!

    Or not. It looks like we’re going to be treated with day-by-day nonsense! :roll:

    Guess I’m one of the very few who realiy like Vegas and Golden Boy. Vegas has great characters and the actors who play them. The storyline is well written and the timeframe interesting. I will really miss it IF it is really canceled. Yes, I know I capitalized the IF. Trying to send that out to the netverse. Golden Boy as grown on me. The characters and storyline is interesting. The filming is kind of jerky and the sound is sometimes not clear. Surprising for a major network. Must be a matter of dollars. With respect to CSI NY. I really have enjoyed the stories and the actors. It has had a good run but I also hope it will be renewed too. There are still many stories to be told. It’s NY and that is always fluid. That’s my two cents for what its worth. Thanks for spreading the renewal and canceled news. I enjoy your site very much.

  • Samunto

    ABC must be salivating on the thought of acquiring Criminal Minds. It would be an expensive venture but would be a solid addition.

    As of now those holding back are the female cast members. Though it’s a given that CBS will renew the show anyway. But it’s interesting to see how poorly the stars of CBS procedurals are paid. Has that got to do with the fact that most skew old?

  • CrimTV

    @Ultima

    Lol ;)

    Btw how do you make text italic on this site?

  • Ultima

    @CrimTV

    Except use the less-than/greater-than brackets.

  • AJS

    My guesses:

    CSI: NY 0% (even if CM is cancelled)
    Golden Boy 0%
    Vegas 0%
    Rules of Engagement 0%
    Criminal Minds 100% (hopefully everyone comes back)

  • Ultima

    @Samunto
    ABC must be salivating on the thought of acquiring Criminal Minds.

    ABC Studios already put their final offer on the table. If CBS doesn’t renew the show, there won’t be a show for ABC to pick up.

  • AA

    Golden Boy 0%
    Vegas 0%
    CSI: NY 20%
    Rules of Engagement 60%
    Criminal Minds 100%

  • stevenD

    I can’t wait for next year when CBS will most likely be advertising “Moms” and Fox will be advertising “Dads”, just seems silly to me

  • shempaholic31

    I’m hoping that the producers of Vegas have incriminating photos of some CBS executives. Go Vegas!

  • Drew

    It would be nice if CBS would use the last episode of Golden Boy to show us how Walter Clark becomes NYC Police Commissioner. They tease you that his partner gets killed in some incident that happens in the precinct. How is Arroyo involved. This isn’t the greatest police procedural in the world. It deserves a better fate. I like the show even though some of the characters in the show aren’t likable. NYPD Blue is the standard on how all police shows are judged. It was one of the finest shows on television. The scripts and the stories were fantastic. Even though most of it was filmed in LA it felt like it was shot in New York. CBS demands huge ratings for their shows. They all can’t be big hits like Person of Interest. Having Michael Emerson who had such a huge following from Lost certainly didn’t hurt. Golden Boy had several new faces. It had to draw on it’s own merits. I will still watch CBS for two dramas. The Good Wife which is probably entering it’s last season and Person of Interest.

    Test to see if I understand how to make italics for this type of comment section.

  • Anna Bones Clarkwood

    Awesome! Thanks, Ultima.

    Can anyone tell me how to make that “blue quote block”?

  • Spencer

    No Criminal minds! I’ve read that Tomas Gibson and Joe got their contracts resigned, but AJ Cook and Kristen Vangsness are holding out because of how the woman have been paid much much less than the male cast members. I’m getting really worried right now…I just hope everybody can come back. And if the girls aren’t there…i know that the show will lose a lot of viewers because that is a real big cast change.

    I just hope that, god forbid if it gets cancelled, that they can make one more episode following this season’s finale because I heard that it will end with a cliffhanger…and for a show that’s been on 8 seasons, it deserves a good ending.

  • Blake Williams

    I hope you are wrong about Vegas…..I will miss it along with CSI:NY and Rules of Engagement

  • TheFrenchGuy

    Can someone explain to me how to write in italic, please !

  • Anna Bones Clarkwood

    @ The French Guy,

    Ultima explained a few posts above:

    Except use the less-than/greater-than brackets.

    My further help. Less than is also “,” & greater than is “.” aka comma/period with the shift “on”.

  • Holly

    @Anna Bones Clarkwood

    I’m pretty sure it’s the word ‘blockquote’ used just like the ‘i’ for italics.

  • Anna Bones Clarkwood

    I’ll try

    @Anna Bones Clarkwood

    I’m pretty sure it’s the word ‘blockquote’ used just like the ‘i’ for italics.
