Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- May 12, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index

American Dad  renewed 1.13
New Girl renewed 1.14
Bones*  renewed 1.14
The Simpsons  renewed 1.20
The Following* renewed 1.39
Family Guy  renewed 1.41

The cancellation bear went 14-0 on his Fox predictions for the 2012-13 season. (vs. 18-0-1 in the 2011-12 season)

It was the second year in a row the bear hadn't missed a prediction for a Fox show.

With that the cancellation bear bids the 2012-13 season adieu and begins his summer hibernation. The bear and his Renew/Cancel Index posts will return in September. Happy Summer!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Here’s to the Bear having a full stomach! See you guys this Fall!

  • Cleveland

How is a .80 and .81 getting renewed mean you have a perfect record? Doesn’t anything below a 1 mean canceled?

  • Jonay

They said the remaining episodes of Ben & Kate would air at some point was that a lie?

  • Rebecca

I hope they still air – I remember seeing summer late-night Saturday plans for airing reruns of it. I’m still hoping for the final three episodes (if they were all filmed) to at least air on hulu. Can’t find them anywhere else.

  • brutony

RRROOOAAARRRRRRRR!!! I had a great year-cant get much better than batting 1.000! And for now, I will be hibernating, as apparently Im in Australia and we hibernate for the summer months! As soon as I watch the Office Series Finale, that is-and I NEVER caught up to that show, so it gets my utmost respect! See y’all in Sept!

  • daniel

Was The Cleveland Show canceled officially?

  • JacobYates

The numbers on the side of the TV shows are the not the ratings averages. If Raising Hope was pulling .80 on the index, that means that its ratings averaged 80% of the FOX scripted average. That does not mean it pulled a .8 in the ratings.

  • JacobYates

When FOX said they weren’t cancelling it, just no more episodes would be produced they pretty much cancelled it.

  • Jermal

You are over thinking it as they have predicted that raising hope and the mindy project to be renewed and they have been renewed. Those shows were at or above the network average in viewership.

  • gerry

not anything new here. i think i’m going to try to catch mindy over the summer.

  • Ultima

    Doesn’t anything below a 1 mean canceled?

No. An index of 1 means the show is doing the same as the network’s scripted average and typically indicates that renewal is certain. However, plenty of shows with below average ratigns are renewed every season.

  • Patrick Ausgewahlt

Don’t think Family Guy has ever been FOX’s top rated scripted show

  • D.S.K.

It is sad Touch has been cancelled , it hit a groove this year and gaps in coverage and change in Tuesday to Friday did not help. I am astonished what Fox did keep or renew . Maybe Martin Bohm, Jake and Amelia and the web reporter for a new “24”
    Cleveland Ohio

  • Chris

Was The Cleveland Show canceled officially?

No the show is basically receiving a silent cancellation so that it won’t piss off Seth MacFarlane. FOX did the same thing with Futurama back in 2003 when they stated that the show is not cancelled, but that they will not be ordering any new episodes.

  • danielcw

but back then, Fox gave Futurama one extra final episode

  • The End

@so that it won’t piss off Seth MacFarlane.

I seriously doubt he will even care. It’l be one low rated project of his gone, and a chance for him to work on something new. He’s a creator, he’l have other things in the pipeline that he’l desperately want to work on, and The Cleveland show being cancelled gives him that chance.

  • pete5125

Yeah, Cleveland got 88 episodes, will be syndicated on brodcast and cable for the forseeable future, Fox and Seth will be very rich for this decision…Dilbert, The Critic and The PJ’s didn’t get that many episodes and they still pop up on cable channles in re-runs so I’m sure he will be doing ok

  • bob

im glad touch was cancelled because noe we got 24 back

  • aj

So does this mean Cleaveland’s coming back to Family Guy?

  • Hello

Would be surprised if Cleveland didn’t move back to Quahog at some point next season.
