I see DAYS has moved ahead of GH is the ratings, that doesn’t surprise me! DAYS is on a roll with adding very interesting pairings such as Kate and Rafe. I also think we are in for much surprise with stories revolving around Kristen as wel as Nicole. I said it would take a few months but by the end of this year we will see DAYS numbers getting close to 3 million.
Y & R is also doing much better. I just hate it that the GREAT GREAT Katherine Chancellor is no more, I will miss her character so much! She was one of a kind!!

  • lampshade

@Jay TN. Yes I wondered about the effects of preemptions as well. I think it may impinge more on casual or ‘floating’ viewers-the very people you want to become regular viewers. Loyal fans like me will hunker down and wait for the next showing.
I hope it doesn’t affect DOOLs ratings too much. Days had a good May sweep but I think the recovery is still a bit fragile and IMO has elements that need tweaking. The storylines have our attention right now, so over to the creativr team to keep it that way.

“All Soaps Up” Now there is a headline I can love.

@jonboyelk, I agree with you. As a long time OLTL & GH fan, I am not digging the return of the “GH3″. I am trying to reserve my judgment, but my biggest concern is the Franco reveal. Love RH & James Franco, but totally hate the character/storyline or anything Franco on GH. Other than him being a Quartermaine, I just don’t get why they are going in this direction. RH was very clear that he wasn’t comfortable with being the “redeemed/loveable rapist” on OLTL. Why make him this loathsome creature when he has really good chemistry with pretty much anyone in the room and so much potential? They “freed” him of the Todd persona only to make him a rapist again. SMH.

  • MBmomof3

I am so going to miss Mrs. C on Y&R. I know not everyone likes Phyllis, but I am really going to miss her. Michelle Stafford is so good at being bad IMO. Any opinions on whether Phyllis should be recast at some point?

Loving pretty much everything about DOOL right now (except Dannifer).

Don’t watch B&B enough to have an opinion. But, Brooke preggers? C’mon…

Loving the OLTL & AMC reboots! Unfortunately, I am a “binge viewer”. I’ve been binging on soaps since the VCR came along. But, I thought that was part of the point of Internet based shows; watch anywhere, anytime, on your schedule. Too bad it isn’t lucrative for the production companies when you don’t watch the day they first air.

  • UmAnyways

Wow Days!!! used to be last placed for so long now it’s over popular crazy fan show General Hospital? is this for real? wow! DOOL FO LYFE!

  • Deeann

GH is the worst soap by far. The ratings say it all!

  • Jason

GH must bring the vets back. What is it with Scorpio in a coma for 6 months? For God’s sake, bring him back on a permanent basis. If Kimberly McCullough doesn’t want to commit to the show, kill Robin off once and for all or bring her back short term and give her, Emma and Patrick a happy ending fairwell. Scorpio, Duke and Anna could mix it up with Dr. Obrecht and Faison again while freeing Robin from the hospital.
Also, bring back Heather, the Betty Davis character of daytime.
If Sonny can avoid prison for all of these years, surely there can be a way to write Heather out of that sanitarium.

  • Jason

As far s Franco, another borefest of a story, how about bringing Susan Moore back from the dead? Along with Scotty and Heather, she was a great villain in 1982/1983 before her demise, which resulted in one of the best murder mysteries in GH history.

  • jonboyelk

I know I’m gonna take heat for saying this but…..re the vets on GH: do we really want this to be Geriatric Hospital? While I certainly enjoyed seeing the vets around the 50th anniversary let’s face it—-the years have not been kind to most. With the possible exception of Genie Francis I found myself paying more attention to wrinkles, bags, botox and paunch than I was to whatever they were saying. Not to be age discriminatory (I’m no spring chicken myself) but its not what I would want the cast to be comprised of. For instance, Bobbie cannot be the Bobbie we knew and loved looking the way she does now. Noah Drake and Frisco Jones heartthrob days are long behind them.

  • Bex

@ Jonboyelk, what someone looks like has no bearing on what they can bring to the table. You are an ageist, and you are exactly what’s wrong with the world today. Rather than seek out a good story, with the most talented group you act like some common simple minded teen focusing on the wrong thing. You want the cast to be filled with young, good looking 20-something who can’t act their way out of a bag? You clearly aren’t old enough as you say, otherwise you would understand on some level the pressure of age, try understanding thinking about what female entertainers have to deal with in an industry dominated by men.

  • JayTN

Mark your calendars, as CBS has confirmed that same-day reruns of Y&R will air exclusively on the cable network TVGN (formerly TV Guide Network) starting Monday, July 1. The reruns will continue to air at 7:00 PM, the same time slot that Y&R currently airs on the soon-to-be-defunct SOAPnet.

  • JayTN

In regards to the “ageism” debate…my only comment is that the 18-49 and 25-54 age group are who advertisers want to reach. Since advertisers pay the bills for the networks, that is the age group that the networks target. Now, a 49 year old has very little in common with an 18 year and vice versa, and naturally their opinions on what makes a good storyline will vary as well. Some of these “veteran” characters/actors may have already had their heyday before current viewers ever started to tune in, so they have no attraction or sentimental feelings for the long-ago characters and actors.

I can see both sides of the ageism debate that have already been laid out, but the fact of the matter is that youth rules in the entertainment industry. I doubt that a series like “The Golden Girls” could exist on television today. “Hot in Cleveland” is about the closest copy that their is today to “Golden Girls” and the ages of the actresses on “Cleveland” are generally younger than the ages of the “Girls” were. Notice how 007, James Bond, keeps getting younger and younger?

I have seen the charge leveled against Y&R producer Jill Farren Phelps that she doesn’t like women actors over the age of 40 (even though Phelps herself is 63). That mentality seems to be commonplace in the entertainment industry, regardless of how fair or unfair it seems. Society continues to change (just look at the attitudes about gay people over the last few years), and I remember someone famously saying that in today’s society Marilyn Monroe would be considered fat. Sometimes the changes in society are not always good changes.

I was looking at several of the early 1980s cast credits from some of the shows, you know when GH was #1 in the ratings. Using IMDB and other bio databases, here’s a sample of “over 50s” CONTRACTED actors from 1980/1981:

    John Beradino – Steve Hardy*
    Emily McLaughlin – Jessie Brewer*
    Rachel Ames – Audrey Hardy
    Peter Hansen – Lee Baldwin*
    Susan Brown – Gail Baldwin
    Lieux Dressler – Alice Grant
    Frank Maxwell – Dan Rooney*
    David Lewis – Edward Quartermaine*
    Norma Connelly – Ruby Anderson
    Anna Lee- Lila Quartermaine*
    George Gaynes – Frank Smith*
    Eddie Ryder – Slick
    Billie Burke – O’Reilly

    * Actors that were over 60 in 1980!!!

I was 10 and 11 during those two years and thought most of these actors were great. Edward, and O’Reilly were and still are two of my all time favorite characters.

Maybe the reverse is true. Older actors bring up ratings. How else can you explain the jump last year? It wasn’t the 20 somethings.

  • JayTN

Where were the increases at for GH over the last year? Did the “jump” come from viewers in the 18-49 category or from those viewers outside of it. If the jump came from people age 50 or older, unfortunately, the advertisers don’t really care about them.

The focus on the 18-49 year olds is a television industry wide practice. Witness the cancellations of “CSI: NY” and “Vegas”, both of which had a high viewer total (more than 10 million viewers often times), yet their percentage of 18-49 year old viewers were low. Too low to justify a renewal by CBS.

I also don’t believe one can compare a soap in the 1980s to a soap in the 2010s, even if it is the same soap. So much has changed during those 30+ years. Back then, the writers could take their time and let a storyline play our for months, or even years. Viewers today don’t have the patience to sit around and wait that long for payoffs.

The conclusion “older actors bring up ratings” may be technically true (I haven’t researched the ratings enough to know if that is true or not), but the key to success lies in which ratings are going up. The 18-49 ratings, or the over 50 ratings. Unfortunately not all ratings are created equal. (For the record, I’m not saying I agree with the focus on 18-49 year olds, just noting that focus is a fact of life for television producers/executives.)

  • Chrisann D

I too believe that just because an actor is over 40 that they can’t attract younger viewers. Or that younger actors can’t bring in the older viewers.
If the acting and writing are good that shouldn’t make a difference. I am glad all soaps are up but it is May sweeps (or was May sweeps) I was hoping for more of a boost. Does anyone know how AMC and OLTL are doing on HULU? It is much easier for me to watch now that they have scaled down the number of episodes. I am enjoying both very much. Also Days, Y&R and GH have been can’t miss TV (for me anyhow) Go soaps!!

  • Mike

Well Frons himself said that no one wanted to watch the problems of middle age woman….that was what he said when he wanted to get rid of Genie Francis from GH.

And from a lot of the comments you read he was right to some degree. Even though it doesn’t fit with me. I would rather watch a Genie Francis in the character of Laura any day over some twenty-something model who only got the job due to her looks and can’t act her way out of a paper bag.

I understand the problems that women face, and know why that leads them to plastic surgery. I only have a problem with it when they can no longer use their face to show emotion. And sadly that has happened with many of them.

But that is not the only problem with some of these soaps anymore. Several rumors in the last few years have come up often that with one behind the scenes set the young men are put under more scrutiny than the women. They often have to audition in their underwear. That has been a blind item in the mags and on sites for awhile.

  • robert sprague

  • Dee

That Silas character is awful on GH! We want to talk about people that aren’t aging well. Look at Michael Easton. He looks so skeevy, like he drives a rape van. Gross!

  • Dee

@Chrisann D OLTL/AMC apparently isn’t doing that well. They have shut down production. They claim its because of union stuff but who knows!

  • GHFan

Next weeks ratings will likely show another drop for GH. When will ABC wake up and do something about RC’s terrible writing?
