Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- May 12, 2013):

The cancellation bear went 15-2 on his NBC predictions for the 2012-13 season. (vs. 20-0 in the 2011-12 season)

His Hannibal cancellation prediction is still hanging in the balance as NBC makes up its mind.

The bear's two NBC misses were exactly where he feared they'd be, in the marginal sitcoms. He figured that one or two  of CommunityWhitney and Go On would be renewed, but predicted them all marginally towards renewal. In the end, only Community survived (along, of course, with Parks & Recreation) among NBC sitcoms.

With that the cancellation bear bids the 2012-13 season adieu and begins his summer hibernation. The bear and his Renew/Cancel Index posts will return in September. Happy Summer!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

The channel that shows Hannibal in UK is very small with small audience. Its not a big player in the TV landscape.

  • The End

@…Like that worked well for 666 Park Ave.

Which was funded by Warner Bros, and another American company, so not really internationally funded there. Still, the only network it would of survived on with those numbers is The CW ;)

  • The End

Anyway, I would be genuinely shocked if Hannibal is renewed. Personally I see this as the last cancellation of the season. Short of the show being given away for free, I don’t see how it could possibly, in any scenario survive on the network.

Sad to see Go On gone. Wish they’d hurry up with the call on Hannibal. I really like the show. It has tons of call backs to the other Hannibal works (especially Silence of the Lambs) and is surprisingly gory for network, although they get away with the ‘CSI’ type gore mostly. Still, if it does have to leave, hopefully a cable channel will pick it up, because it’s perfect for there anyway.

If the peacock is struggling it has itself to blame. Talk about some innovative shows; 666 park ave, smash, up all night, new normal. Just plain ridiculous really. Nothing else like any of these on TV right now. I mean what’s next? Will NBC turn into the next “bravo” with all reality all the time? If this is the path they are on then just kiss my viewing time goodbye.

  • Alice

Are you sure? I’m in the UK and the channel Hannibal is on is the same channel for all hugely popular American TV series like grays anatomy, house, elementary, mad men….. For American TV it’s certainly the biggest player and often has exclusivity on American shows

  • Jenn

Smash and 1600 Penn are two of the best shows on this year! Are you kidding Grimm got renewed!! Don’t people and any class?? I don’t know who at NBC is using to rate these shows but obviously not the real peoe of this country!! Smash and 1600 Penn should stay!!!

  • Joseph

Hannibal is an incredible show, hopefully the NBC Execs will take a chance on it. Especially since they they created this mess in the first place.

I am convinced that their damaged reputation as a network, and scheduling miscues, are eviscerating the ratings for quality shows. Both Hannibal this year, and Awake last year, come to mind.

If waiting till late March/early April is their idea of showcasing their best dramas, then they are just asking for more failure. If Hannibal was on another network that knew how/when to premier it, then it might have actually garnered decent ratings.

Come back a few weeks later, people are still in crocodile tears over Deception? Give me a break. It was cribbing directly from Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Not Revenge, not Scandal. My God this show’s fans are dense). Vivian would have been found alive and the main family along with Joanna would have killed each other en masse before the seasons were through.

  • Pam

Smash was the only reason that I had started to watch NBC again!! I haven’t watched any network TV in Years!!
Now that “Smash” is cancelled I will return to my usual viewing habits!! I would hope that some more intelligent network on the air would be smart enough to pick up where NBC left off!! If they do , they will have me as a viewer!!
    Shame on you NBC!!!

  • rgxx

Sooo…The Summer Olympics did nothing for GO ON.

  • brett

I think that Community has a cult following and NBC realizes that and if it can get one more season out of it they will be in a better position to sell it into syndication.

  • Steve

I see NBC’s newest comedy Save Me, garnered a .07 in the 18-49 demo.
I guess cancceled shows like Go On and The New Normal look pretty good right now.

  • Patrick G

I will miss SMASH a lot. It was a fun show, despite its problems. Now all I have left to watch on NBC is REVOLUTION, and that will be in the same position as SMASH next year once it is moved away from THE VOICE. How ruffled the Peacock’s feathers have become !! :(

  • Amanda

Damn and I LOVED Smash!!! Makes sense to cancel cuz what show would they dream up but it was soo good :(

  • Craig GUtkes

  • This guy.

Also I’m sad to see Smash go, at least they had a good series finale compared to abrupt cuts that befall many cancelled TV series.

Hope NBC has better grossing shows next season, because something is going wrong if more than half your shows are being canned.

  • Niki

So sad that Smash got the boot. I loved that show. …currently watching Hannibal so I hope that makes it!!!

  • Bailey

Hannibal as of May 30 has been renewed by NBC.

  • Bunny

I only watch Revenge and Chicago Fire on this network. More Science Fiction please.
