REVEREND AL SHARPTON AND MSNBC ARE ‘ADVANCING THE DREAM’ THIS SUMMER

Kicks off at the Essence Festival and Concludes with a Star-Studded Event at the Historic Apollo Theater

NEW YORK – July 3, 2013 – 50 years ago during the March on Washington, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King stood up to proclaim, “I Have A Dream.”  This summer, Reverend Al Sharpton and MSNBC will be honoring and celebrating that historic moment by ‘Advancing the Dream’.

‘Advancing the Dream’ is a multi-platform initiative to honor the spirit of the March throughout the summer. Reverend Sharpton and “PoliticsNation” will highlight civil rights issues of the past and present and will tell the stories of the people and the personalities behind the Movement.

The initiative is being launched at the Essence Festival July 4-7, will be continued in Washington DC for the anniversary of the March with a special “PoliticsNation” on August 23, and will conclude with a star studded event from the Apollo Theater on September 6 focused on the next 50 years of the civil rights movement.  Event details to follow in August.

As part of ‘Advancing the Dream’, Reverend Sharpton will also recognize efforts in communities across America to expand fairness, equality opportunity.

On "PoliticsNation”, Reverend Sharpton will be asking viewers to share stories of how they or members of their communities are working to ‘Advance the Dream’.  With today’s struggles for equality impacting people of color, women, the LGBT community and more, the show will be celebrating those who are working to expand fairness and equality.  These stories will be shared on “PoliticsNation” as well as the website and Facebook pages.

MSNBC will host a unique fan experience from the Essence Festival that will allow festival goers to join in efforts to strengthen and empower our communities.  MSNBC talent including Reverend Al Sharpton, Chris Matthews, Chris Hayes, Ed Schultz, Melissa Harris-Perry, Alex Wagner, Tamron Hall, Joy-Ann Reid, Toure, and Mara Schiavocampo will participate in several ESSENCE Empowerment Experience daytime panels, book signings and meet and greets throughout the weekend.
