Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- May 12, 2013):

The cancellation bear went 15-2 on his ABC predictions over the course of the 2012-13 season. (vs. 21-1 in the 2011-12 season)

The bear missed on the predicted renewals of How To Live With Your Parents and Body Of Proof. BOP is the only show the bear's missed his prediction on two years in a row on opposite sides of the ledger. At least he's guaranteed to not go three in a row!

With that the cancellation bear bids the 2012-13 season adieu and begins his summer hibernation. The bear and his Renew/Cancel Index posts will return in September. Happy Summer!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

It’s kind of sad that they cancelled Malibu country after one season. I didn’t watch it, but it was cool to see Reba on tv again

  • JacobYates

HTLWYPFTROYL must have had serious problems production wise, or ABC didn’t want another A23 fiasco. Its ratings were serviceable.

  • JacobYates

BOP was a slippery one. You guys couldn’t catch a break on your predictions these past 2 years!

  • PurpleDrazi

That poor bear looks exhausted! Must be all the extra chasing and feasting he did in the past couple of days.

I am sorry for the fans of Body of Proof. I know it hurts to lose a show you like. That being said, I’m kind of glad. I think Dana Delany deserves better.

BOP likely to move to TNT USA or WGN … Hoping and praying it finds new home on cable

  • Fred

I guess BOP wasn’t profitable enough. Mildly surprised it wasn’t renewed.
How To Live also surprise me. Modern Family can’t find a suitable companion. I thought ABC would be patient with this one and nurture it like they are doing with Neighbors.
Neighbors will most likely be shifted to Fridays after LMS.

When is ABC supposed to release their schedule?

WGN picks up BoP as the first of a number of shows it will use to create a new network after they (Tribune) declines to re-up with the CW in 2016.

Still not sure what to make of HTLWYPFTROYL being cancelled. This isn’t one of those CBS ‘cancel your lowest rated comedy’ situations. I guess creative/financial considerations make the most sense. *shrug*

  • DM

I think the How To Live With Your Parents decision was made based on past history. Happy Endings and Don’t Trust the B did relatively well in the post Modern Family slots but when they moved their ratings were a disaster. HTLWYP got really similar ratings that both of those shows got in that time slot so ABC didn’t want to chance it happening a third time. Maybe?

All the people saying HTLWYP is another Apartment 23 in the making should keep one thing in mind: Apartment 23, and Happy Endings before it were among the long-line of shows that attempt to copy the format off Seinfeld and/or Friends.

Shows like this have decreasing returns, which isn’t surprising, since the model of a group of close-knit about young thirty-somethings living in one of the country’s three largest cities, in apartments they shouldn’t be able to afford, and getting into wacky hijinks isn’t something that most people can identify with. I’m not saying that’s necessarily a bad thing writing-wise (I watched every available episode of all three shows), just that most people don’t seem to go out of their way to watch it if it’s not on after something they really like.

HTLWYP is a show about a dysfunctional family, and most people at least know one of these families, if not the particular situation. Moreover, it’s about an increasingly common phenomenon called “boomerange children,” even if the prompt isn’t the reason most young people have for moving back with their parents. I recently found out when talking to my father only watches three sitcoms, and HTLWYP is one of them. He watches it for the reasons I mentioned: it has situations he can identify with (though not the booomerang kids, not yet anyways).

Admittedly, he’s just beyond any of the demographics Nielsen looks at, but given that it’s a family comedy, if ABC tries to build it up they way they did with The Neighbors and Suburgatory, they’d probably find it does better than the first (which isn’t really a family show even though it has families), and at least as well as the second, when they moved it to a new night without Modern Family support.

OT: Why is ABC still airing a new episode of The Family Tools on Wednesday?A encore episode of The Middle or Modern Family would do much better. Also it seems like it’s dragging the other ABC Wednesday shows down.

  • Linda Mitchell

Not Castle!!! We love, love, love Castle so do my friends!!!

  • Jonay

I hate when they give fans false hope then when people like you try to tel them the truth they get mad (-_-)!

Welcome the Cancellation Bear’s world ;)

  • Boiler

I can’t imagine any of the new shows drawing audience sizes loke Body of Proof and Malibu Country. The demo measurement is idiotic these days

    @ April inside voice sugar:-)
As for abc hum I don’t think they know what to do maybe they should have looked for a better batch of pilots this year.
