The Cancellation Bear went 15-2 on his ABC predictions over the course of the 2012-13 season. (vs. 21-1 in the 2011-12 season)

The bear missed on the predicted renewals of How To Live With Your Parents and Body Of Proof. BOP is the only show the bear's missed his prediction on two years in a row on opposite sides of the ledger. At least he's guaranteed to not go three in a row!

With that the cancellation bear bids the 2012-13 season adieu and begins his summer hibernation. The bear and his Renew/Cancel Index posts will return in September. Happy Summer!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Actually it was pretty simple decision as to why HTLWYP was cancelled… The two final shows in contention were HTLWYP and The Neighbors, and Neighbors being produced by ABC studios whereas HTLWYP by 20th Fox… It only made financial sense to keep the homegrown show and clean house with the rest…

  • Robert Ford

    @Syd
    That’s what I assumed. The ratings gap between the two is quite large (a gap of .25 on the cancellation index, with HTLWYP being above average and The Neighbors being just below the .9 which is considered a lock for renewal, and thus in toss-up territory), however Chalke and Perkins probably don’t come cheap, and as you said, ABC is producing the Neighbors. (Greg Garcia had a similar complaint as to why 30 Rock was renewed over My Name Is Earl, though I believe the ratings then were closer than these two shows.)

    However I keep hearing that ABC is trying to predict future results, based on the trend of Happy Endings and Apt. 23. I sincerely hope this is not the case, that ABC is not that stupid (especially since if they’re taking non-ratings factors into account, they should consider their own efforts to kill the show by airing it in May HTLWYP in May, and then to promptly scheduling it amidst repeats for several episodes right after the premier). Each of the three was quite different, and Happy Endings and Apt. 23 did seem to attract the same small audience after ABC put them on their own. I don’t see any reason to assume that HTLWYP will perform the same as those two *yet* other than the fact that they premiered it last minute and it still managed to get decent ratings in May.

    So my suspicion and hope is that ABC is keeping the Neighbors and tossing HTLWYP for financial/in-house reasons. That being the case, does anybody else get the feeling that The Neighbors would be able to fall almost to Happy-Endings level ratings and still be nursed through to syndication?

    I love ABC but they really screw me over with their shows.

    Sad to see 666 Park Ave., Don’t Trust The B-!, happy Endings and Last Resort go.

    Particular saddened by Happy Endings!

    On the FLIP SIDE
    I watch the most shows on this network. Their shows are always excellent and I never miss an episode. They take risks as a network much more than the god awful CBS (BTW, Am I the only one that feels like THE GOOD WIFE should be an ABC show?).

    People on here moaning about Body Proof- Look I’m sorry. I really am. You enjoyed this how but the fact is MOST OF YOU ARE OVER 50 and the networks could care less about you. This show was not doing very well. Anytime I see a show that goes under a 1.5 consistently and isn’t on Friday is dead. The show attracted a fair number of viewers but I guess they don’t matter. I saw 2 episodes of this show-Both in 2011. It was OKAY but really would of exceled on a network like CBS. because it was on ABC they where trying to make Delany character seem young hip and sexy none of which she is! It came across as unintentionally funny when granny was flirting with the detective character ?? CBS would dress her and have her act accordingly but on ABC they are used to younger viewers. That isn’t going to click. Not shocked to see it go.

    NASHVILLE is the breakout show this season with critics. It continues to be one of the most well acted strongest shows airing. It’s really picking up now and all the plots are unfolding the way a critically acclaimed gem like this would have them unfold. Connie Britton, Hayden, Powers Booth, Eric Close all deserve emmy and golden globe nominations for their stellar work. I’m happy it’s not doing Horrible or anything in the ratings. I believe with Chicago Fire out of the way next season it will go up. People will catch up over the summer and it will retun stronger and even better!

    Glad Revenge and Scandal are back but they really should of stuck Revenge somewhere else.

    NO CHANCE IN HELL!
    If that show did the .7′s Happy Endings was doing on ABC Friday why would ABC put up with it for 2 more seasons if they weren’t willing to do that for Happy Endings? makes no sense

  • JON

    TNT or USA! Please pick Body of Proof up!!!!! :”"”(

  • R N Taylor

    I believe Malibu Country was basically cancelled before it began It had improved greatly the last three episodes. Reba will surface again soon and she will be just as great as ever. I do not believe this show was given a chance.

  • S WOOD

    Body of Proof is one of the two or three shows I watch on ABC. Extremely sorry it is being canceled.

  • Rockjock1037

    I feel sorry for those of you that think ‘Liking’ a Facebook page is ever going to save a show…

  • Robert Ford

    @BigBrotherFan:
    Happy Endings is a Sony show. We know that there’s a gap of at least .25 in the allowances they’ll make for an external vs in-house production, though part of that’s probably the Chalke/Perkins salaries. Before its Friday move Happy Endings was pulling ratings that put its renew-cancel index at .61. Add the .25 in-house bonus, and that’s really .86, minus whatever amount factors unique to HTLWYP (like actor salaries) factor in, which still probably leaves it in toss-up territory.

    Or so I think. I don’t really know how one would begin to calculate the cost effect of barely successful in-house shows versus moderately successful foreign studio shows without seeing the books that show the profit margin for each show and the effects of syndication revenue, but it’s clear that it’s a very cheap show.

    (Or maybe ABC really is assuming that any show with a May premier that doesn’t match or exceed its lead-in, even if it’s their third highest-rated comedy, is guaranteed to go into ratings freefall come next fall. This seems to be the gist of the argument of a lot of people, which is retentionist, pessimistic, and absurd.)

    I do not understand why ABC canceled a quality show like “Body of Proof.” Is there any chance that another network will pick it up for the 2013-2014 season?

  • Holly

    @Elaine Raymond,

    Is there any chance that another network will pick it up for the 2013-2014 season?

    No.

  • George gabelman

    Don’t cancel Red Widow good show also Body of proof. New shows do nothing for me.

  • ANGELUS

    out of 5 shows on abc the only thing i will watch on them next season is Once upon a time. everything else i liked they cancelled.

  • The End

    @Elaine Raymond
    @Is there any chance that another network will pick it up for the 2013-2014 season?

    I’ll be honest with you. This talk about any show being picked up by another network after it has been cancelled is complete and utter garbage. Usually any interested networks show an interest prior to said show ending. When you hear nothing beforehand, the show is dead.

    Infact, when any show is cancelled, consider it dead. Don’t let people give you false hope.

  • Janet Clewell

    Very upset that Vegas is being cancelled. Just getting to really enjoy the show and the characters.
    I love the following shows: Revenge, Scandal, Greys Anatomy, Nashville and Castle. Don’t cancel any of them……

  • Bunny

    I really like Mark Valley in Burdon of Proof.He is a good actor needs better stories. Glad to see Revolution is going to be back. Love this..

  • Gerry

    ABC needs to keep Body of Proof on the air. Dana Delany is not in any other show right now, and she plays such a great part in this show. Keep her on the air!

  • Rebecca

    Family Tools is being replaced tonight and on June 5th (I think) with MF reruns. I wonder how much longer before they bench it for good.

  • rob60990

    ABC needs to cast Dana Delany on its HIT drama Revenge!

  • Pauline

    My family likes – BODY OF PROOF, CASTLE, NCIS, BLUE BLOODS, BONES, ELEMENTARY, PERSON OF INTEREST, BIG BANG, MALIBU COUNTRY, LA CIS, MENTALIST, MODERN FAMILY, VOICE, AND A FEW OTHERS.
