This is the final week of Renew / Cancel Index posts for the season, since the Fall 2013 broadcast TV schedules will be announced during the network upfront meetings next week, so as is our custom, Robert and I play Oddsmakers (hat tip, PTI) with our final renewal chance guesses of the season.

Our final guesses of RENEWAL chances:

    Robert Bill
CSI: NY CBS 10% 0%
Golden Boy CBS 0% 0%
Vegas CBS 0% 0%
Rules of Engagement CBS 30% 25%
Criminal Minds CBS 100%** 100%**

-
5/9 Update: Criminal Minds has been renewed.

5/10 Update: CSI:NY has been canceled. Vegas has been canceled. Rules of Engagement has been canceled. Golden Boy has been canceled.
-
In what's a recurrent (and boring) theme for our final guesses, Robert and I have no significant differences in our final CBS predictions. However, your guesses may be quite different, let us know in the comments.

**We'd both like to note that our predictions for Criminal Minds are based only on the ratings. The cancellation of the show is conceivably possible if terms cannot be reached with the cast, but we don't attempt to predict that likelihood.

To address the picky commenters out there who'll otherwise whine "You just give percentages, you never make an up or down call!", please take all of my guesses above 50% as "will be renewed" and those below 50% as "will be canceled" and you may interpret the "distance" from 50% as my level of confidence in the prediction.

For those who'd like to review the last Renew / Cancel Index numbers I'll produce for the season, enjoy:

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    It’s taking toooooo long. Looks like no one’s going to blink. I hope CBS blinks because the show is going to lose three long time cast members if CBS doesn’t.

    @Rollie Dethloff

    There are so many major flaws in your schedule I don’t even know where to begin. This past year CBS only moved the Mentalist and Two and a Half Men to new nights while sliding 2 Broke Girls back a half hour. Yet you propose moving four dramas to different time slots, reducing both Amazing Race and Survivor by one cycle each, moving Survivor to a new night, canceling Criminal Minds, renewing CSI NY, moving Mike and Molly to an hour earlier, renewing Rules of Engagement, keeping Rules of Engagement and Undercover Boss on the Fall schedule, and pairing the multi-camera Rules of Engagement with the single-camera Crazy Ones for a Wednesday comedy block?

    The only things that you suggested that I can see them doing are moving Mike and Molly to 8:30 and potentially keeping Undercover Boss on the Fall schedule. A comedy block on Wednesday is unlikely but possible, but it would be all-new single-cameras and not Rules of Engagement, and would require moving Survivor to another night without timesharing with Amazing Race.

    Everything else you said is ridiculous. I’m surprised you didn’t try to anchor a night with Made in Jersey.

    Golden Boy is my favorite network show, but none of my friends ever heard of it. Why does CBS not promote its good dramas? Are the network programmers who pick up pilots the same ones that decide on renew/cancel? I think the latter are nitwits.

  • Charlie Goose

    Rules of Engagement has been on the verge of cancellation almost since it debuted, After seven seasons, it’s still chugging along. With Jeff & Audrey becoming new parents, Adam & Jen getting married, and Timmy almost certainly to be reunited with Russell, it could either be a catalyst for a fresh take on seven MORE seasons, or a fitting finale. I hope it gets renewed. It’s funny, and the cast is likeable.

  • harvey

    cancel golden boy and csi, and renew vegas and criminal minds

  • Ultima

    @Doc
    other actresses that bailed on shows, over perceived salary inequities, only to see the show go on to a lengthy run. (e.g. the girl that played Kate on NCIS, she left and disappeared).

    Sasha Alexander left NCIS because she couldn’t keep up with the time demand that a broadcast drama required, it had nothing to do with her salary.

    Also, she hasn’t disappeared, she’s doing quite well with Rizzoli & Isles.

    @Mrspapajohn
    Why does CBS not promote its good dramas?

    Golden Boy had plenty of promotion (including a Super Bowl spot). They stopped promoting it heavily once they decided to cancel it. Why throw good money after bad?

    Are the network programmers who pick up pilots the same ones that decide on renew/cancel?

    Yes.

    CSI NY 100% worlwide fan base that and some polls en petitions have been done and in most petitions they have had more that 3000 pepole sign in just 1 day the last runing petition stands on
    3,658 at time of writing this.

    they have set an goal for that one to 5000 max.

    and CBS isn’t CBS if they just dont pull an CBS again this year and as far as i know they didnt axe CSI miami but put it om an freze back in the closset for an renewal when they need an raitings up in %.

    Miami was the most expensive show of them al mainley because davids salary and Hummer got axed 1 jear before miami got axed in an horable way.

    But back to NY Garry has a big fote of confidence and so has serries and show runner Pam Vassey.

    So just renew CSI NY CBS and make billions of vieuwers world wide happy
