In the very last scene of last night’s eighth season finale of How I Met Your Mother, viewers finally got to meet the titular “Mother” as she purchases her train ticket to Farhampton, where she will eventually meet Ted.  Broadway star Cristin Milioti (“Once”) plays “The Mother.”

Shot on March 27 at the Twentieth Century Fox lot in Los Angeles, Milioti’s casting and filming of her scene was kept in strict secrecy in order to preserve the surprise for the audience.

“It was a pretty big umbrella to fill, casting the title role in a series that's been on the air for eight years,” says Carter Bays, Executive Producer and Co-Creator of How I Met Your Mother.  “And yet Cristin Milioti is, against all odds, exactly what we were looking for. She made us laugh on “30 Rock,” she made us swoon in “Once,” and her ukulele skills are no joke. We're thrilled to welcome her to the How I Met Your Mother family, and look forward to getting to know her – and the character she plays – much better in the coming final season.  And to all the fans, on behalf of all of us writers, cast and crew: Thank you for sticking with us on this wild journey. Our ninth season will tell the epic story of the longest wedding weekend ever. We hope you like it. Next stop, Farhampton...”

Cristin Milioti just concluded her star turn as “Girl” in the Broadway smash hit musical “Once,” for which she received a Grammy Award as well as a Tony Award nomination for Lead Actress. Milioti will soon be seen playing opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in the upcoming Martin Scorsese feature film, “The Wolf of Wall Street,” due out later this year.  Her previous television credits include “30 Rock,” “The Sopranos,” “The Good Wife” and “Nurse Jackie.”

How I Met Your Mother returns this fall to CBS for its ninth and final season.  How I Met Your Mother is produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television.  Carter Bays, Craig Thomas, Pamela Fryman, Chris Harris, Stephen Lloyd, Chuck Tatham and Kourtney Kang are Executive Producers.

    I wish they would have had a very famous actress. SHe is just OKAY looking. (I wish he would have ended up with Robin)

  • davor

    Wait so the whole season is going to be about the weekend of the wedding???

  • joel

    Fun choice. There’s no better experience/qualifications in recent years for a romantic role than being one of the leads in Once. With her and NPH’s chops there could even be some musical numbers.

  • JohnQ

    LOL, maybe “24″ style with a special appareance by K. Sutherland

  • SJ

    I had just re-watched parts of her 30 Rock episode like two days ago so I recognized her instantly. :) I like her, I think she’ll be a great fit.

    But is season 9 really going to be an hour-by-hour story of the Barney & Robin wedding? Will we really not get to see Ted interact with her at all until the final scene?! That feels like a cheat after all these years.

  • chase

    He should be with Robin. Barney would never be happy married.

  • poddsocks

    her teeth & gums are horrible when she smiles.

  • Jeff (Canada)

    @SJ

    The most likely scenario is that we, the audience, will get to see her and learn all about her WAY before she meets Ted. That way, we’ll actually be rooting for them to be together, instead of saying “well she’s basically his silver medal since he can’t be with Robin”. So I fully expect them to flush out her character before she meets Ted on the train station platform.

  • Ted Craig

    It didn’t matter who the mother was, it was going to be a letdown.

  • Rebecca

    I don’t remember her on 30R. I was let down last night because I thought Barney and Robin’s wedding would at least start (or the wedding DAY anyway) and it didn’t. Dang cliffhanger. But I’ll watch all of next season, they got me.

  • Rebecca

    I thought Ted is supposed to meet her at B&R’s wedding?

  • Rebecca

    For a little while I was hoping it would be Penny from HE, lol, since that actress was in last night’s episode (albeit with another guy).

  • Confusion

    Wow at the comments calling her ugly! I mean the main cast has a ginger, so… does it matter as long as she’s funny?

  • SJ

    @Jeff (Canada)

    But will we get to see them on screen together? Will we see Ted wooing her, going on dates, getting married, her interacting with the gang, maybe even getting pregnant… I don’t think so.

    Also, I’m afraid the show is going to pull a Will & Grace on us, in that we’ll likely see all the characters go their separate ways in the series finale and not staying as close as they were during the show’s run. That would be a bummer, but it’s been hinted at many times before. I mean, Ted and Robin alone should probably take some time apart now that they’ve both got their significant others.

  • forg

    I like that they casted a relatively unknown (to TV) for the role, I think it’s exciting and she’s a Tony nominated actress so she has the chops and I hope she has chemstry with Josh Radnor

  • gigi

    Well should we expect it to boost the shows next season premiere by much?

  • Jeff (Canada)

    @SJ

    Hmm seeing them together, that’s a tough one, especially if the whole season is just taking place over the course of 56 hours. They MIGHT do flashbacks/forwards to their time together, in smal glimpses, that’s probably your best bet.

    And I don’t think the gang is going to split up. They’ve shown flashforwards several times now of the gang hanging out WITH their babies (I specifically recall the guys hanging out together in Marshall and Lily’s apartment with Ted’s baby on his lap). Sure, they won’t be hanging out as much as they used to be, but that’s normal, since work/marriage/kids usually get in the way of hanging out with friends.

    Oddly enough though, I don’t think we’ve seen a flashforward of Ted and Robin hanging out together, so yeah I think they may just avoid each other after she gets married, which kinda sucks for the friendship.

  • Patrick Ausgewahlt

    I think since it is the final season, Ted will meet her in the premier (probably a two parter). They will fall in love and next may the finale will be them getting married.

  • Bitter Ringer Fan

    i’m not so sure about this 56-hour in 1 season. I thought it would be a regular year so we get to see them fall in love. I think they will just meet after the wedding like in the season 8 premiere and that would happen during the last scenes. Too bad since i wanted to see her interact with the gang. Still it’s gonna be an epic final season. I’m so glad i didn’t miss last night’s episode because right after it aired in the west coast, the official FB page revealed her picture and a lot of people got pissed! The mother of spoilers!

    my guess is half the season will be following both up to the ‘meet’ and the rest of the season will be the courtship.
