Has a soap opera ever been cancelled, and does rating matters for them

  • Derrick

Ouch and Serious OUCH for DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hopefully that and other soaps will increase from last week!

  • PatF

Didn’t see the Days “tumble” coming…

I guess we can hope for a rebound next week!

  • tj

Yes, plenty of soaps have been “killed off” the latest were Another World,As the world turns, Guiding Light, All my Children, and One Life To Live. All not the latest but most memorable to me. I know AMC and OLTL are back but it’s not the same, I tried. Ratings matter, but for daytime it’s really about money now and what they can produce cheaply and still turn into a profit.

  • Jack Bauer

It’s a shame that DAYS OF OUR LIVES won Best Daytime Drama at the Daytime Emmy Awards last Sunday night over Y&R, B&B and GH.

  • robert sprague

gh will keep losing till it uses its vets. I know I don’t care to watch when there not on.

  • lampshade

Basically DOOL lost the audience gained over the last two weeks of May sweeps. Preemptions do have an impact especially with newer viewers because for them continuity may be lost. But I do think that prohecies saying DOOL willhit 3 million was very premature. Nevertheless all soaps lost ground, I hope they recover next week.

  • Mike

From the reels that were submitted Days deserved its win. That is what people forget about the Emmys — they are not judged on a whole year and any show can put together a reel. Days did a good job putting theirs together.

And yes OUCH is the best word. Soap ratings go up and down thus why I urged people last week to stop with all the big predictions they make.

Some of us soap viewers love to boast, but even with all the boasting that we do sometimes things just don’t play out like we want them to or think they will.

And yes these ratings do matter. If we never knew it before the Prospect Park project with AMC and OLTL has proven that. Even they have showed us that same day viewing is still where the money is even with online viewing.

  • Bex

I wonder if DOOL was affected by the preemption. They were having such a great run, and now with a long overdue Emmy under their belts, I hope things will pick up for them.

Congrats to DAYS OF OUR LIVES on their 2013 emmy win for best dramatic series award. And if the writing and storylines keep going the way they are now… it’s certain to be in the front of the line to win back to back emmys. Congrats to Chandler Massey on his back to back emmy win. The show is on fire right now!

  • sedgrick

those preemptions really hurted Days you can really see it was gaining audience

  • moshane58

Don’t watch Days but have to say there has been alot of rave reveiws on it.We all would like the one we watch win but remember we never know how good the others are.Congrats to Days on your Emmy.Online soaps are getting high ratings but it isn’t the veiwing thats the problem why they went down to two a week. Its a union dispute over how the pay is so low and believe PP is spending and making more then they are saying. So as of now they are down until its settled.Plus breach of contract with FX Canada has caused more problems. They have been on top weekly. What a mess. Now new writers.Wish PP would pull it together.Hopefully everything is worked out and back to taping to get more shows a week before they run out of episodes in September.

GH is in such a pathetic, sad state. FIRE CARTINI already. They are ruining the whole show (pauses to wait for the Cartini fans to defend RC’s wonderful “vision”). Y&R dropping that much is frightening. Before long it will be in the 2.0’s and that’s terrible. Fire JFP.

Days deserved its Emmy and fans should tune in regularly because its great.

  • diana

Not surprised, GH has been terrible, I finally just quit watching altogether. Such a shame after the beautiful 50th anniversary tributes, now the vets are pushed aside again. DAYS I gave up on months ago, the DAYSaster was one of the last few epis I saw, and that WAS good. But killing off Jack Deveraux (again!), putting Lucas on the backburner, and, yes, I loved Chad&Melanie, so when she left there was nothing “left” for me. The one soap I AM enjoying is OLTL. Today’s episode ROCKED!

  • 4hourglass

Congrats to DAYS for the emmy! Maybe NBC will rethink the tennis crap.
I think the numbers will rebound for DOOL. The show is as exciting as ever.
It’s like sweeps has not ended!

Maybe the emmys would be better if every soap catigory had just one person
from every soap. That would truly honor the medium!

Now, Y&R, which stands for THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS (sorry Mike and
all the ohers I’ve offended), should be happy for Doug Davidson, but mortified
by Corbin Bernsin. Wash his mouth out with soap (not the kind we watch)!

I hope he regrets the choice words. I know I regret mine.

  • Dee

I am thrilled for Doug Davidson’s win. So deserved!

As has already been pointed out, “Days” was gaining viewers each day during the week. If the soap had not been pre-empted on Thursday and Friday, the decline may not have looked so bad. Pre-emptions are always a crap shoot. It dinged “Days” last week, but the week before (week of Memorial Day), the Monday pre-emption did not have any ill effects.

It looks like B&B and Y&R bounced around all week. Up, then down, down again, then up. I guess CBS can take comfort in the fact that both soaps had their best days on Friday, which could carry over into this week. Compare that to GH, which lost viewers each day throughout the week. That may not bode well for the ratings for this week.

  • Mike

The pre-emptions probably wouldn’t have mattered for Days this week.

Here are the dailies for last week:

    Tuesday: 2.2/2,992,000
    Wednesday: 2.2/2,944,000
    Thursday: 2.0/2,576,000
    Friday: 2.0/2,797,000

Thursday and Friday were Days lowest days of the week anyway. Days was down almost 400,000 viewers each day from week to week when you compare Tuesday & Wednesday.

And last year for the same week they were actually up with the tennis preemptions. The tennis weeks are always hit and miss for Days. One year they go up those weeks and the next one they go down. I don’t think this year it would have mattered. Even the days it did air were still way down.

  • JayTN

Correction to my previous post…GH lost audience from Tuesday thru Friday, not each day as Tuesday did increase from Monday. However, while B&B, “Days”, and Y&R all ended their week with their best ratings of the week, GH still ended the week with their worst day.

  • PatF

Dee…Y and R is actually UP over last year, and lost the least amount of viewers over last week with the exception of B and B. You don’t have to worry at all about it being cancelled.

We’d lose the bottom two shows first.
