via press release:

LOS ANGELES, July 15, 2013 – , it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. New episodes of the series will debut in summer 2014, with executive producer Brian Buckner returning as showrunner.

“TRUE BLOOD remains a signature show for HBO, and a true phenomenon with our viewers,” noted Lombardo. “Thanks to Brian Buckner and his talented team, the show continues to be a thrill ride like nothing else on TV.”

Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, the show takes place in a world where vampires and humans co-exist, after vampires have come out of the coffin, thanks to the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood that means they no longer need humans as a nutritional source. The series follows waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts, vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and vampire Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård). Alan Ball (creator of the Emmy®-winning HBO series “Six Feet Under”) created the show, which is based on the bestselling Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.

The sixth season of TRUE BLOOD, which launched June 26, has inspired critical raves, with the Boston Herald praising the show for “suspense, surprises and crackling dialogue,” while US Weekly noted that the show’s “cheeky humor and vivid imagination are still there to relish,” and the New York Post called it “bloody hilarious.” According to early data, the show is already exceeding ten million viewers per episode.

I’d say either this, or maybe Season 8, will be the last. The show has clearly lost its luster. And I can’t be glamored into saying otherwise.

  • Rex

Best show on TV. Better than The Wire.

  • Rex

Clearly I am suffering from dissociative identity disorder. Don’t mind me.

  • Rex

Must be the same troll as before.

  • Confusion

Great news! I guess since the press release calls it one of their signature shows they don’t intend on the 7th season being the last?

  • Jack Bauer

    Two words: FINAL SEASON

  • Samuel

If they’re still making lots of money on it, I’m pretty sure it’s never going away. It’s been bad for a long time anyway, what’s a few more seasons.

  • Dan

I still love True Blood and am so glad it was renewed for a seventh season! I don’t care what people say, I still think the show is great and it remains one show I truly hating waiting a week before a new episode airs!

  • HereToSortYourLifeOut

Once upon a time HBO gave us The Wire, Six Feet Under, and The Sopranos…

    Vampires and that Thrones rubbish.

  • Shoes

I dont think game of thrones is rubbish. It is one of the most critically lauded shows of all time and social media center. Although true blood is bad, it still remains campy fun. Glad to here about the renewal

  • steven

I’d rather that the HBO execs check with Larry David about a new season of Curb. It’s been 2 years, and most shows don’t take that long to get renewed.

  • DW

as someone who would dump on the show with out seeing it and binged on it over memorial day weekend and loving the show now , im happy.

  • davie

Ten or back to Twelve episodes I wonder

  • Zee King

please give me 12 episodes next year!

  • Brandojames

Unless the show absolutely tanks next year. I think it has a few more seasons under its belt. Creatively I think it should be over just because its a huge cluster now. But Ms. Harris got what, like 13 books out of the series? There’s plenty more material just to cluster

  • simsalabim

HBO, please bring us a gritty gangster and/or cop drama next. All this supernatural and fantasy crap everywhere. Enough is enough!

  • toons

please someone call the police… 911… apparently some people have guns aimed at their heads and are forced to watch true blood…

  • John

It will be a 12 episode season, the 10 ep format was for Paquin’s pregnancy, that’s all

  • r0ckmypants

@Shoes – “It is one of the most critically lauded shows of all time.”

    That’s a pretty heinous overstatement.

  • serendipity’s last stand
