Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- May 12, 2013):

The cancellation bear went 15-2 on his NBC predictions for the 2012-13 season. (vs. 20-0 in the 2011-12 season)

His Hannibal cancellation prediction is still hanging in the balance as NBC makes up its mind.

The bear's two NBC misses were exactly where he feared they'd be, in the marginal sitcoms. He figured that one or two  of CommunityWhitney and Go On would be renewed, but predicted them all marginally towards renewal. In the end, only Community survived (along, of course, with Parks & Recreation) among NBC sitcoms.

With that the cancellation bear bids the 2012-13 season adieu and begins his summer hibernation. The bear and his Renew/Cancel Index posts will return in September. Happy Summer!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

It’s hilarious that NBC premiered all those new sitcoms last season and still ended up renewing Parks and Community.

Parks and Recreation has a strong Community

    Go Hannibal!!

I really thought they’d renew Whitney and GWK.

  • Wright

    Renew Hannibal!!!

  • Jimmy

Up All Night would have lasted (and Christina Applegate would have stayed)if NBC didn’t decide to take it off the air to ‘retool’ it. So frustrating.

  • Rebecca

The two best comedies were all that survived the comedy bloodbath. (I did so want GO to come back, and 1600 Penn and GWK but mostly GO.)

  • Alexis N

Spring cleaning for NBC! They cancelled 11 shows (including Rock Center) while two shows ended. Almost looks to be a clean slate for NBC this coming fall.

  • Bev

Are they waiting to see how the Gillian Anderson episodes do before making a call on Hannibal?

  • Jonay

Isn’t like NBC already canceled Hannibal because they already scheduled Parenthood next fall there?

  • Mary

Not really. They could always put Hannibal on another day or save ir for Summer 2014 (which is what they should do)

  • Oliver

Doubt it. It’s unlikely it would have retained its fall ratings into spring.

  • Reache

    Good Job Bear :)

  • Ultima

    Hannibal, the midnight snack! ;)

  • Reache

    Hannibal, the midnight snack!

    Or ‘désert de minuit’ ;)

Up All Night’s ratings had plummeted by the end of Season 1 and showed no signs of recovery. It would most likely have been cancelled whether it was re-tooled or not.

It had a hugely talented cast and I hope Christina Applegate and Maya Rudolph find another comedy worthy of their talents.

did nbc renew apprentice or was that trump talking out of his other mouth?.

  • StevenD

Anyone have any ideas what will go on Tuesday 8-10 in January? I’d imagine the Sing Off is on Monday

Maybe the Apprentice, or double pump a drama like The Night Shift

  • Robert Ford

I love Community, (my third favorite show after Parks and Rec and Modern Family) but I hadn’t realized it was still basically even with Whitney even with the final few episodes. Now I’m sure that it was only renewed because of Sony’s bargaining power, which makes me feel kind of sad.

And this crop of new comedies all did pretty abysmally. Unless MJF proves to be as weak a lead as Matthew Perry, NBC will be able to keep at least one new sitcom, which will let them do the “renew two and trash the rest” thing again if need be. I can’t imagine Community making six seasons at this point (and I’m not sure that I want it to with Pierce gone).

Here’s hoping NBC at least extends the order to 16 episodes and gives it a proper send off.

  • TV Addict

#SIXSEASONSANDAMOVIE!!!! It’s funny to see how low Community is on the list, but I love it. It did the impossible and was renewed even though SO many freaking comedies had a shot. So now, Community will go into next season as probably the lowest rated show on the Big 4 and somehow still get renewed for a final season. Everyone loves an underdog! C’MON COMMUNITY, DON’T LET ME DOWN NOW!!! JUST ONE MORE RENEWAL TO GO!!!!!!
