About A Boy - Season Pilot

NBC has picked up Rand Ravich’s drama Crisis and J.J. Abrams’ drama Believe Jason Katims’ comedy About A Boy has also been picked up.

UPDATE:  Comedy Sean Saves The World has also been picked up.

UPDATE (2) DJ Nash comedy Family Guide has also been picked up

I hope About A Boy will be good. I like David Walton (liked him in the Hallmark HOF movie and in Bent but I never watched Perfect Couples). That kid with him was in 1600 Penn.

    1) Crisis – Never heard of it. If it’s like most of the freshman dramas the last few years, if it’s the only one it has a shot.

    2) Believe – Good companion to Revolution, to try to rebuild a Monday Drama night.

    3) Sean Saves the World – If it’s anything like The New Normal, I think it will be a fast talking mess. More like Will and Grace, meh. It might be okay.

    4) About a Boy – Depends on how many people ravenously follow Nick Hornsby.

    5) Family Guide – If on Thursday, cool. If on Tuesday/Wednesday, let it go. Tuesday’s I follow Raising Hope, and Wednesday I’m on ABC, so it’s got to be fairly good for me to give it a chance. Second stringers sitcoms aspiring for a Thursday night slot has been a terrible idea the last two years, may as well rotate reality shows or put in midseason shows on those days.

My dream NBC comedy schedule (based on these pickups)-

    Wed-
8: Betty White’s Off Their Rockers
8:30: Sean Saves the World (new)

    Thu-
    8: Parks & Recreation
    8:30: About a Boy (new)
9: The Michael J. Fox Show (new)
    9:30: Family Guide (new)

    Thoughts?

  • Chris J

So it looks NBC has 4 family comedies now. I wonder if their plan is to air them all on Thursday and completely rebuild the night as a family TV night. That could be good counter programming to CBS’s comedies which have a different appeal.

  • Anna Bones Clarkwood

Nick, Betty should be spackle only. She’s to old for a full season order & I don’t think her show can really support a full season. Her ratings were only spackle worthy this season.

I think it’s too risky to put P&R up against TBBT. In your schedule it’s the only returning comedy & thus if this is another horrible comedy season for NBC, they will have to do a lot of pity renewals. Even if P&R is one of them, I don’t want the show to go out with a whimper as it almost certainly will after s7 if it has 2 years vs TBBT.

I hope Community, or I guess Go On is given the TBBT timeslot. Or, what I think would be best, make that a family drama hour, maybe Parenthood (if Tues 10pm is not available)?

  • Jayson

Since I don’t know what each show is about, which shows are people labeling as family comedies?

  • Chris J

    @Nick

I was thinking that’s another good option for Thursday night. Each of those comedies would probably be compatible with each other, and I think P&R would probably be able to hold it’s own at 8pm.

If NBC picks up another multi cam, they may pair that with Sean Hayes instead of Betty White, but if not, that looks like a solid schedule.

  • American

With all these comedy pick-ups, I can see NBC clean-slating Thursdays and moving P&R to Tuesdays or Wednesdays and Community to Fridays. Even if P&R remains on Thu., that night might improve for NBC.

  • David

Really no surprises here NBC did what I expected

  • nwt0

If Family Guide does get picked up by the Peacock, they’re definitely going to have to change it’s name. Otherwise, Seth MacFarlane’s lawyers may be in close contact with NBC and Seth might just cancel the sequel to Ted if things don’t go his way.

  • a p garcia

I wonder how many of these shows will BOMB.

  • pilotpilot

    Im seeing a Mondays @ 10 for Blacklist. a Believe-Revolution block Tuesdays @ 9 and 10.

  • Patrick Ausgewahlt

Consider that NBC has the Winter Olympics all through May Sweeps. They can air all there shows in two sets. 11 in the fall and 11 from March to May.

  • HV

Hooray for Crisis, the one NBC drama I may watch next year!
I may watch About a Boy.
I really hope Undateable gets picked up!

  • mando

NBC needs to put multicam sitcom on Tuesday followed by Parenthood.
That will match the audience target.
On Wednesday, NBC should put dramas from 8 to 10.
On Thursday, NBC can build a comedy block.

  • Alan

Remember NBC just picked up Chicago PD, the Chicago Fire spinoff. Here’s what I’d schedule for fall:
    MONDAY:
    The Voice-8
    Blacklist-10

    TUESDAY:
    The Voice-8
    Revolution/Believe-9
    Revolution/Believe-10

    WEDNESDAY:
    Chicago PD-8
    SVU-9
    CF-10

    THURSDAY:
    P&R-8
    MJF show-8:30
    NEW COMEDY
    NEW COMEDY
    NEW DRAMA

That is all in my opinion.
