The Cancellation Bear went 20-0-1 on his CBS predictions for the 2012-13 season. (vs. 20-2 in the 2011-12 season)

The "tie" was because the bear had The Mentalist predicted as a "toss up" at the time it was renewed.

With that the cancellation bear bids the 2012-13 season adieu and begins his summer hibernation. The bear and his Renew/Cancel Index posts will return in September. Happy Summer!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

-
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    I’m still sulking a bit over CSI: NY’s cancellation….

  • TV Viewer

    The highs and lows of being on the most watched network (18 – 49 Demo and total viewers) means that most of their programs are renewed, while four good shows get cancelled. CBS had to cancel some programs or they would have nothing new to debut in September. I will miss CSI: NY, Golden Boy, Rules of Engagement, and Vegas; but, they were the most vunerable progams on the network and they had to go. At least their cancellations were expected and it’s not a total surprise that they were not renewed. I am sure most people expected them to be cancelled, especially when they were not renewed with the other shows last March.

    CBS fans, don’t give up on your shows. This is old news by now, but Unforgettable is coming back for the summer.

  • Mary

    Now we have to wait until tomorrow to see CBS’s schedule. Practically everything I watch on network TV is on CBS but I always have to wait until Wednesday to see the schedule.

  • Chuck

    Golden Boy was great. Big mistake CBS.

  • TV Addict

    If my memory is correct, The Mentalist only had two faces next to it when it was renewed. Of course, I’m not the chick from Unforgettable so I could be wrong, but I think that’s actually a miss.

  • Jermal

    @Chuck

    It wasn’t a mistake to cancel Golden Boy as it didn’t perform well enough to warrant renewal.

  • gerry

    no surprises here.

    long live the good wife!

  • Double d

    Vegas and Golden Boy were getting much better as they went on. I remember a show called Southland that was good then cancelled, then TNT grabbed it and made it great! I wish more cable outlets would take shows that would be great with a little more heat and edge. Both of these shows could make great cable regulars. If I remember correctly Seinfeld and Cheers were truly awful their first seasons, but someone gave them a nod for a second season and look how those two turned out.

  • Bill

    Yep again they have cancel the shows I like on this network darn shame….. as usual CBS almost always disappoints. 4(5) shows left Hawaii Five O,Good Wife, NCIS(both) and Person of Interest. I never stay for anything on the other side of these anymore.

  • Anthony Parello (AP076)

    @Double d

    -TNT got a deal that was probably impossible to pass up with Southland as 6 episodes had been filmed for the second season. In an unusual move NBC renewed the show for a second season but then cancelled it before it started. TNT got the rights to the first season as well as the 6 new episodes for what was likely bargain basement prices. Subsequently for season 3 massive cast cutbacks and production changes (which in my opinion made the show better) made the show affordable for TNT.

    -Seinfeld….let me pinch hit for Ultima here. Seinfeld was NOT poorly rated its first seasons. The ratings justified renewal when compared to other NBC shows. It is true that the shows grew from those ratings to become a ratings monster but it was not in the dire straights that Vegas and Golden Boy were.

    -Cheers, another one bandied about. Its like arguing that the Vietnam war should have been fought the exact same was The American Revolution was. Cheers was at a completely different point in the history of TV and entertainment. In the early 80s no internet, DVR, DVD, VCR’s rare, and no 100+ other channels to offer scores of other original scripted and reality fare.
    A network could afford to give a show a break and hope for the best. Not that a whole bunch of show were cancelled that year.
    Also my understanding is that NBC was in such a sad state at that point that renewing Cheers could not hurt then too much.

    Network to cable as well as network to network trades are incredibly rare. They probably happen <1% of the time and when they do happen syndication economics (and studio of origin) are most likely at play (Cougar Town, Law & Order:CI, Scrubs, Medium).

    Golden Boy deserves another season (In the U.K. was up for Best Mini-Series ) guess thats what the call TV Shows that are not Films,

    @Bill
    If a show is uncancelled like Unforgettable last year, does the Bear adjust his track record for the year or is he just like, “I’m hibernating, come back later!”?

  • JT

    I like Golden Boy, but we expect this will happen. I think a mistake was we know the future of the character, and at lest, in my case, that reduce my interest in the serie. But it is a great serie. I was not expecting they cancelles RUles of Engagement. I will miss that serie.

    @Feedback, Either that or CSI goes to Fridays and Mentalist stays where it is.

  • Maria

    I can’t believe you cancelled Golden Boy – it is a great show – please reconsider

  • CBSviewer

    @Feedback

    I don’t think CSI will move to Friday or Sunday because it is #1 10PM Drama on CBS (maybe on TV ?). Plus Two and a Half Men is too expensive to be wasted on Friday. It will move to Thursday at 9 (if CBS expand their Comedy hour) or it will move to Wednesday at 8.

  • James Huggins

    CBS really dropped the ball cancelling Vagas and Golden Boy. These were the best of the best on CBS. I can tell that this has nothing to do with ratings. Criminal Minds, Elementry, Survivor, How I Met Your Mother, and 2 Broke Girls….these are horrible shows!!!!! I hope another network picks up my favorite shows. CBS….. YOU SUCK !!!!!!!!! BIG TIME.
