Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012-  May 12, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Made In Jersey (F)* canceled 0.36
Vegas (some F) canceled 0.49
CSI:NY (F)* canceled 0.50
Blue Bloods (F) renewed 0.55
Golden Boy (one F) canceled 0.56
The Good Wife* renewed 0.62
The Mentalist* renewed 0.66
Partners* canceled 0.79
Hawaii Five-0 renewed 0.81
CSI  renewed 0.87
Elementary renewed 0.87
Rules of Engagement canceled 0.92
NCIS: Los Angeles  renewed 1.08
Criminal Minds  renewed 1.09
Mike & Molly renewed 1.10
Person Of Interest renewed 1.13
How I Met Your Mother renewed 1.26
2 Broke Girls renewed 1.26
NCIS  renewed 1.31
Two And A Half Men** renewed 1.47
The Big Bang Theory renewed 2.13

The cancellation bear went 20-0-1 on his CBS predictions for the 2012-13 season. (vs. 20-2 in the 2011-12 season)

The "tie" was because the bear had The Mentalist predicted as a "toss up" at the time it was renewed.

With that the cancellation bear bids the 2012-13 season adieu and begins his summer hibernation. The bear and his Renew/Cancel Index posts will return in September. Happy Summer!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Shirley Baer

A petition has had a long history of not working. Unless you are going to help raise some money to buy the rights off of whoever owns the rights to the show you won’t win this one. Also NONE of the canceled shows are getting replaced by reality shows those shows are replaced by new SCRIPTED shows. The reality shows that have been picked up are for mid season and the summer. Oh and How I Met Your Mother was renewed for its FINAL season.

CBS U screwed up/ Made my wife very upset….Cancelling Vegas & Golden Boy YOU R NUTS!

  • CBS lover

I don’t know how CBS decides which shows to keep and which shows to cancel, but CSI:NY was one of my favorite shows, and I am VERY disappointed and frustrated that they canceled it without even a series finale! Which that seems to be the norm anymore, to give no warning! I am on the brink of just getting rid of my TV service, because I can’t count on my shows continuing every year, and I hate to start watching a new show because they tend to cancel them after just a few episodes. This is just poor business, as far as I am concerned! I just have to vent! Gggrrrr!!!

@Bill or @Anybody who can answer

I’ve always wondered if networks get paid according to their scripted average, or according to the actual ratings their shows get? For instance, does a 1.0 on the CW make as much money as a 1.0 on CBS or does it make the equivalent of a 2.4 on CBS?

  • Holly

I don’t know how CBS decides which shows to keep and which shows to cancel,

Money. Shows that make more money get renewed, shows that make less money get canceled.

CSI:NY was one of my favorite shows, and I am VERY disappointed and frustrated that they canceled it without even a series finale

The PTB on CSI: NY knew that cancellation was a very real possibility and wrote a finale they thought would work as a series finale in the event it wasn’t renewed. If you didn’t like the ending, your issue is with the writers, not CBS.

Golden Boy was a phenomenal show–and very surprised to see it canceled.

I hope people make as big of a fuss over the cancellation as they did when Jericho was canceled several years ago (which was ANOTHER great show gone before its time).

  • Rosanne

Loved Golden Boy! Wish network would reconsider. So few good shows come about – a true disappointment to lose such a great story with such really good actors.

  • The End

@and very surprised to see it canceled.

Are you new here? Or do you just not understand ratings? Because I’m very surprised to see someone very surprised that a show that rated dreadfully on CBS was cancelled lol.

  • Nancy b

Cannot believe they cancelled golden boy. And left csi on the show has no original cast and past it’s prime. Csi ny was a way better show where is CBS ‘s head probably up its (—)

  • victoria

CBS was very tame this year with none of the unpredicatablity of the past couple of Season and they made most of their announcements early.

Person Of Interest seems to be the big loser here going to the Tuesday night 10.00p.m. death slot.

Without A Trace was still top 20 in overall viewing figures plus just below 1 in the renew/cancel index when it was dropped from this slot.

Also a major surprise NCIS:Red didn’t make it.

Surely The Good Wife and The Mentalist must be on their last seasons? I would hope if this is so CBS make this known early so that the writers can give the viewers a proper finale but then when did CBS ever consider their viewers?

  • Dan

I really grew to like GOLDEN BOY… the characters were well defined, and the interplay between the new detective and his more experienced partner was solid. The hints at the opening & end each week (7yrs later vs. now) added to my interest. The only implausible part was … HOW in seven years did Walt appear to AGE 20 YEARS ?? A little overdone, perhaps ? Nevertheless, will miss this one…

  • Marilyn

I am very sorry to see the CSI NY has been cancelled; it was a very good program.

  • Rosie

I never leave comments, but after watching the season finale of Golden Boy, I’m so angry with CBS that I decided I needed to say something. I couldn’t tell you the last time I watched a show on CBS, but I LOVED Golden Boy. The show got better and better, I loved the characters….HUGE MISTAKE!!! I HATE CBS now! Let’s hope another network, a more wise network, picks it up so I can continue enjoying te show!

  • Marc

Golden Boy is a good show. Early on in the season the show was a little slow, but now the story has all its pieces together.

  • The End

@Let’s hope another network, a more wise network, picks it up so I can continue enjoying te show!

More chance of Jesus christ himself appearing at your front door than another a network picking up this show. Sorry.

  • Felice Caswell

We are so disappointed that you cancelled Golden Boy & Vegas. Golden Boy was very well written and acted. We especially liked the relationship between the older & younger detectives. We are really hoping that CBS will bring it back. Some of the shows they are keeping are so average and not at all intellectually interesting. As for Criminal Minds, I think Jeanne Triplehorn is a very good actress, but there is not enough for her to do. I hope CBS is not going to let her go. You may recall that she was in the movies “The Firm” with Tom Cruise and “Water World” where she was constantly wet and really suffered through it. She was most recently on cable in “Big Love” for several years. She is also very pretty.

  • Bunny

I agree with most of the new programing.Something for everyone.I will miss CSI NY.

  • JT

Ugh, 2 Broke Girls was renewed. Jennifer Coolidge is horrible and annoying as hell with that accent on that show.

I do look forward to Patrick Warburton’s next thing since Rules was canceled. :(

  • Steve

Rules of Engagement series finale was completely hilarious. I think CBS made a bad choice cancelling it. Let’s hope their new fall comedies aren’t like Partners was this past season…………………….

  • Kylee

Wow. Rules of Engagement was hilarious… Can’t breve they cancelled that! So stupid while all these other lame shows get renewed!
