I didn’t say LML and MAB didn’t introduce new characters.

I said they maintained the existing cast. Different.

  • Bizzarr1000

Disney the shows a do better if they’re on in the morning befor the othere soaps come on

Of the major existing cast who has Phelps got rid of that really makes a difference.

Phyllis is the only major character. And with that Phelps is equal with Latham who got rid of Victoria Rowell and also with MAB who got rid of Jess Walton and briefly under her watch even lost Eric Braedan thus why she created Tucker.

Latham also got rid of John Abbott. It was under her watch that he died. She got rid of Mackenzie. Those were just in the first year she was there.

Bell during her tenure got rid of Brad and Colleen very early on. Killed off Liz Foster.

Also in her first year she recast many of the younger players including aging Noah and Abby.

And she brought back Ashley which I loved. And brought in Billy Miller as Billy — both of those in the first few months.

And MAB is the one who in the first few months brought Adam to town and he was on almost everyday. He was her pet. He took over the show.

Phelps has done nothing different to the face of the show as far as cast as Latham and Bell did, but she gets flack for it. I don’t like Phelps anymore than the next person but often people just criticize her for the sake of being able to.

It is the same as the GH fans who criticize her for the same stuff that they let Cartini by with.

Wow just saw this Tweet from soap reporter Michael Logan:

    Michael Logan ?@TVGMLogan22 Jul

Okay, I just watched 2day’s #RogerHowarth DoubleMintTwin shiz on @GeneralHospital WTF? I want my time back. #GH50

He has been one of Frank V. and Ron C.’s biggest apologist and boosters. Have to wonder what they think of that Tweet.

  • jonboyelk

Gotta love Jack Wagner for speaking his mind. The guy is right. My index finger cramped from all the use I gave my fast forward button yesterday. Molly, Rafe, RJ and Taylor flew right by and I was done watching in less than 20 minutes.

  • Joe S

@jonboy well i am not surprised there is more of the teen set (i.e. molly, rafe, TH, and Taylor. It is the summer time which is when soaps tend to give the teens more story time.

Howarth did a good job in the dual role but the story just isn’t believeable. The fact that Cartini refuse to listen to all the complaints that the show is what has become and people are not happy is a problem. Sadly ABC will sit back and do nothing until the numbers drop to a horrible level.

I am so grateful to the Days witers to give Judi Evans a truly front storyline story in years. It’s amazing to see her with the veterans and Alison Sweeney. She’ s a talented actress and it’s amazing to see her character having scenes with Sami, Marlena. I think days is writing now for its long time fans who do know how fantastic it is to see Kayla, Adrienne, Justin, Sami, Lucas, Nicole, Jennifer, Kristen and Hope sharing scenes together. Which tv shows can you really exacly see all these characters all grown up and see their physical and psychological transformation in front of our screens.. I d’ont really remind to see that in daytime in years. They should add Carrie’s character just to make the chery on the sundea.
Take you writers to finally understand why longtime viewers love their shows so much

  • Walsh

I would like also to respond for viewers who did not like the show’s direction apparently. Days has always been an action/adventure show since about 1983. The supercouples formulas were at the peak with General Hospital making the headlines and primetime soaps with lavish sets and actually ten times the budget that Days has right now. It makes sense to me ‘reality wise’ that this formula is gone for now due lack of liquidity. An action/adventure plot cost money and if they don’t do it great, it just shows on the screen. So they turn back on the storytelling days in the 70’s with less bombs, cars, and excitment with better dialogues, deeper character, sense of history, connection and central storylines that reflects on all characters on the show…even Ciara at 7 years old!!! It’s genius, not as glittering as an evil possession but it does the job ! This is actually what a soap need to be in 2010 because movies and primetime tv shows are really superficial right now!!! Soaps are maybe turning back to their roots and are more profound..so some maybe not everyone like the new era but I actually like it. Supercouples are boring and tend to make the shows stuck in ice because ou cannot do anything with the characters once they found their “true love”. It was nice in the 80’s, 90’s but today single developing character story tend to be more exciting and modern than couples formulas…

  • Chrisann D

I know I am in the minority…but I am really enjoying GH and the direction the show is going. I love seeing Roger H as Franco. I think he is an amazing talent. I would love to see all the soaps soar in the ratings so here’s hoping….

  • Dee

Sorry Chrisann D but when even Michael Logan is complaining, you know its bad. I think they need to shoot GH and put it out of its misery once and for all. Let the actually talented actors go onto something better and the Michael Easton types collect money on the street corner. That may be mean but its also mean and wrong for RC/FV to come in and destroy a show completely. Guza was no genius but when 98% of the audience is begging for him back, well, that’s just sad! No, its pathetic!

  • Dee

How low will GH’s ratings go after this week’s debacle? Can you say 1.6 or lower?!

  • Joe S

@Dee sadly I think the numbers will be better than the previous week which will send the wrong message to the writers(although honestly I don’t think they care one way or the other!)

Guza coming back is not the answer either. Then the show would go back to be the Sonny Corinthos hour. That was hurting ratings also.

Like I said I don’t see ABC doing anything until the numbers hit rock bottom

  • robert sprague

loved seeing denise alexander on gh Thursday and Friday if only they would use her more I don’t know all us fans conplain all the time but nothing seems to change same old crap over and over sonny and mob britt and Patrick tj felix Sabrina sean franco silas all we don’t wont to see, but frank and ron just don’t get it; more luke laura lucy heather leslsy mickeal

  • JayTN

Mike…I agree that I cannot really fault Jill Farren Phelps for anything she has done thus far. That doesn’t mean that I agree with all of her decisions, but as a whole, I believe, Y&R is better under her leadership than those of her immediate predecessors.

It was mentioned that GH producer Frank Valentini said he was taught to listen to the fans by legendary producer Paul Rauch. However, that can be a double edged sword. Just look at GH. Some people – like Chrisann D – like the current storylines. Others don’t. So, who do you listen to? The fan who likes it, or the fan who hates it. Ultimately, a producer has to do what he or she thinks is best for the show. The fans’ comments can and should play a role in the decisions, but no producer should just blindly follow the whims of an often fickle fan base. Another good example is B&B. About the only time I ever see a comment on this board about B&B, it is to complain about the never ending triangles that the show seems to employ, yet B&B is one of the most consistent soaps on the air. Even when it loses a number of heavy hitters, it keeps chugging along. So, either the fans who hate the triangles represent a very vocal minority or these people are watching a soap that they hate.

  • Mike

The only thing that I have noticed with B&B is that their 18-34 female audience which at one time was growing has dropped off significantly. I don’t know if they are bored with the younger characters or what the answer is there.

I have never done the statistics but I would imagine that a large portion of their audience is men and those over 49.

I know that someone on Soap Opera Network did them for Days a few weeks ago and said that only 1/5th of Days audience was in the 18-49 ratio. I would think that B&B’s might be even lower than that.

  • Mike

Oh and Jay TN I agree with you about not agreeing with everyone of Phelp’s decisions. But I’m onry that way I guess even with folks I like I don’t agree with everything they do. LOL

Many keep talking about her interfering with the Y&R sound and look and she has. But she is not the first.

I remember when Latham came in she took away much of the look at first. For instance those long opening shots on flowers or furniture that characterized the direction of Y&R for years was done away with. Latham even at one time got rid of the flowers if I remember correctly.

  • Mike

Oh wow I am very disappointed. Was reading the Directors and Writers Thread on Soap Opera Network.

Kay Alden has been fired for budget reasons from B&B. I have enjoyed B&B more since she joined the staff than I have ever have. I am so shocked by this. Ratings have been doing fairly well. I am just shocked.

I just wonder if it was a Brad Bell decision or another CBS decision since they cut the budget last. That has been awhile you wouldn’t think they would have more budget issues this soon.

This was evidently the writer that was alluded to as being fired a month or so ago.

I could almost get behind it if CBS wanted her back at Y&R. Her tenure there was the last time I enjoyed everything about Y&R. But I just don’t see that happening.

  • jonboyelk

And GH was a snoozefest again yesterday. Tell me, is there anyone who from the moment Danny needed a bone marrow transplant didn’t know it would turn out to be Franco who was the match? They are trying sooooooooo hard to redeem this evil character just for the sake of keeping Howarth around. I enjoyed him as Todd but, quite obviously, he has limited acting talent because no matter what character he plays its the same thing. Same can be said of the other two in the Big Three. I’m so disappointed in this show. Hard to believe I was loving it only a few short months ago.

  • Joe S

I am not sure what is the obsession with Roger Howarth. Even from watching the OLTL episodes on OWN, the show is far too focused on him as Todd. Then you turn to GH and the show is all focused on him as Franco. I am not saying he isn’t a good actor but I just don’t get both shows obsession with Howarth
