This TV season is all but over now, but next season will be here before you know it.  Here's a look at how each night stacks up based on the fall schedules announced this week.

Grids for all the nights are at the bottom of this post. In the past we've broken them up into separate posts for each day of the week. As we get closer to the fall season, we'' probably do just that. But it's all-in-one post for now.

Even More New Shows Than Last Year

Last year there were 20 new shows debuting in the early fall -- that count excludes "Fox Sports Saturday" and also excludes "Malibu Country" which didn't debut until later in the fall. This year there are more than 25% more new shows for a total of 26 -- that count excludes "Almost Human" and "Enlisted" which won't debut until later in the fall.

What Catches Ratings Watchers Eyes?

There will be no shortage of things to capture a ratings watcher's attention . How will CBS's expanded Thursday comedy block and new Monday comedies fare? How well will The Voice age? What happens to Person of Interest on a new night and later time with a smaller lead in? Revolution at 8pm? How bad is it going to be for Beauty and the Beast on a new day with Hart of Dixie as its lead-in?

But at least at the start of the season I can't imagine anything will capture more attention, even with ratings watchers, than the launch of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD.  Maybe I just lack imagination.  Those watching the NBA Finals on ABC in June can get back to me after they've seen the Agents of SHIELD promo for the 10,000th time.

  • I like this show

GREAT JOB ABC…..Put the AOS against NCIS….NO WAY you cancel it for “shockingly” under performing against the #1 show on network TV. Sending it out to die just like you did Last Resort. Your network deserves to be surpassed by NBC.

Well no matter how good/bad the ratings are, Agents of SHIELD will be nowhere near The Shield (2002-2008) in quality.

  • Terry

Shield and NCIS targets different audience: the former is more male-oriented, and the latter targeting young females. I doubt these shows will hurt each other much in terms of viewers. I predict Shield will open big, but will lose a lot of momentum over the weeks, and will end up tying NCIS for first.

The battle for viewers on Mondays at 10 will be more contentious. Blacklist will lead the pack because of the lead-in support from The Voice, but will do much better than Revolution has done this season. Blacklist will hurt CBS’ Hostages more than Castle. Castle will continue to be stable at #2.

TBBT will continue to dominate at 8pm on Thursdays, but OUAT: Wonderland is an interesting counterprogramming. After seeing the previews for it, it looks to have the potential to survive in that deathslot. The CBS comedy block will crush the NBC comedy block – CBS has the #1 and #2 comedies bookending its comedy block. Glee will continue to fade out of existance and Grey’s Anatomy will still be the #1 scripted show at 9pm.

Chicago Fire will probably end up as the #1 show at 10pm on Thursdays, beating out Person of Interest, which will have a much weaker lead-in, and crushing Lucky 7, which has no chance at all against the two solid performers.

    You mean Tuesdays ?

While not a fan of POI or CF. I think their numbers will both be interesting because they are both moving to that time, so at this point neither of them have an advantage. We don’t know how this move will effect either of them. But with the lead in from the voice , CF has potential to beat POI, which has one of the worst lead ins on CBS.

  • ToXiX

The worst that could really happen if POI underperforms , is it will STILL be renewed for a 4th season and end up on Friday.

I’m sure POI will do better than Vegas or Golden Boy did this season in that time slot.

  • Terry

Oops, I did mean Tuesdays. My bad.

I say Chicago Fire has the advantage because it follows the Voice, which will be a stronger lead-in than NCIS-LA for POI.

Also, as viewership continues to decline, I seriously doubt POI can rate higher than a 2.5 – let alone the 3+ some are predicting on this thread.

  • Melanie

@Patrick Really? Why on earth would Bill use a sock puppet? From what I can see he has absolutely no qualms saying whatever he wants under his own username.

I’m not really interested in many of the new shows. S.H.I.E.L.D.(its really annoying to type those periods, isn’t it?) for sure. The Originals. Maybe the Tomorrow People.

I kinda hope that Christian Slater’s new one ‘Mind Games’ which is a midseason show, does better than his last two.

  • josh2770

    @KJ styes

i am sure you probely won’t get this but i said S.H.I.E.L.D will lose against NCIS ;)

  • sarah nz

I’m sorry, but it seems I’m partially wrong. Two episodes went into production during March this year and the remaining one episode would be shot in the fall. I thought all of them were supposed to be shot in the fall. They expect season 3 to premiere in late 2013, but realistically it’d be in early 2014.”

    @ POIFanatic

Thanks for the update on Sherlock S3.

Luther S3 is rumoured to start in September this year so perhaps early 2014 for Sherlock as you say.

Also tend to agree with you that PoI should get consistent 2.5’s as a base next season, but I’m feeling slightly more conservative today and say PoI will have a base mark of 2.2 and be very happy with every tenth above that.

In a very confident mood would predict PoI with a 2.8 base mark :) But with everything (being a little novice ratings guess’er) will take the safe route and say the base will be at 2.2 and we will have to see what happens (which is the fun part).

Having more shows I am interested in coming up makes the everyday ratings struggle that much more interesting and hopefully stay rational in any posts… as to matchups that may be especially interesting to me

    PoI vs CF vs L7
    Shield vs NCIS vs B99
    NBC vs CBS Thursday Comedies
    Blacklist vs Hostages vs Castle
    GA vs Scandal
    Arrow vs Revolution

Looking forward to the ratings carnage on every day (and the comments thread) already ;)

@ Terry young females watch NCIS? Really Mark Harmon who is 30 years older than the young women is a draw?

@Hugh this Shield will be much different BUT you’re right THE Shield one of the greatest TV shows EVER!

  • Wes

Here’s what I plan on watching:

    M – None
T – None, might DVR B99 if it turns out to be good.
W – The Middle and Modern Family
R – Parks and Recreation, will check out The Millers, The Crazy Ones, and MJF.
    F – None
SU – Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, and Football

Looks like alot less tv for me this year.

  • lostboy

Survivor is aging and is not pulling the numbers
it used to. The X factor is not the beast they thought it would be. Revolution may be able to survive in that time slot. Revolution was winning it’s time slot up until the last few weeks, as I said it is a genre show so if fans are loyal they will follow it to Wednesday night, and does look like it as stabled 1.9/2.0 for spring. It is also highly DVR. People who don’t like reality tv have comedy or Syfy watch. Revolution will have to tone down the violence a little, but not much.
LOST/ALIAS al had that time slot at one time. I remember a lot of people said Revolution would be pulled after a few episodes and go the way of the Bionic Woman 2 and come back from hiatus with Event like numbers. I still believe NBC made a huge mistake on not running Revolution I will wait for a show to return if I like it. Looks like some viewers want instant gratification. Probably a few who hate the show. I do understand why NBC tried to pair it with the voice and try a cable format with it, perhaps, the wrong show to do it with. This just my belief.

@HV, HoD won’t get cancelled, now that it has a full third season, it’ll get a fourth for syndication espcially since CW exsists to syndicated as many of its parents companies shows as possible before 2015-2016& 90210,Nikita,VD,HoD are the only ones that will able to be syndicated by then. Also, BatB is Marks pet project so expect it to stick for the whole second season ,if not longer. Also, Nikita has only 6 episodes, Reign & the 100 will have only 13 episodes seasons as will Carrie Diaries. So they can’t just pull HoD and BaTB off the schedule before finishing thier seasons.I think they learned thier lesson from season when they pulled Cult early and EOMD didn’t get a full season so they ended up with extra hours of repeats.HoD has been stable in ratings for two seasons and up against the same completion on Mon when it was there last season(season one) so I doubt it’ll fall so much it’ll pulled early. It and BatB both have stable audiences..I suspect Star Crossed to replace Reign at Midseason. The Hundred probably will replace The Originals or more Likley The Tommorow People.I suspect Nikita and Famous in 12 to replace CD & Top Model on fri when they finish thier seasons.
