Is it me or has Days of Our Lives been getting more interesting lately. As a fan of days when I was real young in the 90s and 2000s I just started tuning into the show again after a 8 year break.

I started tuning in a month ago when Chloe/Daniel were the focus of the show and ever since that ended it has gotten better. I hope it keeps getting better. It was “OKAY” a month ago but is good now. I surprisingly like the Will and sonny duo. I hate Nick can’t wait until someone takes him down. Glad to see Kristin Dimera again. Sami is interesting as usual, but not sure if she belongs with EJ or Rafe as I have never seen either as a couple.

The last time I watched Days they were introducing EJ to Sami and I believe that was 8 years ago or so and it was with the whole military storyline where Sami dressed up as a man? Either way I hope all soaps rebound next week!!!!!

I just looked at the 2012 – 2013 season to date ratings posted by Bex (and Wikipedia) and those ratings don’t look accurate to me. GH has been ranging between 1.8 and 2.1 all season and so couldn’t possibly have a 2.3 season to date rating. The others seem high to me too. I’m guessing Y&R is closer to 3.4, B&B is closer to 2.4 and DAYS is closer to 1.9. Does anyone know what’s going on, or is my math wrong? :)

GH has lost all its momentum from the 50th anniversary and Nurses Ball by taking the focus off of Luke&Laura, Frisco&Felicia, Anna&Robert, Lucy&Kevin, Jax&Brenda, Robin&Patrick, the couples we all want to see, putting them on the backburner and giving us dumb storylines like the Pickle-Lila thing and Lulu’s amnesia. I couldn’t care less! When will GH get a clue that it was ROMANCE and ADVENTURE that made this show great?

  • Chrisann D

I don’t know why all soaps went down last week. I do know its not because I have stopped watching…….. Some though seem to be less interesting than they have been “cough GH cough” But and this is a big BUT I still enjoy it (GH) more than any other soap on TV right now. Enjoying OLTL and AMC also. GO SOAPS!!!

  • PatF

David, actually you need to be looking at percent of viewer loss, not just total.

Y and R has almost 2 mil more viewers than GH, but lost only 15,000 more. Of all the soaps they had the SMALLEST loss last week, and actually performed the best.

B and B was the worst losing over 4 percent of its viewers over the previous week.

  • David

Young and The Restless is still horrible. And it will only get worse with Jill Farren Phelps at the helm.

I remember when she first came to GH, despite some of her changes there were people who were happy with her but also a lot of people who were not. As time went on the viewers who were happy with her started getting frustrated at her changes.

If you look at the numbers while B&B, Days and GH were still up in total viwers from one year ago. Y&R was the only show that was down from one year ago

  • JayTN

Grace…the weekly Nielsen ratings do not take into account the numbers from DVR usage after 3 or 7 days. The season-to-date ratings do, which would explain the upward tick that the soaps get compared to just looking at the weekly numbers.

  • PatF

    David,

Y and R is up 38,000 over a year ago. I guess you are seeing what you want to see.

I get the Y and R bashing. Other soaps fans are annoyed that it’s been the number one show now for 25 years.

    I get it.

  • PatF

And GH is again at their all time low in the 18–49 demo. See where it says “ties low”?

  • Mike

To get a full view of how bad the last few weeks have been for at least 3 of the soaps (Y&R, GH, & B&B) you can look at the last 4 weeks of ratings. Daylight savings time, preemptions, bad stories, whatever you want to call it have hurt three of the four soaps big time. Hopefully May sweeps will see some improvements.

In each of the categories reported by SON (given to them by Nielsen) you can see what your favorite show has lost or gained in the last 4 weeks as far as viewers. This is from the week of April 8th to this last week reported (4 ratings reports). This is after taking gains or losses for each week and seeing what the overall outcome is. Ranked from gain to highest loss.

    Total Viewers

    1) Days of Our Lives – overall gain of 86,000 viewers
    2) Bold & the Beautiful – overall loss of 140,000 viewers
    3) Young & the Restless – overall loss of 338,000 viewers
    4) General Hospital – overall loss of 341,000 viewers

    18-49 Female Viewers

    1) Days of Our Lives – overall gain of 27,000 viewers
    2) Bold & the Beautiful – overall loss of 18,000 viewers
    3) Young & the Restless – overall loss of 73,000 viewers
    4) General Hospital – overall loss of 124,000 viewers

    18-34 Female Viewers

    1) Days of Our Lives – overall gain of 31,000 viewers
    2) Bold & the Beautiful – overall loss of 14,000 viewers
    3) General Hospital – overall loss of 20,000 viewers
    4) Young & the Restless – overall loss of 22,000 viewers

Days of Our Lives is the only show still showing a gain. And even though the other 3 shows had 1 really good week in the last 4 still overall their losses outweigh what they gained.

  • Mike

    @Grace,

The Season to Date ratings include live plus 7 days of DVR viewing. The ratings posted here each week from SON do not include but live plus 1 day of viewing. We never see the weekly Live plus 7 ratings but they are always higher than the live plus 7 — so the season to date averages won’t match what we see.

If a person does not watch within 7 days then it doesn’t count at all.

  • David

@Pat I have nothing against Young and The Restless. It’s producer Jill Farren Phelps however I do.

I watched her ruing General Hospital and its legacy characters during her reign. She is slowly starting to do that to Y&R.

@ Mike aka the artist formerly known has Richard how are your blood sugars today? You know if you took care of them and yourself your eye sight would be ok and you could watch the AMC and OLTL reboots online

  • David

Big week on GH this week

Monday May 13th will turn out to be a very intriguing day for fans of General Hospital when Kristen Alderson, Roger Howarth and Michael Easton return to the ABC soap in newly created roles.

According to GH head writer Ron Carlivati, who tweeted “Three big stars return to General Hospital on Monday! Brace yourselves, #GH fans, you’re in for a wild ride! #GH50”

Then according to Access Hollywood all that they would tease said, “Details of their return — and their new roles — are being kept very hush-hush by producers.”

  • Mike

JayTN — sorry I did not see that you had answered Grace’s question already.

  • Derrick

David, I don’t see nothing wrong with Y&R right now except the music!!!!
Yes, people are worried about JFP but right now she’s doing good atm!

And YES…………I’m surprised by the rating of Jeanne Cooper’s last appearance!

  • Mike

    @Derrick,

I am not really shocked. Friday’s now are typically bad days for soaps anyway. Then on Daytime Royalty someone posted that some areas on the West Coast did not air Y&R during the day but in the early hours of Saturday morning.

They did not say if other shows aired that way or not.

Plus it wasn’t advertised as her last episode or anything so people weren’t really inclined to tune in. And many outside of the Internet may not have even really known Jeanne Cooper was sick.

  • David

Funny how Richard oh now posting as mike and his diabetic poor eye sight one minute says that one area pre-empting the shows has not effect on the ratings when it is a show he likes. But when its a show he likes to hate on and likes to make his punching bag, it isnt an excuse Richard aka Mike you should have watched what you ate and kept your sugars under control, then you would have better eye sight my good friend

  • PatF

No, Y and R is not horrible.

Horrible is how you’d describe everything LML did.

I don’t like Jill either, but thankfully she isn’t writing the show.

A lot of GH fans think the current team there is horrible. I can’t say that since I haven’t ever watched the show.

  • Grace

Thanks JayTN and Mike! I’m glad to hear that there is a system for including DVR viewing as well. So the remaining soaps really are doing better overall than last season, which is definitely a good thing. Let’s hope that they can continue to improve, and that there will be no more cancellations!

Anytime you feel the need to take it personal, it’s time to step away from the computer. We’re all adults(some)and we all like to give our own opinions on the ratings, the networks don’t exactly care about our banter, so no need to get bruised feelings because someone dislikes your soap.
