ABC Family has finally officially confirmed that its low rated quirky dramedy Bunheads has been canceled after one season (which was split into two halves.)

Though the network waited until today to make the news official, both viewers and the show's producers have long suspected that the show was finished. The network did not order additional episodes after the first season concluded. ABC Family's new series The Fosters is significantly outperforming Bunheads performance last summer, which may sealed Bunheads' fate.

"Bunheads is a wonderful series that we are very proud to have aired. The series had amazing storytelling, the most talented cast and a passionate and loyal fan base. Recognizing all of this, we took extra time to try and find ways to bring the series back for another season, but in the end it simply wasn’t possible.  We wish the cast and crew the best in their future endeavors," stated an ABC Family spokesperson.

That BS. I thought it was a great show. Well written and acted.
As a guy I reluctantly watched it with my wife but got pulled in
    Too bad

  • NBC is awesome

I like this show it was really cute but it looked like it was gonna get canceled a long time ago.

After The Lying Game was canceled this was a no brainer.

  • John A

Finally. I would have been a bit annoyed if it got renewed with TLG cancelled too.

Bunheads was clearly the best show on television that no one watched. I can’t argue with the decision though. Bunheads needed to increase its target audience by at least one third and I cannot imagine how it would have attracted that many new viewers. I am, however, still miffed over ABCF dragging out the seemingly inevitable cancellation for so long.

    Bunheads, you will be missed.

I am in love with The Fosters but Bunheads was a quality show which should be on tv somewhere. It’s a shame that there is no network which would pick it up but I guess that ratings – rather than quality – is what counts. Sad.

good, that show was AWFUL :)

Sad.. but saw it coming. It will be missed. ASP is awesome she will be back im sure. ABCFamily really sucks now. Just like the CW. Really sad cause ive always liked this network.. but they are just as bad as the CW. 2 networks not worth watching anymore.

Really sad but I saw this coming as The Fosters and Twisted have better ratings and ABC Family decided to base the renewals of Bunheads and The Lying Game on the success of The Fosters and Twisted and the ratings for The Fosters and Twisted were better. Although I still think ABC Family would have found a way to renew Bunheads had Sutton Fosters got a best actress emmy nomination, I don’t think it’s a coincidence they cancel Bunheads just 2 business days after the Emmy nominations.

The only good news is that it’s now pretty much a sure thing The Fosters and Twisted will get a back order with more episodes. It’s really sad that ABC Family put these shows against Bunheads and The Lying Game because all 4 are good shows.

Well, as long as The Fosters doesn’t veer to the left too much, I will keep watching it but as I’ve said before, I felt good about letting my 11-year-old watch Bunheads but no way is she watching The Fosters.

So, ABC Family has lost this ‘family’ if and until they bring something more appropriate for tweens on the air.

We shall see if The Fosters does better than Bunheads in the ratings when they put it up against primetime broadcast networks in the winter. Bunheads did good last summer when there was virtually no competition. Let’s see how The Fosters does under the same conditions.

And there it is. It took them 5 months to make a decision that we all knew was coming

Billiam, with all due respect, just because YOU personally don’t let YOUR 11 year old watch The Fosters does not mean that every parent does the same. My sister is 10 and she watches The Fosters, and she’s not the only one of her friends to do so. She watches all of the ABC Family shows and been watching them for years. You can’t expect a television network to go by your standards of what you personally think is appropriate.

I am not surprised but I am sad…I loved the cast, writing, and especially all of the support actors from the Gilmore Girls who guest starred or had small parts on the show.

  • Tom

Billiam…The Fosters is one of the most family friendly shows on the network. Just because it features gay mothers doesn’t mean it’s any less appropriate then the other shows on the network.

  • Josh Emerson

I hope The Fosters gets a renewal soon. I am loving that show!

This cable network is clearing the deck that’s for sure. First ridding itself of Make It Or Break It, then Jane By Design, then The Lying Game and finally Bunheads. Like anywhere else a show must be up to speed in terms of ratings or out it goes and all those shows just mentioned never were ratings winners so to speak. Bunheads had its’ fair share of fans though and it is too bad ABC Family can’t extend their programming to five nights a week. Bunheads would have had another chance had that been the case.
