I don’t want two former GH writers touching Genoa City.

    Although it’s a done deal.

The show will now have had four/five different headwriters in the past 6-7 years…contrasting with the three or so they had in the first 33.

Doesn’t Sony or CBS get it?

Angelica has been very quiet for about the past three or four months. I’d be interested to hear her spin on this.

Is it inconceiveable that CBS would deliberately sabotage their #1 daytime drama just for an excuse to cancel it and replace with less expensive programming? I can’t think of any other reading for their questionable decisions.

  • Mike

I think it boils down to a too many cooks in the kitchen just like at Days of Our Lives.

AT Days you have NBC’s vision, Sony’s vision and Corday’s vision and they are never the same. Thus leading to constant power struggles and bad decisions.

At Y&R, CBS has their ideas, the Bells have theirs, and Sony has theirs. MAB’s bad run has pretty much made the Bells input in Y&R nil now. She was so bad Sony and CBS don’t want another Bell protege to get near the show.

So now you have Sony and CBS fighting over what they each want.

Look at B&B there is only one boss — the Bells. Yes they have to deal with budget cuts from CBS but they have basically stayed out of things and let Brad Bell run it the way he wants. Adding Alden to the staff as well as Edward Scott and others to the staff at B&B have resulted in 2 solid years of increased ratings. Also they picked up one of GH’s best script writers ever in Michele Val Jean when Ron C. fired her.

Sorry PatF but I don’t consider JPass a GH writer. She hasn’t even written at GH for 2 years and never as head writer.

And just because someone has written at GH doesn’t make them a bad writer. Claire Labine was one of the best soap opera writers ever. I would give my eye teeth to have her writing Y&R or even Wendy Riche who was EP at GH for years. She would work wonders at Y&R as the executive producer.

But in the case of these 2 it is not that they have written for GH that makes them bad. It is just they are not good writers and the wrong writers for Y&R.

  • PatF

    Mike,

They’ve never written for a show like YR. The fact that she’s been there for two years isn’t the issue. She writes for GH under the team now which is a mess mostly. And the fact that Phelps was at GH for years just make it seem like she’s stacking her deck.

You and I really don’t agree on a lot, but I know we both know what’s best for this show. It’s not Phelps, Altman or Jean P.

  • Mike

I agree with you about them. I just disagree as far as the reasons.

I did read today that Kay Alden is retired now..so not chance of getting her back.

I just feel this is the future of soap writing now. The same old hacks who can’t find jobs anywhere else and are willing to write for the money that the networks are willing to pay now.

If Phelps went back to the type of producing she did at Guiding Light or Another World she could do wonders at Y&R. But she was with ABC for way too long. Phelps had good writers at both GL and AW too and yes she made some mistakes that angered fans but overall the stories were good. The shows won Emmys and they looked great.

But she won’t do anything with Jean P as head writer. Jean P loves stunt stuff, puts every couple in triangles that go nowhere, and very fast paced — to the point that key points of stories are glossed over. Her female characters are very weak. I just dread to see what Y&R will be under her.

  • PatF

    Right.

Regardless of the reasons…they are not right for the show.

And for all those that complained about the EPs and HWs from the past 7 years or so, I still say MAB and JG knew the most about the show.

Maria couldn’t write, no, but at least the show looked and sounded like YR then. Josh knew the characters and wrote some good stories for them.

With Josh gone, now we’ll have ALL the key elements from the show completely gone.

  • PatF

Yeah…those are not the best numbers for that network.

  • Mike

I am a firm believer that fans are part of the problem we have with soaps today as far as what they expect out of the soaps. And why the powers that be behind the soaps do some of the stupid things they do.

Just blown away by some of the stuff that has been going on with Twitter and some of the other Internet sites. Fans of the Wilson pairing on Days are threatening to quit watching because Days chose to recast the role of Will. They wanted Days to fire the other actor and write the couple off.

Chandler Massey chose to leave Days to go back to school. Why should the other actor be out of a job just because Massey wants to move in a different direction with his life?

  • Mike

Wow more bad news for Days of Our Lives.

Utah which is a big market is moving Days to 3 a.m. in the morning.

Plus CT and Philly are moving the show to Noon.

It is never good when the affiliates begin moving a show all over the place esp. to overnight time slots.

These are typical avenues many of the cancelled shows have taken through the years before they were cancelled.

Even though viewers can still tape the shows and watch it will greatly cut down on live viewers which spells more trouble for the budget.

  • Jeff

That is bad news Mike for Days. It’s what happened to Ryan’s Hope, Loving, and The City too before they got cancelled.

In separate news, new ratings out, and it was a decent week for GH! Up in viewers and demos by a decent amount. GO GH!

  • Frank

Really enjoying GH right now. Most of the sorylines are getting good again. I hope down the line Laura and Luke may get back together. Sure are alot of babies and a little too much surprised parentaged stories. The Quartermaine Mansion needs to hire a FULL-Time guard at the front door. Too much easy access. Eva is agreat new character to have!!

  • PatF

The new ratings are out on SON.

CBS didn’t fare well this past week.

Phelps better be sweating a bit, because once the Kay story wraps up and her new writers are at the helm, she could be in trouble.
