Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012-  May 12, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Made In Jersey (F)* canceled 0.36
Vegas (some F) canceled 0.49
CSI:NY (F)* canceled 0.50
Blue Bloods (F) renewed 0.55
Golden Boy (one F) canceled 0.56
The Good Wife* renewed 0.62
The Mentalist* renewed 0.66
Partners* canceled 0.79
Hawaii Five-0 renewed 0.81
CSI  renewed 0.87
Elementary renewed 0.87
Rules of Engagement canceled 0.92
NCIS: Los Angeles  renewed 1.08
Criminal Minds  renewed 1.09
Mike & Molly renewed 1.10
Person Of Interest renewed 1.13
How I Met Your Mother renewed 1.26
2 Broke Girls renewed 1.26
NCIS  renewed 1.31
Two And A Half Men** renewed 1.47
The Big Bang Theory renewed 2.13

The cancellation bear went 20-0-1 on his CBS predictions for the 2012-13 season. (vs. 20-2 in the 2011-12 season)

The "tie" was because the bear had The Mentalist predicted as a "toss up" at the time it was renewed.

With that the cancellation bear bids the 2012-13 season adieu and begins his summer hibernation. The bear and his Renew/Cancel Index posts will return in September. Happy Summer!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Golden boy — Really good show that would have gained momentum

  • Brittney

I am CRUSHED about Rules of Engagement! :-( Whhhyyy? Brenda just went into labor and we never got to see Adam and Jens wedding:-(

  • The End

    @James Huggins
@CBS….. YOU SUCK !!!!!!!!! BIG TIME.

You’l be surprised to know that CBS does not renew shows based on your personal taste. It’s not the networks fault that you’re backing the wrong shows.

  • Diane Burns

Going to miss Golden Boy and CSI N.Y. I hope they wrap up Golden Boy and don’t leave us hanging. Bring it back for summer!

  • john furedi

why the hell should we care about the new shows if the old onse are being taken off air like csi ny, vegas, and golden boy who ever decided to remove those 3 shows is a moron after this i wander what would happen if people would stop watching cbs then cbs could go to hell

  • NavyRet

Just want to add my 2 cents and another plug for Vegas and Golden Boy. Two excellent shows; cancelled. Why are the good ones cancelled and crap like Survivor continued? I am so sick of “reality TV” that I could just puke. C’mon CBS, get it in one bag and quit cancelling the good shows. BRING BACK GOLDEN BOY AND VEGAS !!!!

  • The End

@Why are the good ones cancelled and crap like Survivor continued?

Because people who watch CBS, like these shows. You might be shocked to learn this, but if enough people watch a show, it’l be renewed ;)

  • Dhd

Golden boy is a program thst grows on you. As you become embroiled in the story it gets more and more interesting and entertaining, so rather than give it a chance to catch on….sure…just cancel it. I suggest a reality show, we need more of them rather than something that has a good story.

  • Anthony Parello (AP076)

Golden Boy will not be replaced by any sort of reality show. In fact CBS has the least “reality” of any of the 4 major networks. Golden Boy will be replaced by a more promising new one hour scripted drama.

  • bob

screw cbs, vegas was the best

  • CopiusLove

CBS canceled my favorite show last year which is CSI MIAMI. They really need to bring that show back. For the record The Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls, and Two and a Half Men is not a funny show. CSI: NY, should have been the show they canceled last season. I really have tried to look at, but I can’t get into NCIS: LOS ANGELES. I don’t care for the Good Wife either. Please don’t come out with another reality show.

  • Jermal

    @ Copius Love

Regardless of your opinions of the four comedies you have mentioned enough people found them funny enough for all four to be renewed. They don’t need to bring back CSI :Miami it lasted 10 seasons and 232 episodes with a decline in ratings in its last three seasons. If CBS decided to keep the show it will decline some more

  • bob

renew vegas and golden boy. i personally think the characters around vegas, ralph lamb and family was interesting and it kept my interest. i love the show and as far as golden boy is concerned it kept my interest and i found it quite good. the plots were good, the acting was excellent and it made television fun to watch. do you know why people are loving cable it is because the network suits at cbs are screwing up by cancelling the wrong shows. renew the shows jerk weed.

  • Geoff

Count me as a fan of Golden Boy and last night’s show was outstanding with the flashbacks to 9/11. Chi McBride’s character watching the 2nd plane fly just ABOVE his head and then hit the 2nd tower from where he was standing was eerie. Great writers on this show and it will be missed….

  • Vicki

You must reconsider your cancelling of Golden Boy! Last night show (5-14) was the very best one.I get tears in my eyes when I think of how powerful it was. My family got hooked the very first show. I am a little confused that you advertised this show in the beginning to attract viewers and we watch with loyalty even through all the 50+ commercials of stuff we don’t need and you punish us with cancellations. Not sure you are making the right decision for your CBS viewers. I will promise you I will not be sucked in with all your million dollar hype for any new shows in the future. Golden Boy has great actors, believable subjects and storylines that do not insult my intelligence. I am so sorry I got scammed again by this network.

  • lesley wright

Once again CBS have cancelled the wrong CSI show, NY was the best show of the all of the CSI’s, no wonder NCIS’s viewing figures are on the increase they have no competition. The cancellation of NY is devastating news for all concerned.

  • bluegrassbetty

So sad about Golden Boy, wish it had been on another network so it would have had a chance. Why does Blue Bloods keep getting renewed, ratings are not that good.

  • Jermal

Blue Bloods airs on Fridays which on that day shows tend to have low ratings across all networks to begin with. Despite the show being below network average it is a top rated Friday show and closing in on syndication needing 21 episodes to get to 88.

  • Shirley Baer

I cant believe Golden Boy and Vegas were cancelled. They may have started off weak but got better and better…. I’d much rather see these shows than some of the gory bloody criminal minds shows, they are getting worse and worse and have been on long enough. This literally makes me want to quit watching cbs… and how about how i met your mother? hasnt it been going on long enough?

  • Shirley Baer

i agree about the reality shows… why do they keep getting renewed… anyone can tell they aren’t really real… they cant possibly expect people to believe all that crap. vegas was based on a real person… golden boy is a great show…. csi miami was the best of all the csi shows… i cant believe cbs… who is running that station anyway…. i hate reality shows… that’s all the channels are going to, reality shows and dancing, singing, cooking, any kind of competition… dont we have enough of those on all the channels… do we have to keep watching all the rich people in their daily lives…. bring back csi miami, golden boy, vegas. drop dead diva got cancelled on lifetime but i see it is coming back. southland got cancelled on tnt but it came back and lasted another four years…. lets get together adn get out shows back on this fall… let’s start a petition… anybody know how to do it… tell me and i’ll start one for those three shows.
