The Cancellation Bear went 20-0-1 on his CBS predictions for the 2012-13 season. (vs. 20-2 in the 2011-12 season)

The "tie" was because the bear had The Mentalist predicted as a "toss up" at the time it was renewed.

With that the cancellation bear bids the 2012-13 season adieu and begins his summer hibernation. The bear and his Renew/Cancel Index posts will return in September. Happy Summer!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    I enjoyed Golden Boy.

  • Wendy

I don’t know why you cancelled CSI NY it was one the best show I hate those makeup shoes like Grimm and those weird shows once upon a time I miss seeing Mac it was one of the nest shows please bring it back

  • David

The ONE decent show, Vegas, on television and CBS cancels it and puts CRAP in it’s place! Typical of CBS though!! I WILL NOT be watching next season! BRING BACK VEGAS!!

  • Michael A

Really enjoyed Vegas & Golden Boy. Quality shows, wonder if they would have been renewed if they were aired on ABC, FOX or NBC with the numbers they had…

  • Anthony

CBS made a HUGE mistake cancelling Golden Boy and Vegas. They moved Vegas to Friday’s and it STILL got good numbers. Both shows were gaining traction and if they were on The CW or TNT they would be coming back for Season 2. CBS is ruthless like FOX was and still is with their programming. The problem and A LOT of people on hear have said it is “Reality TV Shows” Survivor, The Amazing Race, Undercover Boss. Survivor is ooooold! and the other shows suck balls. I like some Reality TV shows, but they’re are way too many of them on TV these days and it’s making it increasingly more difficult for new shows to gain the necassary traction to get audiences interested. Polling numbers are another serios issue, but I won’t go into the obvious

  • Anthony

Networks put out 6-7 new programs EVERY fall knowing that more than half of them will fail halfway thru the season and at least 2 shows will be pulled after their pilot. That leaves maybe 2 shows to get full season orders and the strong likelyhood that 1 or both of the shows that got a full Season to not return for a Season 2 or 3. There is WAY too much turnover today in TV and frustrastes the crap out of me to take time to watch a show, get invested, only to hear it’s being cancelled. Now I completely understand that there are some crap new shows that deserve cancellations, but the polling system needs a complete overall and addition of people over the age of 55. Don’t these idiots that run TV networks know that people 55 and older watch TV too? Especially retired folks who watch more TV than most people age 18-55. Something needs to change because I’m sick and tired of watching new shows each fall and not knowing if they will be cancelled!

  • Shauna

I hope they renew csi: miami.

  • Josh

Never watched Golden boy, never even knew it existed. Guess that explains why it was cancelled. But than again, I stopped watching shows from the start and just waited to see which ones stayed around for a while.

I didnt start watching the good wife till season 3 (I went and watched the previous 2 seasons at that point). The Big bang theory, 2 and half men are the only shows i watched from the start. CSI i stopped watching it 3,4 years ago when Grisham left, so it’s up next on the chopping block in my opinion next year. I am suprised Criminal minds has made it this long, but than again I stopped watching it 2 years ago as well.

  • Elpidio mendoza

Vegas is one of the best shows on tv somethin really worth watching I am so mad they cacelled I stopped watching cbs they cancelled golden boy to so there is nothing else worth my time on cbs

  • P.J.

A lil bumbed bout golden boy n Vegas…I really enjoyed those shows. Cancel two idiots n half a moron! That show was 1% away from sucking with the sheen!

  • John Baker

CBS is crazy for canceling Golden Boy. This is one show we looked forward to watching. Who makes the dumb decisions?????

  • Carolyn

Cancelling Vegas was a BIG turn OFF for me! It had everything!!! Loved it! It was my favorite new show!!! Bunch of dummies! Don’t they learn anything at CBS? WTH? (and bringing back Two Men and a Lady?) Dispels disbelief!

  • Nicole

I am so glad that Blue Bloods was renewed! It’s an amazing show and there’s still so much that can be done with it. The dynamic of the show is fantastic, as is the chemistry between the characters. Tom Selleck’s acting is no surprise, but then there’s Donnie Wahlberg, Will Estes, Bridget Moynahan, Len Cariou, Sami Gayle. I hadn’t really heard of those actors before but they are fantastic fantastic and they work together so well, especially with the believable family dynamic dynamic at the heart of the show. This series has become one of my absolute favorites.

I wish CBS would try running it on a better day of the week and doing more publicity for it like they do for a lot of the other shows. I’ve no doubt it could do so much better than it does if they just backed it like they do some of their other programs.

  • Mike Tansey

I can’t tell you how disappointed I am at learning today that Golden Boy is cancelled! I am afraid to tell my wife. Our favorite show is Blue Bloods, and every episode of Golden Boy tugs at our idea of what our favorite show is. Still love Blue Bloods, but the writing and characters of Golden Boy kept us on the edge every week. Please reconsider, Oh Powers that Be! Glad you left Person of Interest alone. Another one we won’t miss! If you need extra time slots, get rid of 2 Broke Girls and the never-ending How I Met Your Mother.

  • keith spurrell

Me and my wife loved the golden boy and rules of engagement. It brought us together to watch shows that made us laugh and thrill us about life on the streets of New York. We think it is a big mistake to cancel these shows without a 2nd season of golden boy and one of the funniest shows on tv. Please think it over and bring them back. We are from St. john’s, Newfoundland,Canada and we watch 90% of our shows on CBS. Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday and Sunday. That’s a lot of CBS watching. Please consider.

  • Judy Crotts

Here we go again with cbs doing exactly what most viewers did not want to happen. It is almost like they want to keep the crumy shows and delete the ones that are good and have great actors and storyline.Golden Boy was so good that we tvoed it even if we were home to watch it.Oh man was Vegas a great program! Why could cbs not see that people like new types of programs? We love shows with different types of storylines, and Vegas and Golden Boy sure do meet the qualifications for this. We have enough reality shows and shows that have dumb meaning (usually no meaning). My husband and I usually watch cbs but now that will change. We will watch the shows we like on cbs but for the most part we will watch other networks.Wake up cbs! You are just one of many networks. My tv gets them all and I and a lot of my friends and family are doing the same! CBS get smart and listen. Everyone can be replaced!

  • Bunny

    More science Fiction shows please.

  • michel

Csi NY nor Csi miami wil be renewed bij cbs ever again some actors are on other shows already.

Csi Maimi was by far way the most expansive one of the the three.

Csi ny was a solid show but when melina left they alreay got the show its death blow not saying sela ward isnt good but melina was just better.

same for CSI when warrick and grissom left the show it just wasnt good enough anymore ted danson is a funy man but just nog the right one to replase william peterson.
this was death blow 1 for CSI second was the one we al silently knew was comming the departure of cathrine was considerd to be the killing blow to CSI but it didnt kill the raitings.

finlay is awfull i dont think csi will pull an other season after this.

just for the fact that CBS didnt order a full season of 24 eppisodes but 22 so they are dooing the same thing als they dit with miami and ny first ordering less eppisodes and when the rewals for next tv season 14-15 its gets killed of.

and cbs will do it that way.

maybe if some other calenetwork buys of all the rights to the three serries they al get renewed and we can whats the all again

  • Moonlight Special

Vegas – I really wanted to like Vegas, since I love Blue Bloods and NCIS, both of which bring back vintage hunks.

At first Vegas had some hope to be a good show, but it was too jarring to watch the lack of historical research, especially in the costuming. How hard can it be to find footage of how people dressed in mid-20th Century Vegas? The women’s hair was hard to take in particular, although I am sure there are plenty of hairdressers around who remember how to use hairspray and a rat-tail comb.

But there were problems with dialogue, pacing and clarity.

Too bad, because I really wanted to like it.

  • The Fanatic

Unfortunately, we all knew this day would come for CSI:NY. It comes from being moved to a bad time spot much like when they exiled CSI:MIAMI to Sunday nights at 10pm.

Sunday 10pm??? That’s pretty much death for most shows…

somehow for now Mentalist is surviving on that dead man walking trail…
    Love Patrick Jane and crew…

Hostages? Thats the best you can do. In a spot once occupied the sexy and classy spot CSI:MIAMI. Both New York and Miami take a hit of shows based in their cities. Unbelievable… who would have thought their progenitor CSI would survive major cast changes. I guess it’s so unpredictable…
hopefully any drama replacements will be worthy of our viewing time and support.
we welcome back the NCIS franchise as well as the classic CSI and the junior year for Person of Interest and fif th or sixth year senior of
    Mentalist.

Work harder or other networks will surely surpass you as number one in the rankings…

good luck and we await your lineup.
