Mike…if “Days” is moved to different time periods by NBC owned affiliates, then the network does have some input. The NBC executives can dictate to those owned & operated (O&O) affiliates where “Days”, or any program, can be aired. Other, independent affiliates are a different story. The Salt Lake affiliate, owned by the LDS (Mormon) Church, seems to have long been a thorn in the side of the networks. (It used to be affiliated with CBS before being dumped by that network and picked up by NBC.) That affiliate just recently started airing “Saturday Night Live” after years of refusing to do so. It also regularly refuses to air series that deal with controversial topics, such as the comedy “The New Normal” last season.

Instead of blaming the CBS/Time Warner feud or other outlying factors for why the soaps are down, a more benign reason may simply be because it is August. August is traditionally a down month for the soaps. “Days” is down year-to-year because it had a couple weeks of artificially inflated ratings coming off of its two-week pre-emption due to the Summer Olympics in London.

Those Days ratings have more plus numbers than negative numbers. It won Best Daytime Drama at the Daytime Emmys this year if you forgot plus Outstanding young actor for Chandler’s character Will. While other soaps have comeback character parades like GH and time Warner people watching alternative viewing on Soapnet, TV guide network, Days won the biggest award this year a first since the late 1970s and their storylines are getting wicked! Plus news that Chandler as Will is leaving and being replaced makes fab of the two time Emmy winner more of a must see before his departure. Plus Chloe will guest star and Kimberly is coming back to grab her naughty immature adult daughter Theresa by the ear! And Eric is finally going to remember how Kristin date raped him in disguise which will ruin her 2nd bigger ring engagement to Brady!! If only Marlena knew how easy it’s going to unfold as she’s plotting Kristin’s demise haha

  • Mike

All of the other reasons you mentioned have more to do with why people would tune in than the Emmy wins. The Daytime Emmys became irrelevant years ago. Less fans watch or care about the daytime Emmys than watch the soaps themselves.

Many actors don’t even list their Daytime Emmy wins on their resumes.

Jay, The point I was trying to make and not effectively is that with the 2 network owned affiliates moving Days to the earlier time slots NBC is not going to do what fans want and make the affiliates air Days in the afternoon or later.

I just think NBC has their mind so much on their prime time mess that the 1 hour of afternoon programming they have left is not a big priority for them. That is sad but it just seems to be the truth.

The new Lulu has to go! GH is making another great turn around. I have watched for almost 30 years. I wish and hope this current turn around lasts. I love the writing right now! I am actually rewatching episodes! I can’t wait to get through the weekend just to watch GH.
I am sad to see Connie go. I did not like her at first. What an amazing talent. She was fantastic and believable furring the breakdowns. There was so much room for failure and cheese with that story line but she was probably the only one who could have made that work.
My beef right now is the casting of Lulu. The new Lulu had some major shoes to fill but she has had plenty of time to prove herself. I give her a D grade to be nice lol. She is lacking the fire and does not even have a glimmer of talent. I think the straw that broke the back for me today. Watching her with Luke and lack of connection. Her awful fake dry emotional conversation with Nicholas the fake awful cry and again lack of connection with him. It’s just so forced. Her chemistry with all of them is just not there.
Everything is so exciting again but she just a biz kill for me. Today possible goodbye to Luke, conversation terrible fake cry to Nick, lack of chemistry with the rest if the actors is just disappointing.
Is it just me? It can’t be.

Surprised by BB’s drop, maybe the departure of Steffi and Taylor has had an impact. It’s been must see TV for me-Heather Tom playing Katie has been amazing. I like her with a back bone. But the demo’s are skewing ‘old’, I think because of the focus on Brooke/Bill. It is difficult to maintain the balance and tell a robust story in half hour.

Please to see an increase in DOOL at last. IMO the storyline went flat and lost focus after Brady and Kristen’s first split and Sonny’s baby was born. But with fragile ratings DOOL has they cannot be complacent-they need to up the pace and build a strategy quickly. The upcoming cast changes will not help, though.

To all YR fans-my sympathies with the change of writers. I was not keen on Jean Passante’s work on GH.

Anyone enjoying the online soaps? I watch more OLTL now than before it went off the air. Not the best it’s ever been, but I am more interested in it now.

  • Joe Johnson

The more that they show Felicia, the more that the ratings go up. Give Kristina Wagner a big storyline, GH. She is a ratings magnet, and there still is a lot of story left in the character.

  • ScottNATL

Should be even better next week for ratings….this past week exploded on GH! Here’s to another 50 years!

  • ScottNATL

@TJ….I am actually only keeping up with OLTL, loving it. The season finale ended very very well I thought! AMC lost my interest pretty quickly but I hope they both make it.

  • lll

Ever since Steve Burton left GH, Ron C has made general hospital watchable again. Every cast member is connected to at least two storylines, so they have a lot of story to tell without burnout. I love how everyone gets air time and I love how he honors history by adding the Jeromes, bringing back fan faves like Robin, Lucy, Scotty and Laura, and mentioning that Sam has a father (that we finally know about) in the picture. Jill Farren Phelps killed GH with its Sonny/Brenda/Carly/Jax foursome, the constant Sonny/Jason mob wars, and the ‘end of the world’ crisis moments that hook you in the beginning and end up a failure. I hope she never comes back to GH.

  • Mike

    TJ & Scott,

I am exactly the opposite. I don’t watch them online but been watching them on OWN. I have lost interest in OLTL but enjoying AMC. But I haven’t been a big fan of OLTL in years and the new show just hasn’t offered me anything new to want to tune in.

AMC just seems more like a reboot — a nice blending of old and new.

    @Millisa McGuire

I sorta know what you mean about Emme Rylan as the new Lulu. I think she is ok, she is a soap vet herself coming from Guiding Light and Y&R but Julie Marie Berman’s portrayal of Lulu, spoiled us all because she really owned the role from the day she started! I thought she had such a natural chemistry with everyone. I miss her alot and I know it was her decision not to renew her contract. Just wish that Valenti and Carlivati would have pushed for her to stay, although this may have happened and we just don’t know, but I doubt it. Anyway, I don’t really mind new Lulu. Just will be glad when they wrap up this baby storyline. Other than that, I have really been enjoying GH overall.

  • sofaspud

As awful as it sounds, it seems Jeanne Cooper left at the right moment. I’m sure that Jill “the butcher” Phelps would have pulled an “Anna Lee” on her. Better to go with dignity.

  • TJ

@Mike, yeah I watch on OWN too. OLTL has gotten better as it went along at least try to finish the 1st season and see what you think.

  • robert sprague

I agree with joe . Kristina wagner is a wonderful beautiful lady that deserves more storyline send her to work at police station or her and sam or alexis team up don’t waste the talent.,

  • Tom

Just a little concerned ABCD did not issue a press release for GH being no. 1 in 18-34. If The View, Chew or Katie did this the network would plaster a release everywhere!

  • Rickster

I keep telling myself the DAYS fall recently is due to the DAYSASTER last year around this time … It will be ok :)

  • Mike

    Rickster,

I don’t believe that Days fate rests in the hands of the comparison of the year to go ratings. It looks good to fans I am sure to see it being up, but when NBC decides if it will keep Days or not — it will be solely based on what it is doing today. And the more recent fall from June to now.

The only thing that might play into consideration as far as the year ago ratings is the fact that it is the same team that brought those ratings in at the time but didn’t keep things going to make people want to tune in.

That is the only thing about the current team is that they have been able to increase ratings short term since they returned but they never hold on to them.

But then again that pretty much describes the other teams on soaps today too.

  • Mike

The big danger with year to go ratings for fans is they look at them — if their show is down they get discouraged and think there is no hope or if they are up then they think there is nothing to worry about.

B&B has been up from last year for the most part for 2 years now. But their most recent 18-49 key demos have still been low. And that is why the show is still getting budget cuts. CBS can’t charge the advertisers the same ad rate as they did — so less money coming in means budget cuts. Thus why the cast was asked to work for less money.

The biggest thing that is hurting with Days right now is the demos which will ultimately result in more budget cuts, but it also makes their rating low enough that now affiliates can choose to carry the show or discard it. Unless it is in an area where Days still does well then I would bet that the news of time changes, etc. will continue for now. Discarding Days means that the affiliates can program the whole afternoon now since NBC has no other shows after Today.

  • Tom

ABCD is not promoting GH like they were this time last year. Should fans be concerned or have they learned a lesson? Katie is not likely to be renewed and is constantly in creative flux. The Revolution lasted only a few months. Good Afternoon America had only a small increase in viewers than The Revolution. I guess it comes down to accepting smaller numbers vs more eyeballs and a narrower profit margin. FV reportedly is complaining of smaller budget for the show. Any thoughts?
