As for the blackout, it’s just logical that there are some soap viewers in those 3 mil that can’t get CBS.

    I’m one for example.

My point was that even WITH the blackout, the CBS shows increased in the demos, and are still way ahead of last year.

That may change if JFP continues to strong arm everyone behind the scenes, and hire some writer who has no history of the show.

  • Mike

Pat F, I am sure there are too, but since they did go up in the demos but dropped big time in the Total Viewers either all those viewers affected in the blackout were men, girls under 18 or women over 49. And that would to me would be rare.

Add to that the blackout has had minimal effect on prime time so I think there was more at play than just the blackout with these ratings.

And I agree about the choice of writer, but again I don’t know how much is Phelps, how much is Sony and how much is CBS in all of this. CBS and P&G together destroyed GL and ATWT with the decisions they made. We know that CBS pushed the latest set of budget cuts on B&B.

Steve Kent at Sony is good friends with Phelps and even rumors they are dating.

Sony is the one that instead of pushing MAB to use Eileen Davidson forced Davidson on to Days of Our Lives.

So I don’t trust any of them.

DOOL had an unusually low Fri(1.6/2,198,000). I bet there were some preemptions somewhere.

People say all the time that the networks and the advertisers don’t care about all the viewers. They do care and want them. They are just willing to pay higher advertising rates if a show has a specific number of viewers in a certain age. Those are their target group.

And even with millions of people watching via computer, DVR, etc. they are still not a target group yet because the amount of viewers that one TV ad can get seen by is still an extremely larger number. Thus why shows like AMC and OLTL which are exclusively on the Internet can’t charge as much to advertise there. And neither can the soaps when selling ads for their online shows.

And they can’t boast yet the number of DVR views because still executives cannot guarantee advertisers that those DVR viewers are watching their ads.

Advertising is about numbers. And as you mentioned unemployment which brings up the economy. In this tight economy advertising is hit hard. And they have to spend their money wisely. So they are going to be advertising less on those programs that can’t guarantee them a certain number of viewers.

And what hits executives even harder and these lower rated shows is that executives have to promise advertisers guarantees which are based on sweeps ratings. If the show falters or does not deliver on that number of viewers then the network has to give advertisers free commercials during other programs.

Sadly in this day and time there are so many ways to view a program but live plus 1 still remains the most important to the shows we love.

    TS,

What day did the President have his press conference last week? Was it during Days? Or another time?

  • TS

    Hey Mike,

Google says the POTUS pc was Fri. Aug 9th at 3 PM EST. Days airs at different times throughout the US. Some viewers must have been cut off.

  • Mike

That’s weird. That would have been during GH’s time slot too. And GH went up on Friday. In fact Friday was GH’s highest rated day of the week.

Numbers can be very interesting at times.

  • Joe S

Obama’s speech was at 3pm EST, GH airs on the east coast at 2pm EST since the time change last September so would have had little effect on the east coast. Even in the west coast it would have been only noon so not sure what effect it would have had on Days or GH.

  • Mike

You are right Joe S. I was thinking wrong.

It always throws me off too since GH airs opposite Days here now since last September.

  • Bexx

Hmm, so the press release from ABC is that Katie is up by ‘double’ digits. Well now that certainly puts a damper on things for those GH fans who claimed Katie was a sinking ship. It’s nice to see things are working out for ABC with The Chew and Katie, hopefully this means more support from the network for both show.

  • Chrisann D

Bex Katie is a syndicated talk show. It airs on different networks…not just ABC.

  • Jeff

Katie is pulling in less than 2 million viewers per show, and her demos aren’t so great either. So her double digit increase is not all that hot, more like a desperate spin from a Katie staffer just to remind people the show is still airing.

    Just sayin’.

  • Mike

Staffers from the shows do not put out press releases. If they did then every show would get a press release every week. The networks do the press releases. In Katie’s case it would be the publicity department with ABC’s syndication division.

If each show had a press release department I could see someone with big egos like Jill F. Phelps or Ron Carlavati putting them out at the drop of a hat.

As to the numbers, it is not the numbers in particular that are impressive but the fact that she grew by double digit percentages.

The same with The Chew. Their demos are still not that impressive, but the fact that they have added over 100,000 18-49 female viewers since last year is impressive.

And Chrisann D. yes Katie does air on other network affiliates but even with that ABC/Disney still makes the money because their syndication department produces Katie. All the network affiliates that air Katie whatever they may be pay ABC’s syndication department for the right to air that program. So either way ABC is happy.

    @Deshawn

YOU’RE the one who needs to grow up. If you can’t tolerate anyone with a less-than-rosy opinion about GH without being rude in return, then I suggest that you do something else besides reading and commenting on message boards. Understand that just because you personally like GH, that does not mean that it’s every person’s cup of tea, and those people have every right to express themselves without being treated like that in return. Different strokes for different folks, and people have different tastes. You’re allowed to disagree, but you must learn to do it respectfully. If you can’t do that, then go away.

And if you really think that anyone who does not care for GH is “hating” on the show, well, that just that proves what an immature baby you are. That is the most tired, stale, unoriginal, overused, juvenile term I’ve ever seen. Anyone who uses it is basically whining, “Since I like the show, that must mean that everyone else on the planet does too. How can anyone not like this show? My opinion is right and anyone who disagrees with me is dead wrong.” GROW UP!

Funny, the only soap that people seem to get all bent out of shape over when someone dares to criticize it is GH. If you didn’t know any better you’d think someone insulted their spouse, parents, siblings, etc. For crying out loud, it’s just a silly TV show! No one seems to get like this over any of the other soaps.

  • Michele

OLTL is not doing too well on OWN – especially in the 18-49 group. I wonder if it’s the 1:30 timeslot?

  • CS’ Revenge

I do think that the hate GH gets is overblown and its just not by haters its from its own fans. I’ve gotten to the point with GH where I make my own judgements with the show and don’t even listen to people’s opinions about it anymore like I do with the other soaps b/c its gotten that ridiculous and the fans/haters thoughts are no longer credible at this point. I would suggest that others do the same from here on out when it comes to GH. I know some people on other sites started doing the same thing.

  • CS’ Revenge

As for AMC and OLTL, its a tale of two different soaps. AMC is doing well and starting to show consistency while OLTL is struggling and that Thursday number was nasty. I’m wondering when OWN is going to make their decision on if they’re keeping the soaps past September, I don’t see a reason why they wouldn’t at this point.

Like viewers of Hulu were saying AMC was the better soap and OLTL was falling off after a good start. This is where I think not having the contracts setup in favor of television over online becomes a problem because they can’t make changes on the fly with OLTL to get the ratings back up.

Let’s see what happens from here.

  • Mike

    CS’s REvenge,

I’m not a Prospect Park apologist like many but this is one I can’t blame PP on. They had to set up the contracts that way as no TV station was interested. They took what they could get and dealt with it. And Hulu I’m sure wanted some guarantee. Plus it is better for them in their fight with Amazon and Netflix over exclusive material.

Someone on another site (can’t remember which maybe SON) had said that the OWN deal was a take both shows or not any. Not sure why they posted that, but maybe OWN was interested in AMC but not OLTL. Haven’t heard that just guessing.
