Breaking Bad was Sunday's top cable program with a 2.6 down up last week's 2.2 adults 18-49 rating. NFL Countdown and Dexter tied for second with each earning a 1.1 adults 18-49 rating. The premiere of Boardwalk Empire earned a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating. Your predictions were too optimistic.

We only receive the top 100 cable shows for adults 25-54 for the whole day from our principal source. If you don’t see an original episode of a show here, it’s because it wasn’t in the top 100.

The list below is long but you can use your browsers "find on page" feature (usually CTRL+F or CMD+F) to search for specific shows.

Nick, think you could post the ratings for Vortexx on The CW on 8/24 and 8/31 for K6-11 and possibly K9-14 and K2-11, and this time, would it be possible to have the first hour included? Also, how would we interpret these ratings?

    Copper numbers?

  • Ser Tahu

Does anyone have the numbers for The White Queen?

  • stiller

That’s really good for Breaking Bad. Almost reached its premiere numbers, despite airing against football. And it was quite the intense episode at the end.
Wonder how it will fare next week?

  • James

Note to Television: Take a lesson from Breaking Bad.

Dexter and Breaking Bad are ending together, but nobody cares about Dexter cause its ending 3+ years late. Breaking Bad is ending at the top of its game and earning respect for that. – Important Lesson

It seems the vast majority of television critics and TV fans and/or enthusiasts disagree with you. Boardwalk Empire has been one of the best shows on television since its first season, and has gotten better over time, by most accounts. This latest premiere certainly wasn’t an amazing episode, but the show is structured much more like a novel than a traditional serialized television show, and has been know to start slow and gather speed as the season progresses. I don’t see why this season would be any different.

In any case, those are respectable numbers, all things considered. I guess you could call it fan excuse bingo, but when your show is up against two shows who are airing their final seasons (though Dexter should have ended long ago) and the first Sunday night football game of the season, posting numbers like that isn’t bad at all. Not great, certainly, but this is HBO we’re talking about, so these numbers ultimately mean very little to them.

Also, Low Winter Sun is bombing spectacularly, which – in retrospect – isn’t much of a surprise. They should have paired it up with Hell on Wheels on Saturday, and leave Sunday to Walter White (and Chris Hardwick, apparently).

  • Jon

Hey, how did ‘America the Wild’ do on Nat Geo Wild??

  • Lisa

I feel kind of bad for Low Winters Sun. I can’t really get into it but it had very little chance after Breaking Bad. Once an episode ends I have a very hard time getting into any other show. My mind is so full of Breaking Bad. It would have been better of airing Pre-Breaking Bad.

  • Richard

@Weez Boardwalk Empire does move slower than other shows. The ratings for Boardwalk Empire keep going down, why do you think that’s happening? Usually ratings increase if it’s a good show. I watch Boardwalk Empire, but I watched Dexter and Breaking Bad first. I think even Homeland will get higher ratings than Boardwalk Empire. This is probably one of the two best ratings performances for Boardwalk Empire this season. Last year after the first episode HBO renewed Boardwalk Empire, so it seems like HBO has less enthusiasm than last year.

  • Alma

HBO has True Detective and possibly a Guillermo Del Toro series coming up for next year, so yeah, I think Boardwalk Empire is done after this season. The numbers are very decent where it any other network. HBO likes to be at #1 or #2.

I think Starz will be back in the game next year with Black Sails and Outlander.

I think Showtime is heading into hard times. Women fake orgasms so they can go back to whatever it was they were doing, the actress in the promo for Master of Sex says. I mean, how dated is that line of dialogue? Very.

  • Mark3

Dexter and breaking bad r the best tv shows on tv period! Im gonna b sooooo depressed in two weeks or so when there all done. I need shows similar to them!!!!

  • Richard Harrow

@Richard At lease get your facts straight. HBO renewed Boardwalk last year after 3 episodes. And did you just compare Dexter to Boardwalk? Everyone hates Dexter. It’s just idiots watching now. Critics make fun of it, it’s a joke. And I love Homeland, but it did not get better in season two and the first ep of season 3 isn’t great. Boardwalk has increasingly gotten better and it’s a great show. Sunday’s episode was awesome. This is HBO. They have no commercials so it’s fine. If this was on FX or AMC it’d be renewed in a heartbeat.

    Jerk.

  • Rigodon123

    @Nick

Vortexx ratings for all age demographics and Total viewers including Yu-Gi-Oh and Zexal?

  • Weez

    @ Richard

I don’t disagree that the ratings have gone down, but for some reason, this has coincided with a steady increase in overall quality. The numbers are still there for the show (not to mention that season 3 averaged between 8-9 million viewers across all platforms, I believe), and so is the critical acclaim and awards recognition (though not for the Emmy’s this year, apparently). The sets are already built, the contracts are already signed, and as a network, HBO has taken a decidedly different approach to how, why, and when they end their original series’ (even Life’s Too Short got a wrap-up special, for goodness sake).

Make no mistake, Boardwalk will get a chance to finish its story. I believe Winter mentioned that he envisioned the show going six seasons, so the only thing that remains to be seen is if HBO will decide to cut that short and have them end things suitably in five). My guess is that HBO will soon add another night of original programming during each of their programming quarters, simply due to the large number of continuing shows they’re airing, the number of new shows that have/will premier/ed over the next few months, and the sheer number of shows that are in development and/or committed for a season order. I think HBO realizes the huge benefit that HBO Go provides the network, and they also realize that the more current exclusive programming they have airing (both on the network and through their digital platform), the more attractive an HBO subscription becomes. With that in mind, I can’t see them cancelling an established, high-quality show like Boardwalk just because it isn’t blowing things away for its initial viewing airings (against very tough competition, no less).

Clearly, a winner for Starz. I’m curious whether they will produce a second season without the BBC.

Folks who ask about ”The White Queen” and ”Hell on Wheels” should first visit the futoncritic Tuesday afternoon (Eastern Standard Time) who usually posts the ratings for those two Saturday shows (as well as Cedar Cove).
