JAY LENO AND JIMMY FALLON CONTINUE LATE-NIGHT RATINGS DOMINANCE IN WEEK OF MAY 6-10 AGAINST ABC, CBS TIME-PERIOD COMPETITION

Leno Outperforms Letterman, Kimmel in 18-49, 18-34 and 25-54 Demos as Well as Total Viewers While Fallon Defeats Ferguson, ‘Nightline’ in Same Categories

Leno and Fallon Generate Gains vs. the Same Week Last Year and for the Second Quarter to Date

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – May 16, 2013 – Both “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” delivered bigger audiences than their respective ABC and CBS time-period competition in every key ratings category for the week of May 6-10.

Leno delivered his biggest 18-49 audience (1.104 million) since the week of Dec. 17-21, while it was Fallon’s largest audience in the demo (679,000) in four weeks and biggest overall audience (1.768 million) in five weeks.

Leno has now delivered bigger 18-49 audiences than “Late Show with David Letterman” for the last 25 weeks in a row and topped “Jimmy Kimmel Live” for 16 of their 18 head-to-head weeks. In total viewers, Leno has out-delivered “Late Show” for 29 weeks in a row and “Kimmel” for 18 of 18 weeks.

Fallon has now generated bigger 18-49 audiences than “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” for 30 of the last 31 weeks and prevailed in total viewers for 27 of the last 29 weeks. Versus “Nightline” in their head-to-head half-hour, Fallon has out-delivered the ABC series for 18 weeks in a row in viewers 18-49 and 13 of the last 15 weeks in total viewers.

Versus the same week a year ago, Leno was up 7 percent in viewers 18-49, 27 percent in viewers 18-34 and 3 percent in total viewers, while Fallon was up 9 percent in viewers 18-49, 14 percent in viewers 18-34 and 11 percent in total viewers.

Both Leno and Fallon are posting strong numbers six weeks into the second quarter of 2013, with Jay up versus one year ago by 4 percent in viewers 18-49 and up 5 percent in viewers 18-34, while Jimmy is up for the second quarter by 6 percent in viewers 18-49, 18 percent in viewers 18-34 and 7 percent in total viewers.

    Not only did they want to, they did. Wonder how much of this bump can be attributed to a final lap around the pool.

    Possible. But to whomever it may concern, please know that the change in the NBC 10 pm situation was no small thing.

    There were times earlier this year that NBC would do less than 1.0 for the *week*. Shockingly low. In better times they’d rally to 1.2.

    Last week they hit 1.67. A 40% gain on a weekly basis is a pretty massive shift.

    I’m happy for Fallon. And there’s no way CBS should move Ferguson up to 11:30 when Letterman finally retires. By then, Fallon will be entrenched and I don’t think Ferguson would translate well at 11:30 anyway (sort of the same problem as Conan had with the average viewer).

    CBS should go hard after Jon Stewart to replace Letterman and go up against Fallon.

    Also, I think Letterman is his own worst enemy with his politics. I’m pretty liberal and I even find all of the Republican bashing growing tiresome!

    I don’t know how to explain it, but as much as I admire Craig Ferguson’s attempts to freshen up late night, I find myself getting tired of him rather quickly…especially since they redid the set. This new set just isn’t him. And I doubt he would make that transition to 11:30…nor does he seem to want to.

    Probably wanted more critical acclaim and viral videos. Because as you know, that’s how you generate wins in Late night or any other part of the day. Just ask 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, Community, and Mad Men.

    Certainly isn’t because they were afraid of Kimmel winning the younger end of the Demo because he isn’t.

    JKL’s and Dave’s ratings are really not very far apart. But I’ve heard how JKL’s “success” somehow freaked out NBC into canning Jay. Yet Dave’s ratings are a sign he should hang it up? I can’t really buy that story. I think it’s more likely that NBC was worried Fallon might jump ship and so decided to go with the guy with more time left. Really nothing to do with JKL.

    Agree, JC. It was very obvious to many of us that Leno was gone in 2014 long before we had the slightest idea Kimmel was moving to 11:30. Fallon may simply have been too big of a production to operate at 12:30 in the current environment, with ratings dipping into the 0.4s. So they may have felt forced into a choice between present and future. Good decision, imo.

    But I have a hypothetical question for anyone in the mood to answer it. If NBC had turned its ratings around 6 months earlier and Tonight was shattering the competition like it is now, would NBC have had the guts to gas Jay Leno?

    The “Jimmy Fallon tax credit” is probably an indication that the Fallon camp had a hand in forcing out Leno. Would a New York state elected official come up with that tax break on their own? No. Would an NBC executive think of that idea on their own? No. Most Likely the Jimmy Fallon/Lorne Michaels camp conspired with New York officials to get the legislation passed as an incentive to influence NBC’s decision during a time of cost cutting.

    Fallon played it very wisely by being friendly with Leno and by making it appear as though he had no part in forcing Leno out, and he figures that the time is now to go for the big paychecks before market demand for late night talk shows complete collapse or fragment to the point that $12 million a year salaries will be unheard of in the future.

    If I was NBC, I would have stayed with Leno and let Fallon move to CBS or where ever. Leno could probably dominate for 5 more years while they groom another replacement, Seth Meyers or whoever. I think Leno would have won in a 2014 scenario of Leno vs Kimmel vs Fallon.

    I think they’d think twice. I don’t think Fallon is going to dominate late night. While his format is different, 50% of the things he does before 1AM shows up are really dumb and I pretty much flip the TV off at that point.

    Yes, for sure. Tax credits are a very big aspect of show business.

    I’ve read that the real reason for Jay’s departure is that Greenblatt doesn’t like Jay mocking NBC’s 5th place position.

    I agree. The bloom is leaving the rose for me too. I don’t think Fallon has long term staying power.

    I agree Ann. Douglas likes to mock Jay’s “Meal or No Meal” but does anybody in their right mind think “Wheel of Carpet Samples” is any better?
