NBC preempts Days of our Lives if anyone even coughs. I am sick of NBC. Thank goodness for the Soap Channel..

  • LynTThis is what I look at because this drives their futures.ex

Things appear stable. But as for Y&R, last year this time was the shakeup in regime. Also, while total viewers increased (probably to see Phyllis leave the canvas), it has lost viewers in the 18 to 49 demo – the one that sets ad$$ and has more to do with show’s longevity! 783k out of 4.6m isn’t something to shout about. Advertising rates are set based on quarterly averages not week to week.

This genre needs new viewers, while holding on to its fans. This is what I am holding out for and hoping changes in s/ls that reflect more of 2013 (instead of the 60′s, 70′s, 80′s). We need stronger women portrayed. Not just those that lie, cheat, scheme to get a man. (Who’s the daddy has played out!)

This genre has a place but it must evolve.

I think they do somewhat but don’t give much emphasis as far as cancellation. I think they look at the recent and season to date numbers more for that.

I know that occasionally you will see press releases about the year ago being up. But they tend to put them out more for being up this quarter or for sweeps.

As far as these year to go ratings I think it is really hard to get a good idea on them as this was the first week of Olympics. And all the soaps but B&B were down for that week. So it is easy to be up from a year ago when your numbers were low anyway. The Olympics were really drawing viewers away that first week.

Here are the numbers for that week:

    Total Viewers
    1. Y&R 4,192,000 (-137,000/-557,000)
    2. B&B 3,090,000 (+41,000/-17,000)
    3. GH 2,264,000 (-168,000/-240,000)

    Households
    1. Y&R 3.1/9 (-.1/-.3)
    2. B&B 2.2/6 (same/same)
    3. GH 1.7/5 (-.1/-.2)

    Women 18-49 Viewers
    1. Y&R 798,000 (-76,000/-193,000)
    2. B&B 625,000 (-21,000/-33,000)
    3. GH 553,000 (+2,000/-182,000)

    Women 18-49 Rating
    1. Y&R 1.2/8 (-.2/-.3) <—– ties low
    2. B&B 1.0/6 (same/same)
    3. GH 0.9/5 (same/-.2)

Disappointed to see DAYS falling. The show has slowed down a little since Gabi gave birth and Kristen and Brady broke up but the writing and acting continue to be superb. I expect the ratings to climb again soon since the Sami being charged with murder story is finally beginning to heat up. My prediction is Benardi’s wife, Marge, will turn out to be the culprit. Hopefully, this will result in EJ saving the day and Sami! They are awesome together! Also, this storyline has given Judi Evans (Adrienne) a chance to show her acting chops. She’s been turning in some great performances lately, along with Wally Kurth (Justin). Kristen turning up the heat on Brady and Marlena again by using Father Eric is also bringing excitement to the show! Eileen Davidson deserves the Best Actress Emmy next year for her amazing work these past several months!!! Keep up the great work DAYS and the ratings will follow!!!

janiecec, I certainly DO agree with you about NBC. It is the NEWS division that makes those decisions to break in with the most often ridiculous bulletins that could wait until the evening news. I WAS HOPING after DAYS won the EMMY it would garner some respect from NBC. A question I wish someone would address is WHY WAS IT 10 days between the posting of the ratings this time? There was no HOLIDAY to blame it on. For the first time in ages the DAYTIME RATINGS were actually available on THURSDAY last period, but tehn as has become the norm, this week not only were they not posted Friday or even Monday, but TUESDAY! I just don’t understand the process that causes this to happen. Technically the numbers for August 5-9, 2013 should be out in 3 days or will it be 6-7 days?

I’d say today’s episode of DAYS was the funniest and most well written episode in years! Jennifer, Nicole, Adrienne, Kayla & Julie mistakenly eating doughnuts made with pot…couldn’t stop laughing. Well done DAYS!

  • opinion8d

I agree 100%, Justin! The scenes of Jennifer, Nicole, Adrienne, Kayla and Julie getting high were hilarious! Glad to see the producers and writers of DAYS allowing those characters and actors a chance to let their hair down and have some fun!!! DAYS is awesome!!!

There was no explanation given by SON as to why the ratings were late this week, however Bill Gorman the co founder of this site indicated that the ratings we do receive weekly are typically passed on through various sources. More than likely there was some trouble obtaining them this week, rather than the SON incompetence.

Just saw where the Las Vegas NBC affiliate has chosen to drop Days of Our Lives from its schedule as of this Friday. Days will now air on The CW affiliate there.

They are replacing Days on the NBC affiliate with The Doctors (syndicated talk show).

I don’t think that is a big market but it is never good when the affiliates start moving you to early morning, late night or drop you altogether.

At least fans will be able to see on The CW affiliate.

  • Mike

Read more of the story and comments.

That market is the 42nd largest market in the US — so not one of the biggest ones but not a small one either.

The Doctors is only a temporary replacement. The station has a contract with them. So they have to air The Doctors until that contract is done. They can’t replace it.

When that contract is done local news will air in the spot that is now held by Days.

  • Joe S

Never good news when affiliates start preempting or moving shows.

The thing is and this is a practice that goes back to the 70s and 80s the networks have always pretty much allowed this to happen in daytime. If an affiliate ever tried to permanently move a prime to show to another spot the networks would not be so easy going about.

I always remember where I live in the 80s our NBC affilaite did not air Another World. Instead they would air their news followed by a local talk show then love connection. Days would air an hour later than it was scheduled by the NBC affiliate. Another World was always moved to a low tier UHF station

The ABC affiliate here never aired Edge Of Night. As that was scheduled by ABC to be a 4pm EST program and they aired Donahue on the local affiliate. EON was moved to one of the UHF stations and air times bounced around. The ABC affiliate when Ryans Hope was moved to NOON, the local affiliate was not going to bump its newscase Ryan’s Hope would air at 11:30am one day behind.

    So nothing new to daytime.

If the networks locked something in that didn’t allow the affiliates to do this back then this wouldn’t be allowed to happen.

  • Joe S

As to the comment about breaking in for news, the local affiliates are even worse than the networks. They tend to break in for even the smallest things, some worse than others.

  • Mike

The guy that either owns or is the web master at SON had posted several months ago that the networks each have a protocol that if a show drops below a certain rating that the affiliate is allowed to move it or not air it at all. He listed the numbers — they were different for each network.

So I would imagine that Days current rating is low enough at least for that affiliate for them to move it.

We always got The Edge of Night but we lost The Doctors, Search For Tomorrow, Port Charles, Loving, The City, Ryan’s Hope and several others long before they were cancelled.

If you will look at patterns many of the cancelled shows through the years started losing affiliates toward the ends of their runs. All it does is lower the ratings more and speed up cancellation.

    *****

As to the networks and affiliates breaking in, I would hate to be a manager of either one and have to make the decision. Most fans of that show will most undoubtedly think it is stupid. But that one time they don’t break in they are going to hear from someone as to why they didn’t report on that. Or lost viewers to another station that did break in when they didn’t.

And I have noticed the lower rated a program is — whether prime time or daytime — affiliates or the network will break in on those shows more often than others.

We were watching NBC a few weeks ago during bad weather. Whatever was airing before America’s Got Talent at the time wasn’t getting great ratings. We constantly got interrupted while watching it, but then when AGT started they only broke in during the commercials and immediately got you back to the show. And would constantly remind people they weren’t missing any of AGT.

I really am enjoying Days, GH and Y&R lately. I loved the scenes with Jennifer and girls at the book club! Funny! Go soaps!!

  • CS’ Revenge

I agree with Justin 100% also yesterday’s episode was the funniest of any soap in years. Those ladies were hilarious and its a storyline that’s relatable to the viewers also and I feel like the soaps these days are at their best when they showcase relatable storylines.

I think DAYS has gone in the right direction with the JJ character, anything linking with him is coming off really entertaining and well done.

I’ll standby this and say that DAYS has been the best of the soaps quality wise the past 4 months.

  • CS’ Revenge

Let’s talk AMC and OLTL shall we?

    ALL MY CHILDREN

    Mon Aug 5 1:00PM 0.1 HH, 142,000 total viewers
    Tue Aug 6 1:00PM 0.2 HH, 216,000 total viewers
    * Wed Aug 7 1:00PM 0.2 HH, 276,000 total viewers
    Thu Aug 8 1:00PM 0.2 HH, 184,000 total viewers

    ONE LIFE TO LIVE

    Mon Aug 5 1:30PM 0.1 HH, 119,000 total viewers
    * Tue Aug 6 1:30PM 0.1 HH, 180,000 total viewers
    Wed Aug 7 1:30PM 0.1 HH, 163,000 total viewers
    Thu Aug 8 1:30PM 0.1 HH, 155,000 total viewers

If Oxygen keeps AMC and OLTL, then that will be a very good decision b/c these numbers are increasing week-by-week. I think more and more people are finding these soaps as AMC is now close to 300,000 viewers.

AMC was actually around 50,000 viewers around the time it started for a new episode so to grow 250,000 viewers since then is amazing.

I could see AMC and maybe OLTL touching 500,000 viewers if they were kept at some point before the end of the year. Maybe next year close to a 1 million viewers. If Oxygen actually had two properties giving them a 1 million viewers everyday during daytime then that would be really valuable in terms of the growth of the network.

So despite what anybody says it would be in Oxygen’s best interest to give the soaps more time to grow and sign a contract with them through next summer in 2014.

What really needs to happen though is that I feel like the online and television episodes need to be on the same schedule. Not online being that far ahead of television. The whole production needs to change back to 4-5 episodes a week as there’s still more value on television than there is online at this point.

I think Oxygen should’ve moved the repeats to late night so the soaps could get some extra exposure at decent hours of the days.

  • Mike

OLTL really lost a lot of viewers from it’s AMC lead-in. It’s clear that as much as fans fought to get both shows back, there is still a divide there. On Wednesday it lost over 100,000 viewers.

Unless PP can get out of the Hulu deal which they had where Hulu and ITunes get exclusive to the first run episodes then the TV episodes will always be a week behind.

And unless they do go back to at least 4 days TV stations are not going to be interested in only programming their daytime lineups around 2 days. If you will look most cable and networks run the same lineup 5 days a week from Monday to Friday. And OWN has already found out these soaps don’t repeat well thus they dropped them.

  • Mike

That above should just say always behind — not a week behind. I don’t know what the specific deal specified…I just read early on that Hulu and ITunes had the exclusive run of the episodes first and TV would always be delayed.
