This TV season is all but over now, but next season will be here before you know it.  Here's a look at how each night stacks up based on the fall schedules announced this week.

Grids for all the nights are at the bottom of this post. In the past we've broken them up into separate posts for each day of the week. As we get closer to the fall season, we'' probably do just that. But it's all-in-one post for now.

Even More New Shows Than Last Year

Last year there were 20 new shows debuting in the early fall -- that count excludes "Fox Sports Saturday" and also excludes "Malibu Country" which didn't debut until later in the fall. This year there are more than 25% more new shows for a total of 26 -- that count excludes "Almost Human" and "Enlisted" which won't debut until later in the fall.

What Catches Ratings Watchers Eyes?

There will be no shortage of things to capture a ratings watcher's attention . How will CBS's expanded Thursday comedy block and new Monday comedies fare? How well will The Voice age? What happens to Person of Interest on a new night and later time with a smaller lead in? Revolution at 8pm? How bad is it going to be for Beauty and the Beast on a new day with Hart of Dixie as its lead-in?

But at least at the start of the season I can't imagine anything will capture more attention, even with ratings watchers, than the launch of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD.  Maybe I just lack imagination.  Those watching the NBA Finals on ABC in June can get back to me after they've seen the Agents of SHIELD promo for the 10,000th time.

Josh2770- NCIS is the highest rated drama on network TV. Do you honestly think that a show like Shield that will only appeal to comic book fans will beat it? I don’t see that happening, sorry.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that it’ll be a flop because it won’t be. But it won’t be the top rated drama of the season, which is a title that NCIS has held the last 3 seasons.

    Gonna be a good season

    We Are Men
    2 Broke Girls
    The Blacklist

    Brooklyn Nine Nine

    The Middle
    Super Fun Night

    The Big Bang Theory
    The Millers
    The Crazy Ones
    Two And A Half Men

    The Neighbors

    Bobs Burgers
    Family Guy

I don’t understand why people think that POI will fail on Tuesdays at 10. I think it will do great. Personally, I think it will do better than it did on Thursdays at 9. It’s competition is much weaker now.

  • HalCapone

My rhetorical questions for next season:

Will CBS reprise their 18-49 demo win success next season and will NBC fail miserably other than SNF and The Voice? Will moldy oldy CBS dramas and comedy, The Big Bang Theory start to look much less invincible next season? Will Scandal grow more next year and regularly hit the 3’s and will the 10pm hour for the networks ever experience a ratings renaissance with real legs? Will the high profile stars entering or re-entering television have more success than previous seasons?

What are everyone’s top 3 most intriguing competitive match-ups? Mine are SHIELD vs. NCIS, Wonderland vs Big Bang and POI vs Chicago Fire.

  • HalCapone

Forgot to say thanks to Robert Seidman for the comprehensive chart!

    @KJ Styles

NCIS is droping and aging highest rated drama on network TV. This season is what 3.5(not sure) so if drop 0.3 thenths shield with 3.3+ will be top rated.

Don’t get me wrong(you too.) I respect NCIS and i am sure that ncis quality will be there and may be still better. I watch that show 6 seasons. I love it.

But agents of sheald is sexy pick. Energy, hot and insane promotion = winning. Again don’t underestimate huge premiere and strong 5-6 episodes in a row after that. For example imagine premire 6.5 and after that ep2 5.3, ep3 4.8, ep4 4.4, ep.5 3.9 ep.6 3.6, ep. 7 3.3 etc. that is why i give you example with revolution this season. The question for shield is where will be stabe. If is around 3.0 after 7-8 episodes will be UNBEATABLE top rated drama for the season.

The crazy part is that days like wednesday and sunday are with one or 2 good shows and days like tuesday with so many great shows – are network idiots.

ps Again the stupid part is the 2 of 3 best action/crime dramas shoud air against eachother. The 3rd best drama is POI of course. So dump and i really hate this year schedules.

  • Peter

@HalCapone, I disagree with you about NBC. The Blacklist and looks good even if it is Silence of the Lambs meets White Collar. It could premiere well. It has about 5 million views on youtube . Last season, Revolution had that and premiered well. Agents of Shield could steal viewers from NCIS. Marvel appeals to a wide audience and Joss Whedon directed The Avengers, the 3rd hghest grossing movie of all time

  • HalCapone

It appears that every network has some “event” or limited run program next Fall. This approach has been used successfully outside the US but will American audiences embrace short run shows or mostly avoid them? Are the networks just reacting realistically to the increasing fragmentation of their auds and/or is this more a matter of saving face (and money) when so many new shows fail (no “flop” usage, PLEASE!)? Are the networks truly only committed to “limited-run” if any of these shows are widely successful? I suspect not.

  • KJ Styles

@HalCapone- NCIS vs Shield is easily the most intriguing matchup. While Shield will probably win the premiere week, I think NCIS will win overall though it may be close.

The next most intriguing matchup is the triple threat Friday battle. Grimm vs Hawaii 5-0 vs Shark Tank. It’s too close to call.

Finally, I’d go with Blacklist vs Castle. It will be interesting to see if Blacklist will be as successful as Revolution was last year with the Voice as a lead in. Intelligence in the mid-season will make this a great triple threat battle.

As for the other two you mentioned. I think Big Bang will kill Wonderland and POI will kill Chicago Fire. Wonderland and CF will still be renewed, but they have no chance of beating TBBT and POI.

  • Peter

I wonder how ABC have treated Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen with their network notes on S.H.I.E.L.D. vs. Fox with Dollhouse and Firefly. Do you think ABC is treating Joss better than Fox did because of The Avengers success? I think probably so. I know that ABC President Paul Lee is a former cable executive because he helped create BBC America. So maybe he’ll let SHIELD be a better show than Steve McPherson would have done.

  • Petar Ivanov

By the way spurs or grizzlies to the NBA finals is really bad news for abc. BAD BAD teams. OKS(last year finalis) was small market too but with big stars. And Durant vs king James was entertaiment. Shield promotion will lose a lot here. Espect big drop in ratings this year for NBA final.

  • KJ Styles

@Petar Ivanov- NCIS is indeed aging, but it’s ratings have actually gotten BETTER with age. It wasn’t until season 8 that it became the top rated drama. It dropped slightly this season, but so did every drama save for POI, Scandal, and Grimm. Shield will do well, but expecting it to become the number one drama on network TV (which is what NCIS currently is) in it’s first season is asking a lot. I predict mid to high 3’s for both shows for the season, with NCIS coming out on top.

  • KJ Styles

“By the way spurs or grizzlies to the NBA finals is really bad news for abc. BAD BAD teams”

I disagree. Spurs and Grizzlies are GREAT teams. While neither is really sexy, the Heat will draw no matter who they play. Even the Knicks will draw if they get past the Pacers and upset the Heat.

  • Petar Ivanov

    @KJ Styles

add and nbc thursday 9pm vs cbs thursday 9pm sitcoms batle.

  • HalCapone

I am not claiming NBC will fail, just asking rhetorically if their fortunes will start to improve next season. I agree that Blacklist looks good and has received good critical buzz but 10pm has become really tough for all the networks (Scandal is the exception for extraordinary ratings, albeit late in the game. I think it becomes harder each season to debut really successful new shows in the 10pm hour (Revolution debuted solid but quickly slid, while Chicago Fire has been all over the map but I don’t think it ever 3). NBC’s Awake and Hannibal are just two examples of critical fave shows that received anemic ratings. The POI move to 10pm on Tuesday will truly test the resolve of the fans of the show. I suspect POI will trend between 1.8 and 2.2, no where near the upper 2’s or lower 3’s which was where it competed with Greys. Hope all the networks win but that’s just not possible.

  • Peter

“Awake and Hannibal” were more niche in their appeal. The Blacklist looks more wide appealing.

  • KJ Styles

@Petar- I think CBS wins both those matchups easily. MJF’s show might be better quality wise than 2.5 Men, but won’t get better ratings.

  • Petar Ivanov

    @KJ Styles who said:
I disagree. Spurs and Grizzlies are GREAT teams

Yep i agree but on nba small market with no stars = bad ratings.

That is why Boston vs LA is dream math up for NBA and they always push for it or LA VS Knicks(but NY was so bad team so many years)

    @KJ Styles
You know i agree with one part. NCIS was VS THE VOICE this season. That is why was down a litle and reruns were down a litle. Again i am sure that will be 3.0+ and best CBS drama. But i already write my logic about shield.

@I predict mid to high 3?s for both shows for the season, with NCIS coming out on top.

I WILL BE HAPPY with that projections.

(What I Think Will Be) The Eight Biggest Flops of Fall 2013:

    Sean Saves the World (NBC)
    Ironside (NBC)
    Enlisted (Fox)
    Betrayal (ABC)
    The Goldbergs (ABC)
    Back in the Game (ABC)
    The Millers (CBS)
    Reign (CW)

  • Peter

Unless SHIELDS flops, I think The Goldbergs will have a good lead in which doesn’t always mean anything.
