I am so happy for Days win…I missed them when they were preempted for two days and it did affect the ratings..They will be back….

We can lose any soap at any time. There are many variables involved.

  • LynTex

Soaps are a staple of sorts; around many years so s/ls are repeated ad nauseum. (ie., WTD and infidelity!!!) And too often women are portrayed as weak and brainless in need of a man to save them (or unable to resist them). Most of the younger generation see themselves differently and arenot entertained by these very basic s/ls. Can’t some of these characters evolve? (Note Y&R has less than 250K out of over 4M of its viewers, in the 18-34 demo; less than 25% are in 18-49 demo!).

This genre is what it is. Those that enjoy, do. But no soap is gaining and maintaining new audiences. Viewers watch for favs; tune out if s/ls for favs aren’t whats hoped for. Thus the weekly swings.

Sorry don’t intend this to be negative; just reality.

I’m new to the ratings game. But, as a mom, I can tell you that about half the schools in the U.S. begin their summer break right before Memorial Day. And the other half get out mid-June. What happens during summer break? The kids invade the house and regular daytime soap viewing goes out the window. From now until mid-August, my soap viewing will happen in the evening, via DVR, & probably delayed on weekends

  • Mike

    @Kansas Guest

And it used to be the complete opposite.

Used to soaps soared during the summer especially in the 1980’s and forward. Although it did start esp. with college age kids in the 1970s with All My Children first off.

But now the soaps don’t appeal to the teens like it once did. And the summers do tend to see lower ratings for the soaps.

The shows continue to try to appeal to that audience with teen stories in the summer, but it has been a long time for me that any teen storyline on any of the soaps has hooked me at all or even entertained me. A great deal of it to me is that the teen actors they tend to hire now just have looks but no acting chops or charisma.

Of course…but when everything that’s replaced soaps (especially ABC’s failures) can’t pull in ratings, the networks are pretty much now on notice.

Unless the shows consistently fall below the 1.7 level, I don’t see them replacing any…unless they just can’t turn a profit.

  • Eddie

If you will notice DAYS was “pre-empted” so it doesn’t really tell the real story.

  • Mike

Pre-empted or not let’s be realistic folks even to break even with last week Days would have had to get at least 3.1 million viewers on Thursday and Friday and over to risen for the week.

Even on it’s best weeks when is the last time Days has done that 2 days in row much less on a Thursday and Friday.

I don’t know what the big surprise is. Look at the numbers I posted from last week. Days lost almost 400,000 viewers from Wednesday to Thursday last week — that’s just one day. They went from 2,944,000 to 2,576,000

Then on Friday they had 2,797,000 but dropped on Monday to 2,249,000. So that is over 500,000 lost over the weekend.

It’s just the up and down nature of soap ratings. And it is mostly either male viewers, older women or young girls as their 18-49 and 18-34 aren’t changing much.

  • JayTN

PatF…I believe that CBS has been fairly successful with their soap replacements, “The Talk” (which replaced “As the World Turns”) and “Let’s Make a Deal” (which replaced “Guiding Light”). Without knowing what either series does on a regular, weekly basis, I think that both shows are doing just as well – or better – than ATWT and GL. Both of those P&G produced soaps were probably the soaps with the oldest audiences.

Of course CBS programs more daytime hours than ABC (4.5 hours vs. 3 hours), and they have a pretty good selection of shows (game shows, talk shows, soaps) while ABC really doesn’t. CBS also seems to have faith in its daytime shows (it has had the same daytime schedule for three straight seasons now) compared to ABC, which has given back 90 minutes to its affiliates over the past decade (the 60 minutes for “Katie” and 30 minutes after “Port Charles” was axed). While CBS would quickly cancel a daytime show if it wasn’t profitable, the network just seems more invested in daytime than either ABC or NBC.

I am still confused how Days of Our Lives won best writing at the emmy’s, the other soaps must have really wrote some crap to get down to Days level for writing.

  • Derrick

Timothy, if you’re talking about last year then I was stunned too. But DAYS won Best Drama this year and Chandler Massey for Younger Actor, that’s all DAYS won this year and including the Creative Arts Emmys!

  • PatF

BB won the writing Emmy this year. And directing.

  • PatF

Jay, I may be going out on MY limb here, but I think Y and R is still the corner stone of their entire Daytime lineup. Unless the ratings REALLY tank, and they’ve been pretty stable for about three years now, even under MAB, I don’t think that will happen.

The Talk is doing better, but LMAD is their weak link right now. If anything goes, that’ll be it.

  • Dee

I hope Y&R doesn’t keep free falling. I really don’t. I forsee more wins for DOOL next year. its firing on all cylinders. It is the little soap that could.

  • Walsh

I am really happy about Days recent wins in the daytime Emmy awards! Congrats to all staff and crews. You all deserve, thanks thanks to believe in the show and NBC should notice by advertising more its only soap. Days is the most modern soaps of 2010’s because of its gay/baby storyline stories ; a first male rape storyline ; kids having front storylines stories ( wow…this one was really clever having Parker, Ciara and Johnny into some major storylines); major veterans having deep connection into their past stories ; characters and past adventures ; over the top hot female dialogues that makes us laugh loud, arc-stories that goes only 3-4 days a month with action -packed all connected characters during that day ( it’s a clever move for budget expenses…), the soundtrack beginning to blossom and now it’s maybe time to make Days the first soap in history on a primetime schedule!! NBC should think about it, especially when you have prime time shows with 10 times the budget cost for days for a single episode doing exacly the same numbers in primetime…

  • Jeff

has anyone seen the ratings for the emmy awards? Curious how much of a stinkbomb it was in the ratings, given how much of a stinkbomb the actual show was itself.
