The Parent's Television Council has released a statement slamming last night's MTV VMAs (and Miley Cyrus' performance in particular) and are using it to push for the Television Consumer Freedom Act legislation to pass.

via statement:

MTV has once again succeeded in marketing sexually charged messages to young children using former child stars and condom commercials — while falsely rating this program as appropriate for kids as young as 14. This is unacceptable. This much is absolutely clear: MTV marketed adults-only material to children while falsely manipulating the content rating to make parents think the content was safe for their children. MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate ‘twerking’ in a nude-colored bikini. How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds? How is it appropriate for children to watch Lady Gaga strip down to a bikini in the opening act? How is it appropriate for 14-year-olds to see a condom commercial and a promo for an R-rated movie during the first commercial break?

This content would likely not be given a forum if it were on a broadcast network, yet MTV continues to push limits because it’s a cable network. But that does not mean MTV’s decisions have no consequences, especially for the millions of children who were targeted by MTV. We urge Congress to pass the Television Consumer Freedom Act which will give parents and consumers a real solution for future MTV VMA programs – the ability to choose and pay for cable networks that they want vs. having to pay for networks they don’t want. After MTV’s display last night, it’s time to give control back to consumers.

her parents should be ashamed of her

  • Herman

Miley is acting like a sl*t. She should be ashamed of herself. It would be different if she was not “once upon a time” child star that all the kids wanted to be. Now she is going to the extreme to show she is not that any more. I will not support her in any way at all. By the way, I am not hating on anyone — this was just pathetic!!

  • Melanie P.

@Herman, I so agree with you!

Miley is trying waaayyyy to hard to prove she is grown up! Keep it classy, not sleazy. Compared to Miley last night, Britney Spears’ past VMA’s performances look tame.

  • Wade

MTV only puts out this kind of garbage. Miley has turned into pure trash. Lady Gaga on the other hand has already established she is pure trash.

  • Bunzie Wininger

I feel sorry for Miley, making a fool of herself-trying to get all the attention-she is searching for something and she knows this is a horrible thing she is doing!!!! May God help her before it’s too late!

  • Brian

Miley Cyrus is just plain NASTY! along with MTV

  • robby

you know what i think i think it is time for law enforcement to buckle down miley cyrus should go to jail for obsenity i didn’t watch the awards and don
t care to watch mtv or miley cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus agrees with her doing it that is sick. i will listen to my oldies and classic country as well as my christian music

  • Dan

The PTC should STFU but I cant stand Miley so good thing i skipped her perfomance.

  • tim_m

@robby seriously? Give me a break. She was bumping and grinding in a bikini! You see people wearing less at a beach and dancing worse at a club. It was a stupid performance and that’s about it.

  • sehenson24

I agree about the Miley thing, but I don’t see how the Gaga bathing suit is inappropriate, have these 14 year olds not been to the beach before. Also, I don’t understand how a condom commercial is inappropriate, they teach that stuff specifically to 14 year olds in school.

  • Kaylie

@Jon8312 Safe sex is taught in the 5th grade. Thats when I was taught in school.

PTC acts like MTV isn’t capable of doing these things. Theyre the only network that pushes these boundaries & does these outrageous things because they want the publicity. MTV has been doing that for 30 years now & theyre so popular because of it.

  • Theoacme

The Parent Television Council – well, if y’all want your kids to live in an Amish convent, you’re way, way, too late – TLC has the Amish Mafia on the schedule, and there was a real mass Amish school shooting a few years ago, where the shooter was going to actually sexually assault the girls, and had let the boys go (sounds like PTC would have given the guy the Congressional Medal of Honor) :p

  • Alan

How can they blame MTV when the singers do what they want anyway? Sex sells, but I agree that Miley’s performance was over the top and she’s a sl*t.

  • Sunshine

Who in their right mind can stand her VOICE…never mind her “performances? It’s like fingernails on a blackboard.

  • Greg

I agree with Jeff (Canada) on taking her off to somewhere there she can have no hollywood spot light on her EVER AGAIN!!!

  • Greg

And i never care for MTV for decades now. it just keeps getting worse on there every year on that channel. and there no talent anymore on MTV. It just all lousy and decaying MTV now

  • cas127

I thought this was the half time show for the Special Olympics – as Presented By Bill Clinton.

  • Kenn

At least she’s got some attention as she hoped. LOL.

  • Spartacus 6666

Saw a few seconds of this. Just another trashy slut in the making. But apparently that’s the way things are nowadays. Young girls and women acting with no inhibitions.

  • James

Geez, I don’t get why so many of you are opposed to people having morals and standards.

MTV has brought nothing of worth to our society or culture. The PTC isn’t in the wrong here.
