Guza killed off Alan and Emily Quartermaine. JF fired the great late Anna Lee. Guza also killed off another fan favorite Georgie Jones. Guza was worse than JF kiling off the Q’s but she did enough damage as well. At least Cartini seems to like the vets more than the mob.

  • Mike

No writer can hire or fire performers without the executive producer’s okay. A head writer and executive producer are just as guilty or innocent in the decision of a show. They both have to make decisions together. Guza had to run his stories and ideas by Phelps and she had to okay them.

And ultimately ABC had the final decision. Such as ABC was the one who put the end to the gay story at OLTL.

And Phelps and Guza are not any more guilty of stuff during Brian Frons reign at ABC than Julie Caruthers, Frank Valentini, Ron C., McTavish, Charles Pratt, and all the other writers and producers of the ABC soaps under Frons.

Frons wanted Anna Lee out and he wanted Genie Francis out. Phelps did as she was told. But I also am sure that Phelps didn’t mind doing it. But it wasn’t all on her.

Fans like to strike blame on one person but ultimately the decisions on these soaps often are made by many. The idea may originate with one of them but the others go along with it.

Mike, you talk a lot of smack? Do you have inside knowledge or is this all just theory and speculation?

  • Mike

It comes from visiting the soap opera boards for years. And from reading the magazines for years.

  • Deidra

So your views are based on opinion just like mine and others on this site. IMHO a writer has control over how they write the show. IMHO they would influence the EP regarding the direction of the show. IMHO they have some control over who is hired and fired. IMHO Guza seemed to think that four characters were the heart of the show Sonny,Carly,Jason and Sam. IMHO Frons went along with it because it fit his agenda to cancel all ABC soaps. IMHO the direction of the show under Guza and even Phelps can be shared with soap killer Brian Frons.

Just read Emma Samms is coming back for a visit to GH! I am really hoping that the rumors of Sean Donely coming back are true also. What I am hoping for is a big Sean/Robert/Anna/Holly/Luke/Laura showdown with Jerry Jacks and Faison, Robin is saved, she is reunited with Patrick, they go off together, and Sabrina can get an age appropriate relationship or be written off.

Maybe they can bring on Sean and Tiff’s kid too. Maybe a love interest for Felix or Sabrina?

Also, hoping Maxie and Spinelli get a happy ending, and they send them off together with their kid. Really hoping William DeVry’s character is a short-term. Just not a fan of his.

  • DaraKS

Fans by nature are sometimes thrilled wirh the progress of a show and sometimes disappointed. Sounding off at those who create the show are how satisfaction and dissatisfaction are made known. Also called feedback. Feedback, both negative and positive are part of life. Thanks for your feedback Deidra.

  • Mike

Jeff — One of the sites reported that DeVry signed a 3 or 4 year contract. But he could still not last that long.

    ******

Deidra — All I was trying to say is it is not always black and white. No one person is to blame in most cases.

Many times writers are not allowed to write what they want. Douglas Marland said himself he didn’t want to write the Luke and Laura story the way it was written. Gloria Monty wanted the rape forgotten and done away with. Marland didn’t. He had to do what Monty told him to do. He left. She got a writer who wrote what she wanted.

Until someone speaks out we can only guess at why some things play out the way they do.

Great news that Emma Samms is returning I am just not sure that this is the answer to the shows issues.

The bigger questions are how long is she staying for the long term or another one of her couple days to few week returns. Will they write her into a good regular story?

I bet she somehow will be involved in the Luke story but we shall see.

If the show still remains the Roger Howarth as Franco show then people may tune in to see Samms return but will tune out pretty quickly

  • Mike

    Joe S

If I knew that it was to finally fix some of the damage done to her character I might be tempted to tune in.

I almost was during the 50th in hopes that Frisco’s character might be fixed. But knowing from the Tweets and from reading the boards that Frisco’s character was only damaged further, I don’t feel the strong desire to tune in.

Holly was once one of my favorites on the show years ago. I have not enjoyed any of her previous returns although I did not see the last one.

  • PatF

GH seems to be doing what MAB did during her tenure at YR…bring a lot of big soap “names” on for short stints or as “stunt casting”. When old fan favs return it may provide a few new eyes to the show, but as we saw with YR…it did nothing for long term ratings growth at all. And when the cast gets bloated no one gets the air time or story focus that they deserve.

  • Joe S

@Mike the problem is when trying to fix certain characters, they usually wind up hurting them more, especially when they are not there for anything but a small stint.

Back in 2011 when Vanessa Marcil returned as Brenda I thought Guza totally ruined her character. I was hoping when she returned for the short stint during the 50th they would fix it. Instead they had her sleep with Sonny’s son Michael after he got drunk. Then she said it was lie but as she was on the plane leaving town it was revealed it wasn’t. It is just totally out of character for her to go and have a one night stand like that.

The Frisco character I don’t think any more damage was done. They had already made him out to be the father that abandoned his kids. He came back helped Maxie then left again so I just feel they made him into more of the same.

As for Emma Samms her previous stints I have not been impressed with. I don’t see the writers straying from that but I may tune in to give it a chance. I don’t have a whole lot of confidence in it at all.

@PatF Cartini has been known to do the stunt casting especially since they took over GH. I think they did it at OLTL as well. It always helps the ratings short term but never the long term especially if the returning character isn’t sticking around.

  • Scott_N_ATL

Love that! GH is crazy addictive!

  • jonboyelk

GH using their vets????? What, one a week????? With no real story line???? They are wasted as filler material. The only one with story is Tracy. And I personally don’t get the Maura West nods. I can’t watch her; looks like her mouth is a botox clone of Jack Nicholsons Joker in the Batman movie.

  • Mike

    Joe S.

But with a good talented writer esp. as fast as they deal with stories on some of the soaps these days doesn’t need a long time to correct some mistakes.

I loved Frisco so I read the dailies while he was around. He could have easily been brought home short term dealt only with Maxie but I never even saw anything where it alluded to they even talked about things. I would have looked it up if I had known that for once Maxie was going to get to lash out at him and tell him what she thought of him.

You don’t need a long visit for that. Even though Jack Wagner did post on Twitter that he was willing to stay longer than he stayed. So not sure if he is just saying that or if he truly wasn’t willing to stay that long.

All I ever read about with Frisco was mostly him trying to get Felicia back.

I love family drama and for me it would have gone a long way if Frisco had even just admitted to Maxie that he wasn’t there for her and should have been. And to me that didn’t even have to be drawn out over months.

I loved Frisco and the Jones. If I had read anything that alluded to any of that I would have had to DVR from SoapNet during the marathons, but what I read in the dailies or heard discussed on the message boards even made me want to tune in to see him.

  • Joe S

@Mike well they did have Frisco admit to Maxie he wasn’t there and he did help her out of being blackmailed by Britt Westbourne. But yes majority of his story was trying to win back Felicia. When Felicia turned him down he left town. There definitely could have been far more in the relationship with him and Maxie but they barely addressed it.

  • Mike

What I don’t understand in regards to GH and it’s cast is that Frank V. said at the recent fan event that the show was constantly being hit with cut backs as far as budget.

If the budget is that tight and they keep getting faced with these then where in the world did they come up with the money to keep fighting with Prospect Park. And why did they feel it so necessary to keep these three when that would have been a perfect out for them as far as cutting costs.

Every contract has an out so they can easily cut an actor at various points and not face any damages for it. It is how they got rid of Jeffrey Steinmetz and others and how Y&R got rid of Debbi Morgan and Genie Francis before their contracts were up. The shows and networks protect themselves.

I just find it hard to feel sorry for anyone over cut backs when they do stuff that just makes no sense. It’s like someone getting a pay cut at work and going out and buying a new boat on the same day.

  • Joe S

@Mike I don’t think the fight with Prospect Park would have necessarily been out of the GH budget I am guessing that suit was with ABC. I don’t even think there has been any more on that so not sure what happened for that. Now as to if that money came out of the GH budget thus the cutbacks who knows.

The claims from Cartini was that if they did not use Howarth, Alderson, and Easton that they would have still had to pay them. I am not sure the truth to that I just know that has been the claim.

Honestly I am sure whether they kept those 3 or not they would have faced cuts as there are cuts all over the TV industry.

  • Mike

    Joe S

I am sure they would have gotten the cuts either way. It would have just been an easy out for the budget.

As to the contracts, if those 3 managed to get a contract without any outs then they are the most powerful folks in daytime.

Even actors who have been doing soaps for years have those standard outs in their contracts where the show can release them without having to pay them.

And if ABC allowed them to sign those type of contracts then they were really stupid esp. when they knew they didn’t have rights to the characters.

Even actors like Drake Hogestyn at Days has outs in his contract. At least 2 times now Days has dropped him before his contract was up.

I personally think Cartini are playing on the naivete of soap fans in saying they had to pay them. In hopes fans would support them. Because there sure a lot of actors who get fired well before they finish out their standard 3 and 4 years contracts.

As far as the thing affecting the GH budget, the biggest way it would have is PP set a certain date that they could not use the characters. If the characters were in scripts and all beyond that date and I am sure they were – all that stuff had to rewritten without the characters. Storylines had to be scrapped. New projections had to be created.

Writers had to put in double duty because they had to have 2 plans to go with not knowing if they were going to get to keep the characters or have to rewrite everything with new characters.

To me it just wasn’t money wisely spent if the show was already facing cut backs.
