ESPN Tips Mexico City-based Reporter John Sutcliffe to Cover Mexican National Team through FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil

Mexico City-based reporter John Sutcliffe will lead ESPN’s comprehensive English- and Spanish-language coverage of the Mexican National Team (El Tri) through the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013, it was announced today.  Sutcliffe, who is bilingual, will be with El Tri as the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) Gold Cup champions represent the region in the quadrennial tournament, reporting primarily for ESPN’s English-language coverage of the two-week event in Brazil from June 15–30.

Leading up to the Confederations Cup, Sutcliffe will also travel with the team to its crucial 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches at Jamaica (Tuesday, June 4); at Panama (Friday, June 7); and vs. Costa Rica in Mexico City (Tuesday, June 11). Sutcliffe’s reporting during the FIFA World Cup qualifying matches will be featured primarily on ESPN Deportes’ studio programming – including special editions of Fútbol Picante and SportsCenter.

“Mexico is an elite team in CONCACAF with an exceptionally loyal and passionate fan base in the United States,” said Jed Drake, ESPN senior vice president and executive producer.  “John has an outstanding history covering the Mexican National Team and his reporting will enrich our presentation of the Confederations Cup to all fans, including our growing Hispanic audience.”

Since joining ESPN Deportes in August 2000, Sutcliffe has distinguished himself as one of the network’s most versatile reporters.  In 2010, he covered the Mexican National Team during ESPN’s award-winning presentation of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa – his fifth straight World Cup in that role. Sutcliffe’s assignment with the Mexican National Team leading up to and during the FIFA Confederations Cup marks ESPN’s most comprehensive news and information commitment to a soccer team outside a FIFA World Cup tournament.

Sutcliffe’s “El Tri” reporting itinerary:

Tue, June 4 Jamaica vs. Mexico World Cup Qualifier Kingston, Jamaica

In addition to news and information reporting, Sutcliffe serves as sideline reporter for “El Tri on ESPN” – the company’s English-language telecasts of the Mexican National Team’s home matches in the United States.  He joins the booth commentary team of Fernando Palomo and Alejandro Moreno in calling those matches.

“John’s skillset as a journalist and his ability to work effectively across languages and cultures make him an unparalleled asset in our game-around-the-game coverage of marquee sports events such as soccer, the NFL, and golf’s four majors,” added Rodolfo Martinez, vice president of productions for ESPN International and ESPN Deportes.

Sutcliffe also serves as sideline reporter for Monday Night Football on ESPN Deportes, working with Alvaro Martin and Super Bowl-winning kicker Raul Allegre, as well as commentator for ESPN’s Spanish-language coverage of the four golf majors:  The Masters, U.S. Open, The Open Championship and PGA Championship.
