Mariah Carey has officially departed the American Idol judging panel. Today her publicity firms, PMK-BNC, tweeted:

Update: Nicki Minaj has also tweeted that she has left American Idol.

No word on whether their fellow judge Nicki Minaj is also leaving the show, but rumors abound that AI is recruiting former contestants Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert and Clay Aiken to take over next year's panel.

the problem is we put the success of these kind of shows by the way the judges are, its should be about the undiscovered talent. Not like the show wants these people to actually judge how they’re singing because any negative remarks is potential loss of sale on iTunes for them.

Idols not going anywhere, the show may have dipped in numbers considerably but the show is still a cash cow for FOX. They will milk the series for as long as they can.

Honestly i don’t care about American Idol. American Idol is just all wore out these reality shows like E channel that keeps show the new kardashian show everyday.

They’re “jumping the shark” if these new judges are confirmed. Not that they haven’t jumped the shark years ago though.

    Absolutely @ Mike K

Wow who cares! Please people…stop watching this crap show. Scripted is the way to go. I.e breaking bad, parks rec,.falling skies. Dallas etc

American Idol is like ER. Complete cast turnover. Only Ryan is left from season 1 and he is likely to leave in a season or two

    @NBC Fan
The poster of that comment (Nathan) was being sarcastic.

No news that Mariah Carey-Nicki Manaj are leaving. What is a surprise is that the producers let the feud go on and they didn’t try to stop it.

Yah- the show likely wanted to clean house. So they let the judges (including Randy Jackson) imply it was their choice, when, in all likelihood, it probably wasn’t.

Mariah Carey was the biggest waste of money I have seen. She was boring, dull, devoid of personality, overused DARLING, and she rambled into complete incoherant nothing. She was a major BUST IMO. Nicki Minaj I thought was better but she was bad for the Idol brand. Honestly this is FOX’s way of letting them like they wanted to leave the real truth is their contract options were not picked up for another season. Mariah should go back and make music she is great at that but was beyond one of the worst judges I ever saw. Its really a statement just because you are a superstar doesn’t make u a great judge.

Most people turned it off this year because of Nicki Minaj, including myself.

Clarkson is a good pick as she is the original Idol and a draw
Hudson is also good as she has a big voice and the Hollywood crowd loves her
Aiken IMO is also a good choice as he has proven himself on Broadway and music sales
Lambert is a waste, no matter how much they push this dope he doesn’t produce sales or anything…replace him with someone else (ANYONE ELSE) even Taylor Hicks who I loath would be better then Glambert.

  • Joseph

Look for Ryan Seacrest to also leave the show, likely to replace Matt Lauer on “Today”.

And if that happens, I can see Erin Andrews replacing him to host the show.

  • Ralph Hahn

I don’t watch the show, nor do I watch any of its competitors or reality TV in general.

But, I do know this much. Stacking the judges with A.I. former winners couldn’t be more wrong. Except for maybe Kelly Clarkson, none of those mentioned has enough background and experience to ‘judge’ other contestants. They can go to more stars. Superstars, commanding super salaries, are not necessary.

  • Tony

Clay Aiken? Do that if they want to give it a quick painful death.

  • Josh

Good Riddance to both. Lets get some people on there that actually know how to sing and can actually understand the contestants.

  • bob

    why should anyone care?

  • Andrew Dias

I guess that the fact that Mariah Carey is one of the best female singers of all time doesn’t count for anything, right?

  • HalCapone

Blue haired ladies love Clay Aiken so if that is the target audience, I say go for it. I’m sure he could squeeze in Idol in between auto dealership openings. Not sure who likes glam rock screamer, Lambert except maybe Adam Lambert. Hudson was a proven draw for Smash…not. And bland Clarkson doesn’t scream excitement, either. Altogether, it sounds like another desperate attempt to bring a spark back to Idol through the judges. Obviously, it’s never been about the contestants like any of these cheesy singing competition shows. What’s that punchline about shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic?
