ABC Ranks No. 1 for the 2013 May Sweep Among Adults 18-49 and Key Women

ABC’s Dramas Dominate in May with 8 of the Top 10 Telecasts in Adults 18-49

The Net Airs 3 of May’s Top 10 TV Shows in Adults 18-49, Including the No. 1 10 O’clock Series with “Scandal”

ABC is the No. 1 Network in May on Monday-Friday from 10-11pm in Key Adults

2013 May Sweep (4/25-5/20/13 - 26 of 28 Nights – Live + Same Day)

With just two nights left to count heading into tonight’s season finale of “Dancing” and the closers for its Wednesday lineup on the final night of the period, ABC ranks No. 1 for the 2013 May Sweep in Adults 18-49 (1.8/5), tied with CBS, while leading NBC and Fox by 6% each (NBC and Fox = 1.7/5).  ABC is also the leader for the month in Women 18-34 (1.7/6) and Women 18-49 (2.3/7).

  • ABC Dramas Dominate the May Sweep: With Thursday’s combo of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” ABC delivered 8 of the Top 10 drama telecasts during the May Sweep in Adults 18-49: “Scandal-5/16” – No. 2, “Scandal-5/9” – No. 3, “Grey’s-5/9” and “Grey’s-5/16” tied at No. 4, “Grey’s-5/2” – No. 8, “Scandal-4/25” – No. 9 and “Grey’s-4/25” – No. 10.  Dominating at 10:00 p.m., the Net aired each of the Top 7 highest rated 10 o’clock drama telecasts for the month in Adults 18-49, with “Scandal” claiming the Top 4 positions and “Castle” claiming the next 3 positions.

  • Highest-Rated Series of the Month: ABC claims 3 of the Top 10 TV shows during May in Adults 18-49 with “Modern Family” (No. 4), “Grey’s Anatomy” (No. 8) and “Scandal” (No. 9).  In fact “Scandal” is the month’s No. 1 10 o’clock series in Adults 18-49.  ABC’s “DWTS” is the most-watched unscripted series overall, outdrawing both installments of Fox’s “American Idol” and NBC’s “The Voice.”

  • ABC is the Only Net to Improve its Local News Lead-in Audience and Ranks No. 1 in Key Adults: ABC is the only net to grow its overall audience year to year from 10:00-11:00 p.m. on Monday-Friday as a lead-in to affiliates’ late-local news, gaining 7% over last May’s average (7.5 million vs. 7.0 million).  CBS and NBC are both down in the hour year to year.  In addition, ABC was the No. 1 network during the month on Monday-Friday from 10:00-11:00 p.m. in Adults 18-49 (1.9/6) and Adults 25-54 (2.5/6), beating CBS (1.7/5 and 2.4/6) and NBC (1.5/4 and 1.9/5).

    Not bad, ABC, not bad!

Glad to see its doing well since most of my favorite shows are on ABC

  • HotLatino4GayMarriage

    ABC has the best shows!

  • rob60990

This is why despite being in last place ABC isnt in such terrible shape.

ABC ranks No. 1 for the 2013 May Sweep in Adults 18-49 (1.8/5)
    Adults 18-49 (1.8/5)

1.8 is seriously number 1 for a sweeps period?

ABC fanboys can celebrate “being No. 1″ but when number one is a sorry, pathetic little number it’s not much to celebrate. How atrociously low for all the networks.

  • Samuel

ABC is probably my favourite network. It always seems to bring something new to the table instead of CBS’s constant stream of cop/fbi/cia pilots, NBC’s only real hit ‘The Voice’ and Fox’s endless push of some really horrible comedies and TWO reality singing competitions.

    ABC has some HORRIBLE scheduling issues, but overall it picks up the shows I’m more interested in and it’s a pretty steady network. Correct me if I’m wrong but in terms of original drama’s with the highest demographic pull it’s got to be;

    #1 CBS
    #2 ABC
    #3 NBC
    #4 Fox
    #5 The CW

Right? Or are Fox & NBC the other way around?

  • Melissa

ABC would not be in last if it had sports like all the other networks.

  • Zturk

That is correct but they fit well into the Disney empire as they go after the female audience while ESPN goes for the male audience.

  • Doug

This is why ABC never upsets its schedule too much. It has a number of solid playing pieces, but it plagued by problems that it never seems to be able to solve. NBC has 1 good piece (The Voice), and a whole lot of garbage. I would say that ABC is even in better shape overall than Fox.

But yikes! A 1.8 wins sweeps. I wonder when the networks will finally bottom out.

Question – what was the number 1 drama telecast if it wasn’t Scandal?

cbs wins year. ncis most watched program beats nfl on nbc

Question – what was the number 1 drama telecast if it wasn’t Scandal?

NCIS’s season finale last Tuesday (3.4).

  • Raul

    Go ABC!!!

  • Juan

I wonder has anyone calculated just scripted shows average for the networks, I feel like without sports, events, and such the ranking would look very different.

  • christian

Last I checked, College Football, NASCAR, and the NBA are considered sports programming.

  • Justin121

Football in the Fall at NBC, FOX, and CBS doesn’t makes this a level playing field (pun not intended).

I’ve had this opinion for several years:

CBS and ABC are the strongest networks.

FOX hid behind Idol and no 10pm to drag their average down.

    NBC is just sad

Now that Idol is no longer the force it once was, and with NBC having The Voice, and allthree of NBC, CBS, and FOX having football and Super Bowl rotating between them, the playing field has kinda leveled between them.

ABC has an unfair disadvantage and, unless they have another 2004-2005 (Despetate Housewives), they’ll never be in the running for #1.

They’re aware of that and are probably okay with it.

Given all that, they actually WON (what’s arguably) the most important sweeps period of the year. So congratulaions, ABC.

  • Justin121

ABC beat CBS in the “old” demo (25-54).

    2.5 to 1.7.

Beating your strongest competitor at their own game.

    Thumps up.

  • David

I’ve always thought ABC has the most stable and strong ratings when it comes to scripted programming. It’s a shame they don’t have sports propping them up. Once Idol finally deflates at Fox, ABC still won’t catch them because of sports. NBC just cheat. If they didn’t have sports and The Voice their network would be a barren wasteland.

  • tv_viewer

People keep forgetting that ABC had college football on Saturdays during the fall. By my calculations, ABC had a 1.8 rating for the entire 2012-2013 television season. CBS, NBC, and Fox are all likely to finish at 2.0 or above for this television season.

  • Anthony

ABC would not be in last if it had sports like all the other networks.

Firstly, ABC did air sports this year, College Football Saturdays, which typically dwarf the ratings of other networks on Saturdays. Secondly, if you are referring to the fact that the other networks air NFL and ABC doesn’t, I hardly feel sorry for ABC in this instance. They HAD the rights to air the NFL, but they made the business decision to put the NFL on ESPN, since they could make more money from it there. They made their bed, now they must lay in it.

  • ragincajun

Notice – it says “tie”, not #1. Technically, CBS is leading 1.84 to 1.75 in the demo so far in May sweeps, but ABC rounded CBS number down 0.4 and rounded its number up 0.5 for the press release.

  • rob60990

Saturday College Football doesn’t do so well every week. Most weeks it pulled low to mid 1s. A couple in the 2s and there was I believe 1 big game. Can we seriously compare that to the 8s and 9s that SNF pulls?
