Hidalgo, Velazquez and Pardo were also awarded a third Emmy as producers in the category of ”Outstanding Live Event Turnaround” for their role in the wall-to-wall coverage of the world’s most important sporting event.
“As part of the NBC Sports family, we are proud to have been recognized by the National Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences with these National Sports Emmy awards,” said Jorge Hidalgo, Executive Vice President of Telemundo Sports. “This award is a reflection of the phenomenal team effort provided by everyone across multiple divisions at Telemundo Media that helped make the coverage of the Olympics a smashing success.”
Telemundo’s coverage of the 2012 London Olympics broke Spanish-language audience records, delivering more than double the audience garnered in the previous summer games of Beijing 2008. Telemundo brought viewers the stories and triumphs of the Hispanic athletes that represented their respective countries in sports’ biggest global stage. The coverage featured marquee disciplines such as boxing, swimming, basketball and soccer with the Deportes Telemundo Olympic broadcast team on the call. The team was led by internationally acclaimed sportscaster Andrés Cantor and it included Jessi Losada, Mónica Noguera, Sammy Sadovnik, Edgar López, René Giraldo, Karim Mendiburu, Kaziro Aoyama, Oscar Guzmán, Leti Coo and Verónica Contreras, as well as several former Olympic champions who gave viewers a unique perspective of the Olympic experience.
Telemundo will continue to deliver the best action from the Olympics to its audience in the future, as NBC Sports Group has the rights to all Olympics through 2020, including the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
