Awkward is going to need a lead-in again. These numbers are terrible.

  • LOL

    @Matt

um you have new york and boston in that series. no one outside of new york and new england is watching. how many of the 1.7 mil do you think is coming from other states?

  • Matt

    @LOL

Umm, it’s on a network with 80% of the household availability that the NBA has. Pile that on to the fact that the series was already 2-0 and it’s the NHL’s Semi-Finals vs. the NBA’s Conference Finals.

As I said, NHL trending up, NBA trending down. You can make the point about local ratings all you want (Even if it does suck) because I can just fire back with the fact that if so it’d raise local TV contracts. The MLB gets by just fine on mainly local ratings.

  • Torrid

ah ha the fiesty Mattie is back – how precious! – you do recall the hiding I gave you last season Matt? I know you do, those welts from the verbal lashes I administered across your hockey loving face are pretty hard to heal – so i did notice that you were awfully quiet around here this season …. until now :)

But nevermind let bygones ….. now pay attention Mattie boy, lets examine your sudden cause for joy after I put these numbers in perspective.

You see where this is going Mattie? The NBA draft … the freeeking draft!
crushed both NHL playoff games COMBINED!!!

Now Muttie lets examine your laughably childish statement (seems analysis is not a strong point) – NBA TRENDING DOWN NHL TRENDING UP …. what the heck does that even mean?

The weakest NBA pairing (Spurs/Grizzlies) up against the strongest NHL pairing (NewYork/Boston) – the result? [4620 - 1752] = 2868.
2.868 million more viewers for the weak NBA matchup – put another way over 2.5 times the national audience preferred the NBA over the NHL playoff games – with the weakest NBA pairing against the strongest NBA pairing. Looking closer at the matchups – the Grizzlies are a new small market team with no national pull, the Spurs are simply boring albeit very good and are a known national ratings killer. However, the Bruins and the Rangers are storied hockey franchises within their local regions – both are big city traditional teams (original six I think they call them) with a well established history and national recognition. Yet for all those advantages this NHL pairing is being killed by the worst of teh NBA pairings in the national ratings. Need I say more? …… lol!

A word to the wise Mattie boy, please refrain from using the word ‘trending’ if you do not understand it ok! Seeing hockey still struggling to make 2 million so deep into the playoffs with the strongest team pairing does not bode well for hockey’s future man.

Looks like I might have to apply a few more disciplinary verbal lashes across your back this season Matt – but believe me its for your own good!

  • Matt

Lol, all the points that need to be made were already made above. Not my fault if you can’t read.

But do continue bragging about having “So much better” numbers (That are down from last season) in the Conference Finals vs. the NHL’s Conference Semi-Finals, all while on a network available to, what is it, 35 million more households?

And you want to use “Weak matchups” as an excuse? Then how about you stop getting hard off the Pens/Sens series’ so-called “Low” numbers. Yeah, I’d expect a series between the smallest American market and a Canadian market would have “low” numbers. Go figure…

Try giving me a challenge, Torrid. This is far too easy. As I said before, The NHL is trending up. The NBA? Not so much. It’s been that way for a few years now and doesn’t show any sign of stopping.

  • Matt

My bad, it’s actually just 21 million households…

So the NHL at roughly 78% of the availability of the NBA. Hmm… 78% of the NBA’s number puts them down to a 1.5 (Rounded up from 1.48) and 3.6 million viewers.

Boy, that gap is closing more and more…

  • Elijah

    I agree with Torrid.

So since the NBA’s ratings have decreased year to year and the NHL’s ratings have increased (I don’t actually know if that is true I am just taking your word for it) That means the NHL is more popular than the NBA?

That is like saying since the show Archer on FX has seen it’s ratings increase while Two and a Half Men on CBS has seen it’s ratings decrease in recent years, that means Archer is more popular?

And I love Hockey, I live in Minnesota. I’m just being realistic and not delusional. Just because I am objective and realistic doesn’t make me a hockey hater. I also love Jimmy John’s but I don’t go around saying Jimmy John’s is a larger, more popular chain than Subway is.

  • Elijah

And using the “This channel isn’t as widely available excuse” What was your excuse when they aired Games 1-2 and 5-6 of the Stanley Cup Finals on NBC last year? A nationally broadcast primetime station that every one gets?

  • Matt

Who said it was more popular?

People really need to learn the definition of the word “trending”.

Hockey’s ratings are going up, basketball’s aren’t. Read in context.

  • Elijah

Yeah but you’re making it seem like the NHL is comparable to the NBA ratings wise. Which it is not. This coming from an objective hockey fan in a hockey crazy state (Minnesota)
    Just being realistic.

  • david

Wow Awkward and Girl Codes ratings are very similar. I guess it has a similar audience.

  • LOL

Matt is gonna have a stroke when he sees last night’s numbers.

  • McGramm

How is NBA numbers going down when they had last season the best ratings in the regular season EVER! and 2 seasons ago the best ratings in the playoffs since Jordan retired. And it’s obvious the matchups matter, if the western conference finals were the Lakers against the Clippers they might be posting records. Memphis doesn’t have a big draw, and that’s ok, you can’t always have the big guns, in fact it can get boring that way.

  • Torrid

[[ ....how about you stop getting hard off the Pens/Sens series’ so-called “Low” numbers.... -OR- "hey you guys look at this red colored herring" ]]

sorry Matt …. the low numbers I referred to above is not for the Pens/Sens BUT the vaunted RANGERS/BRUINS – as close to hockey royalty as you can get – the weak NBA pairing is slaughtering Hockey’s elite in the ratings – That’s whi I’m talking about – don’t try to change the focus .. aight!!

    —————————————————————————
@LOL….”Matt is gonna have a stroke when he sees last night’s numbers” you are right :)

I think I’m a gonna put out an APB for Mattie on the Wednesday thread – don’t want the fella to hurt himself – frustration and unfulfilled expectations is such a huge downer…. the poor boy may not survive this!!!

  • Matt

Gonna have a stroke when I see last night’s numbers? Not really, don’t expect much from smallest market vs. Canadian market.
