In a statement to E! News he confirmed the long-rumored news:

"Yo! Yo! Yo! To put all of the speculation to the rest, after 12 years of judging on American Idol I have decided it is time to leave after this season," he says. "I am very proud of how we forever changed television and the music industry. It's been a life changing opportunity but I am looking forward to focusing on my company Dream Merchant 21 and other business ventures."

I thought he’d never go. Wow. Still won’t go back to watching though.

  • dan

    Bring back Dunkelman.

I know all 4 are expected to be canned.

However, I think that would be a mistake.

    Keith’s reasonings for staying.
    1. He is very easy to work with & to get a team of judges that get along together is apparently very helpful.

    2. He comes cheap.

    3. He is a HOT Country WGWG.

    4. He plays both nice & constructive sides very well.

    5. As far as producers goes, he is willing to work with them on the producer manipulation side of things.

BTW, while I like the idea of Past Contestants as judges, I think I’d prefer 3 spots be record producers for each major record conglomerate & 1 spot be a rotating former Idol who also is that weeks Mentor.

I hope this will make the ratings collapse. I’m so tired of untouchable AI!

  • Anna Bones Clarkwood

    @Bitter Ringer Fan,

AI isn’t untouchable at all anymore as the ratings compared to last year really fell or haven’t you heard?

  • greyfm_dan

“Randy… Simon Cowell on the phone for you. Something about taking a Mr. Reid’s place on the ‘X something-or-other’?”

  • Cj morton

So does this mean that the Justin Bieber rumours could possibly be true??…..

  • Alan

It was about time! Now they can re-start it with winners or excontestants that are very popular. They should bring Adam Lambert or Kelly Clarkson. I would watch again.

  • HV

Yes! And now American Idol will die! Soon we will see more room on Fox’s schedule and less competition on Wednesday night January-May.

  • Kaylie

Jimmy Iovine needs to come to the panel!!! Along with Kelly Clarkson & probably Babyface.

  • D

Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert as judges. NOW THAT would make me watch Idol again!

  • Scandalfan

Are you guys out of your minds? Nikki is the best judge in the panelist.

  • Aron

Randy Simon Paula Demi X factor ?

  • MVProductions44

I don’t understand why everybody hates Nicki so much? For her not to be talented, her album sales say otherwise! Plus she is far more entertaining than rambling Mariah Carey! Mariah should have used her experience and critique the contestants instead of being another over-ly sweet J’ Lo!

So good to see Randy leave. A.I. Needs to revamp all the judges if the show has a slight chance of making it.

  • Scifibookguy

Keith Urban is the only good judge on the show, currently. Mariah is like Paula, she only says nice things. Nikki is just messed up, and Randy has been there too long.

I agree with the person that said Jimmy Iovine should be on the judges panel :)

  • Networkman

Jimmy Iovine, Kelly Clarkson and Harry Connick Jr should be on the panel.

  • PurpleDrazi

Did he really say “Yo! Yo! Yo!” at the beginning or is E!News just messing with us. Because if he did, someone needs to have a serious talk with that man and explain it’s not 1980 anymore.

Look for Ryan Seacrest to announce next week that he is leaving “Idol” to move to NBC’s “Today Show” this Summer, replacing Matt Lauer, who will likely sign a development deal with NBC/Universal for a daytime talk/variety show starting in 2014.

My guess: Erin Andrews of Fox Sports will become the new hostess of “Idol”.

And having former “Idol” winners and finalists as judges might be a great idea.

  • Xavier

Translation: “The producers and I talked, and we both came to the realization that, honestly, without Simon and Paula, I’m really much like Cara DioGuardi, that is, a monumental waste of oxygen and space. So, I’ll be seeing if Journey needs my help on a new album … what? They don’t? Really?? OK … So, I’ll be seeing what other avenues are open to me. Also, I’ll see if I can pick up some more names to drop. The Voice sucks. Peace out, DAWGS.”
