CBS has decided to pull tonight's scheduled season finale of Mike & Molly and replace it with a repeat because the plot involves a tornado hitting Chicago. Executives decided the topic was too sensitive because of the tornado in Oklahoma City today. In a press release, a CBS spokesperson stated,"“Due to the tragic events this afternoon in Oklahoma, we are pre-empting tonight’s season finale of Mike & Molly, which has a related storyline. A repeat broadcast of ‘Mike & Molly’ will run in the time period. The season finale will be broadcast at an appropriate date.”

People’s lack of sensitivity is shocking.

@Frank that’s the point of many people here. There was no chance even if CBS aired it that it would have aired anywhere in Oklahoma. So nobody affected would see it to get upset or offended. If any CBS affiliate showed anything but the news of the tornado last night i’d be shocked. Personally i think that would be more upsetting to them seeing that over and over and being asked countless stupid questions about what happened then a tv show.

Even if you don’t live in that area you can be affected by it because you have relatives or friends in the tornado area. And even if you haven’t there will be lots of people wo care enough about the tragedy. So even if the majority of regular viewers has no problems with it, there will be lots of people who feel otherwise.
Also you have to think about the sense of advertisement in comedy shows. CBS tries to create a good mood so chances are higher, people will buy the stuff they see in ads. Reminding the people about the tragedy that happened the same day will just lead to switching channels or care less about the ads. In both options your ad customers won’t be happy.
Last but not least: I don’t think CBS worries about those few people who would be so angry to write letters or campaign against CBS. It’s more about the people who just don’t like the topic of the episode and switch channels.
