The Parent's Television Council has released a statement slamming last night's MTV VMAs (and Miley Cyrus' performance in particular) and are using it to push for the Television Consumer Freedom Act legislation to pass.

via statement:

MTV has once again succeeded in marketing sexually charged messages to young children using former child stars and condom commercials — while falsely rating this program as appropriate for kids as young as 14. This is unacceptable. This much is absolutely clear: MTV marketed adults-only material to children while falsely manipulating the content rating to make parents think the content was safe for their children. MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate ‘twerking’ in a nude-colored bikini. How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds? How is it appropriate for children to watch Lady Gaga strip down to a bikini in the opening act? How is it appropriate for 14-year-olds to see a condom commercial and a promo for an R-rated movie during the first commercial break?

This content would likely not be given a forum if it were on a broadcast network, yet MTV continues to push limits because it’s a cable network. But that does not mean MTV’s decisions have no consequences, especially for the millions of children who were targeted by MTV. We urge Congress to pass the Television Consumer Freedom Act which will give parents and consumers a real solution for future MTV VMA programs – the ability to choose and pay for cable networks that they want vs. having to pay for networks they don’t want. After MTV’s display last night, it’s time to give control back to consumers.

  • What.

    PLOT TWIST.

Billy Ray Cyrus is on the advisory board for the Parents Television Council. With being on the board, his task is working to assist the council in their goal of protecting children against profanity and violence in the media.

The real sad thing here is that the VMA’s are the closest you’d get nowadays to hearing any music on “Music Television”

  • Hardline_Pro

Funny thing is that 95% of the girls insulting Miley Cyrus act this same way at parties and and dance clubs…grinding and twerking on guys. Hypocrites.

  • Joseph

    This was a live event.

It may not have been possible in advance to give an accurate rating, so a “TV-14″ rating was a “best guess”.

I would think repeat showings (if any) will get a TV-MA rating.

  • Alex

do these people realize that 14 year olds are going to be freshmen in high school this year? i can guarantee you all of them know what condoms and twerking are. the ptc really just need to relax.

  • rob60990

Miley Cyrus has been trying to sex up her image for years and now she finally accomplishes it.

Um don’t kids get taught about safe sex in like the 5th grade?

  • No_Lie

The VMAs have been pushing the boundaries of appropriateness and good taste for over thirty years now so it is hardly surprising that last night’s show did the same. I wasn’t interested in watching that kind of thing so I came up with a totally new concept – I didn’t watch it. Amazing how well that works. You should try it sometime PTC.

  • Ted

Who the heck is that in the picture?! It can’t be Miley…

  • James

I don’t get the tongue thing. She just looks stupid and made a complete fool of herself.

Anyone who thinks MTV has ever been family friendly hasn’t watched MTV…ever.

  • SickOfStupid

I have no time for this PTC or whatever they are, I think people should do what they want, how they want, in or out of whatever they want. Sex it up, make it nasty. I just don’t care. However, I’m sick of children being taken seriously in the music business. This is Miley Cyrus. I’d like to see outrage over babies being treated like legends than them acting like idiots.

They’re to be ignored and cheered on only by the infants they made a career off.

  • blue

This council is crazy. Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant are on this network. The Real World is about drunks having sex. I need something to prevent this network from having more teenagers from applying to their shows. These people just look whiny.

  • Oh please

Oh come on, If your above the age of 10 years old then you know what twerking is and what 14 year old doesn’t know what a condom is, if its that much of a problem mabey you should pay more attention to what your child is watching

  • Paul

What Miley did and how she dressed was embarrassing.
That being said, the PTC should STFU.

  • ParentalControls

People can choose what they want to watch and block channels or even specific shows through parental controls. If the PTC wants their kids to be on 16 and pregnant and their other kids to be catfished cause they were so gullible then fine… But seriously, Miley crossed more than a few Blurred Lines last night. Referencing “Molly,” grinding on a married man, twerking on stage like that… Feel sorry for Robin being paired with the skank. Justin Timberlake absolutely killed it last night and deserves the video vanguard award!

  • Jon23812

@Alex, I think what the PTC thinks is that condom commercials are encouraging 14 year olds to have save.

    @Rob, no the 9th grade

  • Jon23812

    *sex, not “save”

  • ToeHead81

MTV needs to create a steady supply of Teen Mom’s for their programming some how. sarc/off.

  • Helmstrom

I disagree on everything else about Miley Cyrus but PTC is so ridiculous they don’t need to exist and they need to just go away.

  • jason50

Miley Cyrus trying to look like Tank Girl in the pic?

  • Helmstrom

“Funny thing is that 95% of the girls insulting Miley Cyrus act this same way at parties and and dance clubs…grinding and twerking on guys. Hypocrite”

This is actually a true statement, with all of these kids starting school today all over the nation I was hearing some high school girls on the bus talking about the way Miley was dressing and they were wearing some little shorts up their a– and they are acting like huge hypocrites today.
