Jennifer Lopez Returning to American Idol, According to Boyfriend Casper Smart

Looks like Jennifer Lopez isn't done living it up on American Idol

After months of speculation about whether Lopez would really be returning as a judge on the Fox reality competition's 13th season, her boyfriend may have just let the cat out of the bag.

"Yes," Beau "Casper Smart told E! News when we asked if J.Lo was coming back during a chat about his new show A Step Away for nuvoTV.

Apparently Smart thought that Fox had already made the announcement.

Nope, that was all you, sir. (The network, meanwhile, had no comment.)

Presuming Smart does indeed have the inside track on his lady's plans, Lopez will join returning judge Keith Urban, who delighted audiences in Season 12 as a fun-loving yet fair mentor. Fox Network President Kevin Reilly revealed at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that the network had approached Lopez in hopes of coaxing her back to the Idol panel.

"Jennifer has been a close part of the show all along…there have been discussions there," he said.

A few weeks ago, Idol host Ryan Seacrest exclusively revealed to E! News that the hit Fox series would be announcing the new juding panel "very, very soon"—though he probably didn't count on Smart offering up one of the missing pieces of that puzzle.

But who else will be snatching up the remaining seats? A handful of pop stars have been thrown into the mix of Idol possibilities over the past few months.

Former contestants like Jennifer HudsonKelly ClarksonClay Aiken, and Adam Lambert have all been cited as possible Idol alums being considered to replace Mariah CareyRandy Jackson and Nicki Minaj.

Adding to that long list of maybes, sources have said thatBlack Eyed Peas frontmanwill.i.am is also in the running to join the show along with ladies Katy PerryMiley Cyrus, and Fergie.

American Idol returns for its 13th season in January 2014.

Hilarious. The idiots running FOX spent $50 million last time and the ratings dropped 20% now they bring J. Lo back? Morons.

As a longtime fan of Idol and a huge fan of Mariah Carey, last season should haven absolutely blissful for me to watch. Instead, it was one of the most painful seasons to endure. Sure, Mariah definitely had her on faults on the program, especially her propensity to ramble on and on, and she and Nicki Minaj looked like they were about to break into a UFC title match at any moment, but that wasn’t the main reason Idol took a huge hit last season.

Idol’s biggest problem is its format. Especially the whole theme nights which tend to torpedo any potentially decent singer whose voice and style don’t fit the theme. And while I’ll admit that the Beatles and Motown put out some of the greatest music in the rock and roll era, the contestants probably never listened to any of their music because they were born either in the mid-1980’s to mid-1990’s, and to them classic rock and oldies consist of Michael Jackson, Madonna, and U2. Even some of the contestants admitted they were unfamiliar with the back catalog of the Beatles and Motown. On top of that, one of the theme weeks was the catalog of Burt Bacharach. Contrast that with The Voice, where the judges were wise and astute enough not only to pick more current music for their contestants to sing, but songs that actually fit their vocal abilities and stylings. Sure, Blake Shelton may be a country guy, but his team of contestants were also country people, and Usher did a good job of picking some pop and alternative music for his contestants as well. This is where Idol has been failing not just last season, but going back several seasons ago. It’s more evident now that they have competition.

Biggest mistake Fox ever did was continue American Idol after Simon Cowell left…. He owned that show… now all 3 original judges are gone, END IT, END IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nicki Minaj should had never NEVER been cast as a judge on there, shes about as worthless to that show as it gets…. American Idol needs to stop.

I hope this doesn’t interfere with the Fosters. Doesn’t she executively produce it?

American Idol’s biggest issue is that it is stuck in a fundamentally outdated format. In 2002, most Americans still had that dreadfully slow dial-up internet and maybe only one or two TVs in the house, making TV nights with the family an ideal pastime.

When things like FAST wireless internet, smart phones, DVR/Tivo, Netflix, and cheap cable tv became mainsteam and widespread in the mid-to-late 2000s, the reality is that people don’t want to sit around for a bazillion hours two night each week to watch predictable singing performances and get results that can easily be googled five minutes after the end of the show – there’s too much competition for our attention these days. It was a product of its time, and it’s time to put it to rest before it becomes embarrassing.
