New York, NY – June 6, 2013  – Today, SHOWTIME announced that its critically-acclaimed comedy series NURSE JACKIE has been renewed for a sixth season to premiere in 2014.  The announcement was made by David Nevins, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc.  A co-production of SHOWTIME and Lionsgate, NURSE JACKIE stars actress Edie Falco in her Emmy® Award-winning role as Jackie Peyton, a strong-willed and brilliant – but very flawed – emergency room nurse.  The fifth season of the series currently airs on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT, and the season five finale will air on Sunday, June 16. Emmy Award nominee Clyde Phillips serves as showrunner and executive producer.  Caryn Mandabach, Richie Jackson and Tom Straw also serve as executive producers. Production for the sixth season will begin this fall in New York.

NURSE JACKIE is an essential part of the SHOWTIME brand, and we are thrilled with the series' growth in its fifth season,” said Nevins. “Under the new leadership of Clyde Phillips, and with an amazing cast led by Edie Falco, this show is as sharp and compelling and entertaining as ever. I’m excited to get to see the next chapter in Jackie’s life.”

NURSE JACKIE season five currently averages 3.1 million weekly viewers across platforms, ten percent above its prior season through the same time frame. The series also stars Merritt Wever, Paul Schulze, Dominic Fumusa, Anna Deavere Smith and Peter Facinelli. Bobby Cannavale and Morris Chestnut are season five’s special guest stars. Stephen Wallem, Betty Gilpin and Adam Ferrara are guest stars.

Umm, doesn’t this show get like a 0.2 rating and less than 600K in viewers?

  • QW

The only time it’s dipped below 600K this season was Memorial Day weekend.

In terms of the first airing of episodes, this season has been up over last season and the season before that, and maybe even above its season 2 numbers.

  • Ralph Hahn

Although, I no longer have Showtime, I’m pushing for “Nurse Jackie,” because Edie Falco is one of my favorite actresses. Go Edie!

  • Special K

Viewership is up this year, I think the addition of Morris Chestnut has helped. He brings a new dynamic to All Saints!

  • Ralph Hahn

Also, “The Sopranos” lasted six seasons, but the last season was in two parts.

  • Markitos

Yay! great news I love this show and I love Edie Falco :D

  • John A

Yes great news. I kind of thought it would be axed so glad i was wrong.

  • Larry

I am very exited, will it be ten episodes again? I think this will be the last season though.

I like Nurse Jackie, but I LOVED United States of Tara. Tara was 10,000 times better and should have made it to six seasons.

Umm, doesn’t this show get like a 0.2 rating and less than 600K in viewers?

Yes and no. Live viewership ratings are sort of which you said, but DVR and ondemand and all those other platforms really catapult it!

I love this show! I’m happy it was renewed.

  • Matt

Nothing against Nurse Jackie and I have never watched it, but I wish United States of Tara would have gotten more time. It deserved it as well. Or at least a wrap up season like The Big C.

  • Bee

i haven’t done the math, but in terms of viewership, i think this season is rating higher than both seasons 3 and 4, and maybe, in the end, will have a higher season viewer average than season 2 also. that’s quite amazing.

i got into this show about a month and a half ago . i binged on it one week and cant get enough. i thought that airing it a week early on sho on demand and showtime anytime that it would be cancelled like bored to death on HBO. but i think it helped it against GOT.

I have never seen this show but my mom watches it and she always talks about how good it is! Maybe I’ll start watching it this summer.

Agreed with the Tara comment, but happy to have Jackie continue.

  • cindy

    didn’t Borgias have higher ratings?

  • KevinY

Nice! This season has been amazing (just like every season). The loss of Eve Best (Dr. O’Hara) has been made up for by the addition of Betty Gilpin (Dr. Roman), she’s gorgeous and hysterical.

I love Nurse Jackie & quite pleased to see it’ll be back for a 6th season. Interesting turn that Jackies oldest daughter is going down the same path & turning to drugs. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.
