Southland S5

UPDATE: Monday Mornings has also been canceled.

TNT has cancelled Southland after five seasons, issuing the following statement:

TNT has made the difficult decision not to renew Southland for another season. We are enormously proud of Southland, which stands as one of the best police dramas ever made. Executive producers John Wells, Chris Chulack and Jonathan Lisco, along with creator Ann Biderman and our partners at Warner Bros. Television, have given us five seasons of powerful, unforgettable storytelling, for which we are deeply grateful. We also want to thank the amazing cast for their impassioned, no-holds-barred performances, and the production team for their tenacity shooting on the streets of real-world Los Angeles. We wish everyone associated with Southland the very best.

  • Dillan

The ratings weren’t great, but I was expecting a final season renewal, for the fans.

  • The Original J

This is why showrunners shouldn’t do cliffhangers when they know a decent chance exists that their show won’t be renewed.

  • Anthony Parello (AP076)

    Now this one really hurts!!!!

  • MichaelChickless

Friday, Bloody Friday. (to paraphrase U2)

  • John A

But the ratings were going up the last few weeks. This sucks. I knew it would happen though. Idiots that wrote the finale with a cliffhanger.

  • Ron

NOOOOO! This is the first and only cancellation that hurts

  • Greg

The ending wasn’t so much as a cliffhanger as an open end. I think it works this way just fine too.

  • Rod

    That sucks! :(
Enlightened, Boss and Southland all cancelled. :(

  • Tom

Thanks TNT for rescuing this series and giving us five great seasons. My sole regret is that we won’t find out what happens between Officer Ben Sherman and his crazy teacher girlfriend.

  • Jay S.

    Once again, quality means nothing.

  • catocony

Man, one of my favorite shows. This one stings a bit. Does Coop live or die? I guess we’ll never know.

  • EatMorePez

Look on the bright side: it could have disappeared after just 7 episodes. We ended up getting 36 additional, and great, episodes.

  • Lena

Why the hell networks can’t tell the showrunners their show won’t be renewed BEFORE it actually ends? At least they have the opportunity to wrap up the storylines…

  • Andrea

    So Rob, Bill:

I thought you said shows are rarely oficially “canceled,” they just don’t show up on next year’s schedule.

Ha! Shows have been canceled left, right and center of next week’s upfronts!

Note that, with the exception of Southland, none of these cancellations have had official network announcements. It’s the producers, actors, and studios who are informing reporters of the cancellations.

I am not watching this show but TNT’s ratings are not looking good and I think they should have renewed Southland. What a stupid decision!

  • Dan

@Andrea – Networks always officially cancel shows especially cable networks. Sometimes a network will never announce anything, especially Comedy Central but TNT always does or the creators will issue a statement on twitter.

Next TNT show cancelled – Monday Mornings

  • The Zapper

The only reason to watch TNT just got cancelled.

  • The End

Shows do get cancelled behind the scenes and there sometimes is a small delay between this and what gets announced publicly.
