ABC has cast Kelly Reilly (“Flight,” “Sherlock Holmes”) as Dr. Elizabeth Black in the limited series “The Black Box,” a 13-episode drama scheduled to air in 2014 on the ABC Television Network. Reilly plays a world-famous neuroscientist who unwraps the mysteries of the brain as she juggles complex issues of her own.

Elizabeth Black, world renowned neuroscientist, appears to have it all. In an impossible journey to find balance in her life, she is constantly haunted by her own struggle with mental illness. On the outside, Elizabeth has a special touch for the patients she treats at The Center for Neurological Research and Treatment, otherwise known as “The Cube.” However Elizabeth’s mental illness is not the only secret she’s kept locked away from her family and her new fiancé.

“The Black Box” was written by Amy Holden Jones (“Mystic Pizza,” “Indecent Proposal”). Simon Curtis (“My Week with Marilyn”) will direct. The series will be produced by Bold Films and sold internationally by Sierra Engine. Anne Thomopoulos, Bryan Singer, Ilene Chaiken and Oly Obst are executive producers.

    Looks like everybody is jumping on the “Limited Series” bandwagon.

    Speaking of this “limited series”, what is CBS’s “Hostages” considered? And can it be renewed for a season two if it does well, or is it a meant-to-be-one-season show?

  • Connman

    @HV: Not sure of the first question, and IMHO, anything CAN be renewed if the ratings are high enough. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always lead to good choices, though!

  • Tony JJ

    @HV. Yes. Hostages is a multi-season show but the seasons will be short. Jerry Bruckheimer just explained this at the TCA’s. they hope to be renewed for a second season and they already have things planned out. They even shot some extra scenes for future episodes with the pilot to prove it has longevity. So really “limited series” pretty much means a series but it will always have less than the full 22 episode season. Mini-series are shows that won’t get renewed for a second season unless they order a sequel mini-series.

    @Connman @Tony JJ
    Thanks! I have been wondering for a while.

    This sounds like a female version of Perception with a mystery twist?
