via press release:

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif - July 9, 2013 - Jenna Elfman has been cast in the upcoming NBC comedy "Growing Up Fisher."

Elfman will play the role of Joyce Fisher, the wife of Mel Fisher (J.K. Simmons) - the proud family patriarch who does not let his blindness affect him as a father, husband and breadwinner.

Elfman recently appeared on NBC's "1600 Penn" and is best known for her role on "Dharma and Greg," for which she garnered a Golden Globe Award, three Emmy Award nominations.

"Growing Up Fisher" (formerly known as "The Family Guide") is from Universal Television and Aggregate Films. It is executive produced by DJ Nash, Jim Garavente and Jason Bateman, who also serves as narrator.

The series will premiere in midseason for NBC.

  • TV Addict

Then it will be canceled. The end

Courting Alex, Accidentally on Purpose, 1600 Penn…

  • mike

Love her, dont know about the show.

  • The End

Likely has put pen to paper. Thus the press release.

  • Igwell

    Next stop: FOX.

  • NeNe Leakes

New Normal was cancelled but Hollywood continues to employ this bitch? Bloop!

  • Austin

She’s like a killer of shows, but an amazing actress.

  • Flame

1600 Penn worked out real great.

  • HV

I feel bad for her. She’s a good actress (I saw her in 1600 Penn, which I actually very much liked), but I will not be watching this show.

  • Dan

Another 1 and done for Jenna Elfman, 1 season wonders

    Courting Alex
    Accidentally on Purpose
    1600 Penn
    Growing Up Fisher

Here’s an idea, try an ABC or FOX comedy. Midseason NBC comedies almost never work (Parks and Office were the only recent examples) and CBS usually dumps their sitcoms after a season.

  • Dan

    Besides Jenna Elfman,

Tyler Labine, Joanna Garcia Swisher, David Walton, Jeffery Tambor, and Kyle Bornheimer have been recent examples of One and Doners.

They should all star in a show together.

  • r0ckmypants

Glad they changed the title. Sad the new title sucks.

  • Dan

@Flop Detector – What kind of puns can you make with Jenna Elfman’s previous failures?

  • Rebecca

It’s on my list for midseason, to check out. Still had it under its old title. I like her, and I loved 1600 Penn. I like JK Simmons, too.

I like @Dan’s idea….put all those actors in a show together. I’d watch that one. Except David Walton has About A Boy coming to NBC mid-season (I plan to watch; he’ll be good in it. He was good with the little girl in Bent and he’ll be good with the boy in this new one), airing just before Growing Up Fisher most likely (they’re both for mid-season, one airing right after the other according to old notes I have, on Tuesdays).

  • Rebecca

Plus, I think the little boy in About a Boy was the young son in 1600 Penn IIRC.

  • Dan

@Rebecca – Yeah the boy Benjamin Stockham was in Sons of Tucson, and in 1600 Penn and if his new show gets cancelled he can go for a One and done Hatrick. Though I was surprised how quickly he got the About a Boy gig from 1600 Penn. Second Position casting came in handy.

  • Ravenrei

The only show I’ve ever been able to like her on was Dharma & Greg. Maybe she just got programmed in my head one way and she’s stuck now. *shrugs*

Unless they really click, I think I’m gonna have a hard time believing her and JK Simmons as a couple. I do like the concept, though.

  • Andrew

I smell NBC Summer burn off. I have a feeling this will take Save Me’s slot next year.
