This is the final week of Renew / Cancel Index posts for the season, since the Fall 2013 broadcast TV schedules will be announced during the network upfront meetings next week, so as is our custom, Robert and I play Oddsmakers (hat tip, PTI) with our final renewal chance guesses of the season.

Our final guesses of RENEWAL chances:

    Robert Bill
CSI: NY CBS 10% 0%
Golden Boy CBS 0% 0%
Vegas CBS 0% 0%
Rules of Engagement CBS 30% 25%
Criminal Minds CBS 100%** 100%**

-
5/9 Update: Criminal Minds has been renewed.

5/10 Update: CSI:NY has been canceled. Vegas has been canceled. Rules of Engagement has been canceled. Golden Boy has been canceled.
-
In what's a recurrent (and boring) theme for our final guesses, Robert and I have no significant differences in our final CBS predictions. However, your guesses may be quite different, let us know in the comments.

**We'd both like to note that our predictions for Criminal Minds are based only on the ratings. The cancellation of the show is conceivably possible if terms cannot be reached with the cast, but we don't attempt to predict that likelihood.

To address the picky commenters out there who'll otherwise whine "You just give percentages, you never make an up or down call!", please take all of my guesses above 50% as "will be renewed" and those below 50% as "will be canceled" and you may interpret the "distance" from 50% as my level of confidence in the prediction.

For those who'd like to review the last Renew / Cancel Index numbers I'll produce for the season, enjoy:

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

The stern approach of networks seems a common theme of these last-minute decision, except for the Carrie diaries.

On May 10, 2013, Vegas was canceled by CBS.

  • vegasfan

I cannot believe vegas was canceled most original of all shows.

  • Sharon

The way this show was jacked around from time slot and days of the week, it is no wonder. I could never find it! I loved this show! And then Rules of engagement….a funny show… yet so called “reality shows” and the like get renewed????? I guess it is all about sex selling. I call it tv prostitution! Others call it entertainment. LOL…Big brother, Survivor, Big Race….all about stabbing each other in the back to get what you want.
Heck, Shirley Temple films would be cancelled in this day and age by the networks!

Love csi ny love csi love Vegas and golden boy get with it

  • Gary Hendinson

Vegas is to good of a show to be cancelled with a great case and a history of Vegas. We are putting on just pablum for the weak minded population. The CBS executives have to grow some smarts and know what we with the discretionary income like to watch. I hope one of the cable stations decides to pick it up.

  • mattzweck

it seems that all these channel networks all they like is reality TV shows that most people think are stupid. that’s why I like.watching movies or watching re-runs. Now a days I think some people just don’t have any brains.

  • ” BJ “

CBS Who did you ask for your ratings because you never asked me,so how do you decide whos opinion you respect. Obviously you ask around in the idiot crowd because those shows seem to be the only ones that survive on your network. I hope someone picks up Vegas and runs it against your idiot shows. Your known for trash but somehow you made the good choice to pickup Vegas and now dumb enough to let it go.

  • Rosie

I can’t believe CBS cancelled “VEGAS” !!! It was one of the best shows they had! Please re-consider!! CBS can’t afford to lose any more viewers……..everyone I know loved this show and the plots were getting better & better!!

    Thank you.

  • Jerry Olson

Vegas was a very good show, I really liked it and was eager to see the next show!
Go figure the shows I like they cancel and some other shows that they keep I can not stand!

  • loretta ziolkowski

I think CBS made a hugh mistake cancelling Vegas, it was one of the best programs on TV, why don’t the producers look to a cable station to pick Vegas up, lately that is where all the best programs today are anyway. CBS did not even give Vegas a chance, cancelling after only one season. HUGE mistake by CBS.
