Folks everyone likes what they like. I wouldn’t watch Days again for any amount of money and the same with GH, but I am glad their fans are enjoying them. But I am not going to put them down just to try and make my show look better.

As to Tracy Bregman, I am glad she is on contract too, but she could have been on contract long before now. She chose not too. They wanted her on contract as far back as the last Sheila story where she was Sheila. She didn’t want to be tied down to the show while her children were young.

As to Melody Thomas, Phelps has not been the first to cut her time back and if Phelps wants her gone Phelps won’t be the first with that either. They have been trying to get rid of her every contract cycle of late. Every time it comes up for renewal Thomas-Scott begs her fans to write in to save her. So that is nothing new either.

As to Steve Burton and the episode counts.

June — Elizabeth Hendrickson had the most eppys. Followed by Billy Miller & Greg Rikaart (Steve Burton was 4th)

May – Chritian LeBlanc followed by Michael Muhney & Marco Dapper (Steve Burton was 8th)

April – It was Steve Burton but he was tied with Jessica Collins and Joshua Morrow for 1st. And they only had 1 more episode than the next 2 and only 5 more than #10.

March – It was Eric Braedan who led followed by Joshua Morrow & Tracey Bregman. Steve Burton was 4th tied with Jessica Collins, Chris LeBlanc & Melody Thomas Scott

Feb – It was Steve Burton, Sharon Case & Joshua Morrow at 1 all with 13 episodes. That was only 3 more episodes than the person at #10. That was the month he debuted.

He is listed at #6 for the year with 64 episodes out of 125 episodes.

Melody has 39 episodes for the year which is low but Doug Davidson has less than her and so does Judith Chapman and Jess Walton. Judith Chapman who used to be in almost every episode has only been in 7 episodes all year.

That’s a LOT of airtime for a brand new character with no ties to anyone.

  • Mike

But it was said that he had been at the top of the episode counts every month since he debuted but he hasn’t.

No one complains at all about Redaric Williams as Tyler but he has been in 62 episodes just 2 less than Burton. He joined in December where Burton joined in Feb. He has not much more ties to anyone on the show. But everyone mentions Burton but not him.

@Jay . I think there is a nicer way to update a show without doing a house cleaning. Frankly her way of casting seems impulsive, childish and mean. You can bring in younger viewers without butchering a show into some generic garbage. I watched for 20 years and stopped liking it immediately and stopped watching when she began. A huge loss! I hope the rumors are true and they kick her to the curb. Frankly a shake up seems far less desperate than her management style.

I don’t get why people want to put all the blame on ONE person when a show is not going well.

Just like someone saying Josh is not at fault in any of this. The writer has just as much to do with how often someone is seen as the producer does. The producer does not write the scenes. They are in charge of hiring and firing and the look of the show. He is just as much at fault for who is on all the time. If the writer had no control over any of that at all then the writing would be all over the place because he is having to use someone he doesn’t want to use. And just making up stuff for them to be on.

It is just like people for years have blamed Brian Frons for everything wrong with ABC soaps. Well Brian Frons is not even there anymore and much of what he was accused of is still going on at GH. The writers and producers shared much of the blame.

Brian Frons is said to have been the one who dictated many of the casting changes that happened during Phelps first few years, but that is one thing they overlook with Frons and blame Phelps for. When she was basically following orders from above. I’m sure Phelps didn’t mind doing it but again it wasn’t all her doing.

And once again in many ways Phelps is doing the same at Y&R since CBS hired her to make the show cheaper. And I wouldn’t be afraid to be Sony isn’t wanting to make it cheaper too. Look at the cuts they have made at Days and continue to make.

The networks are all about cheaper right now. Even with B&B being up this last year in the ratings, CBS still cut their budget.

As to the cuts in cast that Phelps has made. I have not had any problem with any of the cuts she made. I hated most of the characters they played from Tucker to Genevieve. They were part of the problems with Y&R for the last year. They needed to go. Most were even hollering for them to go but now criticize Phelps for getting rid of them.

Others like Miller and Graziadei were going anyway. And Stafford chose to leave too.

I would like to start the rumor that RC & FV have been fired from GH. And with them goes all their newbies and their 3 pets.

Mike…I agree that most of the casting changes Jill Farren Phelps has made at Y&R, I support. For the most part, the characters that were dropped really didn’t add anything to the show (and she inherited almost all of these useless characters from axed predecessor Maria Arena Bell).

The character of Tucker – played by Stephen Nichols – was never really utilized, despite being revealed to be Katherine Chancellor’s son. I believe that Tucker was introduced to try and fill the big-bad-businessman void left when Eric Braeden (Victor) left the soap. When Braeden – and Victor – returned a few months later, Tucker wasn’t really left with anything to do.

I don’t really recall the reasons behind the introduction of Genie Francis’ Genevieve character, but it seemed to me that producers (Maria Arena Bell) were more interested in saying “look at us, we’ve got soap legend Genie Francis on our soap” than really crafting an interesting character for her to play. It was almost like they hired Francis and then created a character for her, when it should have been the other way around.

I don’t think YR is doing bad ratings wise, or storytelling wise.

I just don’t like Phelps and her choices. Be careful not to put words in people’s mouths/posts.

I’ve outlasted LML, MAB, and I’m sure I’ll still be watching when Phelps is gone too.

The show is too iconic and its vet cast is what has always held it together.

The ratings for last week aren’t posted here yet, but YR was way up over both last year and last week. Most shows did well…so congrats!

So Days has the smallest budget of all the soaps. They do not get to rehearse scenes. They film one and a half episodes a day. WOOOW. That should tell you something about the calibre of these actors. I watch a scene and can truly say that that character would have definitely have said that or reacted to that situation the same way. It is as if they do not need writers. Like they are improvising. They all are extraordinary actors. But of course they do have writers, and they just make it seem so natural. I am one of the few that like EJ and Sammi; Daniel and Jennifer, there is definitely chemistry there, you can feel it.
What Y&R tried with Gennie Francis, GH is hoping to do with Peter Reckell. Signing someone with his stature and success, to lure fans of his from Days to start watching GH. It worked for OLTL when 2 characters from Another World went to OLTL. But, it did not work for Y&R with Gennie. As big of a fan that I am of Peter’s, I’ll stay with Days. Those kind of tactics do not work anymore. Eileen Davidson did not raise Days rating from her move, what did work for Days was the storytelling and the characters. Her character was always a trouble maker and bringing that character back helped. Days is faced, Days does not linger with characters for longer than 7 minutes; it moves on and then comes back to them. It usually involves more than 2 characters involved in every scene. There is not one character or situation that I fast forward or just ignore. Every storyline is interesting and is critical to another. So, Stefano with have his revenge. Personally I think he has EJ’s takeover planned all along.
Can not wait to see what happens next.
