While ranking can be an indicator about a show’s success, the actual ratings are what mostly matters.

You can be #1 and have poor ratings. Likewise, you can be last and still have good ratings.

  • KansasGuest

In nighttime, what REALLY matters is how a show’s ratings are in-house, compared to the other shows on the network. Because CBS shows get such monster ratings, they had no hesitation in cancelling a show like VEGAS even though it was #1 in its time slot, with a viewership that any NBC show would have considered a hit. Is it the same for daytime, with soaps compared to daytime talk shows & game shows on their network instead of the 3 other remaining soaps on network tv?

Also, does anyone know what kind of ratings the Spanish telenovelas get compared to broadcast soaps? They are a hoot! I was in a Mexican restaurant where one was being broadcast, and while cheesy, their production values are impressive. Location shoots at the beach, everyone impeccably clothed…just saying…

  • sophie

I agree with you Robbie 66. I thought with Jason leaving a year ago for sure the ratings would go down. Instead they’ve kinda gone up. Sonny bores me lately too. But he’s the only one. I agree wih Ava and Derrick being great casting. They add alot to the show. She has great chemistry with everyone. She BEAUTIFUL. Great job GH!!!!

  • Chrisann D

Glad to see all the soaps up. Hate all the fighting on this board. Nick and Bexx are really getting on my nerves. So I am just skipping over their nasty comments. I for one am not going to respond to them…they’re not worth it. Hope the soaps keep climbing up in viewers. Go soaps!!!

  • Deeann

GH is crap! I can’t believe anyone thinks otherwise. I guess there’s no accounting for taste.

  • Deeann

P.S. Can we get non-acting and unattractive Michael Easton and Roger Howarth off GH now?!

  • James

HAPPY FOR GH AND THE SOAPS.

  • Bexx

I’m getting on your nerves because you don’t like what I have to say? You say that you’re skipping over my comments because I’m not worth it, but you still couldn’t help mentioning my name? Grow up girl, and realize that it’s a large world out there, no one has time to cradle your easily bruised feelings, sorry but I’m not going to filter my comments because some anonymous person haven’t figured out where they are. I have just as much right to be here as you do. If the internet is too harsh for you, perhaps you should take some time off, maybe garden, dust off the holiday ornaments, take in some sightseeing, something that can help to calm your nerves.

Chrisann D…in response to your post towards the end of last week’s post, I hope you are enjoying Iowa. Tennessee is still good, although I hope the Farmer’s Almanac is wrong about us having a cold and wet (read: snow) winter. I have no problem with snow…as long as it stays off the roads and streets. ;-)

I agree about all the infighting. I have a very weird taste in entertainment. For example, I watch “Suits” on USA Network (which is odd in itself as I usually have no interest in legal dramas), but also enjoy the crass “Brickleberry” on Comedy Central and the Fox animated comedies. My tastes seem to run the gamut. Personally, I don’t have a problem with most of the changes that Jill Farren Phelps has made to Y&R, but some people seem to loathe her. That doesn’t mean my opinion is wrong or that someone else’s is right, or vice versa.

Personally, I don’t know why people really care about other’s opinions on a TV show. If I don’t like a TV show, odds are my dislike isn’t going to get it canceled. I don’t believe that a network executive is sitting in his or her fancy office saying “JayTN isn’t watching our show…cancel it.” I’m not saying that anyone is right or wrong in their comments. I can only control my actions and I try very hard to stay out of arguments. That is one reason why I try to avoid talking about storylines or anything happening on a particular soap and just stick to the ratings. My only wish would be that people can disagree without being disagreeable.

For people who are telling others to “get a life”, “Bexx” and “Nick” and how they call themselves are spending an awful lot of time on several boards with their continuous soap-bashing spam. I’m wondering who needs to get a life here. Or is it that bashing soaps and soap fans and trying to gag them IS their life??

  • Kelby

DOOL is awful! Y&R is awful! Katherine’s funeral was awful! Cancellations on the horizon.

  • Luciano

@Kelby: Hi “BexxPhilipNickKelby..”, is it you?

Still your total loss of reality?

Why on earth would anyone cancel the only programs that are getting the key demo numbers (women 18-49) that advertisers are actually paying for?

Season average of the soaps is the best since 2007-08!

1st week of September was the best since 2008!

ALL soaps are up huge in comparison to (not only) last year.

If there is anything on the horizon, it’s MORE soaps again (the replacement shows are only getting about HALF the ratings in the key demographic). It’s not about Kelby’s wonderland, it’s about business!

  • Mike

Luciano — That phrase best since 2007-2008 sounds awfully familiar to the phrases that SoapsFanTogether, LukeNoahFan, and numerous other names similar to those have been posting on numerous boards.

Do you honestly think that little of your fellow soap fans to think we are so stupid? That is basically what you are saying — my fellow soap fans are so stupid they won’t figure out that I am the same person. They are going to think wow hundreds of folks are agreeing with me.

All you are succeeding in doing is making people think even worse of soap fans. Every once in awhile you make a few good points but they are ruined by your mass posting under different aliases. Even if you wanted to make any kind of point for network executives to take note of it is lost because all they see is a soap obsessed nut and write you off.

  • Nick

    @Luciano

SoapsFanTogether, is that you? We’re on to you, pal. I too noticed those same exact phrases as before. Do you honestly think that you’re fooling anyone here with the same exact, tired, false crap over and over and over but under different names? BUSTED!!

And you have the unmitigated audacity to force people/executives to take soap fans seriously and wonder why they don’t? With your bully-boy attitude, that will happen when pigs fly. All you’re doing is inviting even more and more ridicule, which is no surprise.

  • Nick

@Luciano/SoapFansTogether (you must have been up all night coming up with that alias)

It seems that you can dish it, but cannot take it. That’s the definition of a bully. If you cannot disagree civilly in your posts without acknowledging that many disagree with you, then I suggest that you do something else and go somewhere else with your free time, which you seem to have a lot of.

  • SoapFansTogether

@Mike: So, you’re having a problem with facts, too?!

Rather 20 people who post facts and figures than 1 spammer who keeps doing nothing else than denying facts and bashing soaps and their fans.

Do you think soap fans and people in general are so stupid not to see through these fake comments only designed to demoralize and silence soap fans?

I’ve got another summary of facts and numbers:

    – Season average of the top 4 soaps (household total) is the best since 2007-2008

    – Y&R’s season average is the best since 2010-2011

    – B&B’s season average is the best since 2007-2008

    – DAYS’ season average is the best since 2009-2010

    – GH’s season average is the best since 2007-2008

    – ALL soaps are drawing significantly higher ratings in the women 18-49 key demographic (that advertisers actually pay for) than any other daytime genre

    – Replacement shows for ATWT, GL, AMC and OLTL are drawing only about half the numbers of the remaining soaps in the key demographic (and of the ratings the cancelled shows were getting even in their weakest period).

    Now, go on whining!!

  • SoapFansTogether

@Nick: Considering how many times YOU have copied and pasted the exact same soap-bashing comments on several boards (always denying pure and simple facts) the one who’s obviously having a lot of time and needs to get a life is YOU!

  • Mike

    SoapFansTogether/Luciano/LukeNoahFan/and all your multiple IDs

Your facts would be great if that was the whole story. But it is not.

You just totally want to ignore the other side of the story and say it is not important or that it is just an excuse. But you cannot throw out numbers and forget the budget.

Even though the numbers are higher in the 18-49 for soaps — the budget for soaps even with cuts is still much higher than the replacement shows — so it all works out.

B&B’s numbers have been going up for 2 years but CBS still had to cut the budget this year.

Frank Valentini just confirmed that GH is still getting budget cuts and limits what they can do. And GH is set to finish with the highest number of total viewers than they have had in years. But their 18-49 are lower still than they were in 2011.

Plus you are counting season totals which includes 7 days of DVR viewing when the number that the advertisers care most about is the Live plus 1.

Even Prospect Park said for online viewing that the sooner fans watch AMC and OLTL online the more money they get. And encouraged fans not to wait to watch but watch as soon as they could.

Ratings are not a popularity contest. It is not all about which show has the highest numbers. When the networks can figure out how to produce the soaps for the same budget they do a show like The Chew or The Talk then they will be happy with the numbers the soaps are getting. But for now they are not. And that is why you will continue to see them make cuts and continue just like CBS did with hiring Jill F. Phelps for Y&R. Her #1 assignment given to her she said in an interview was to make Y&R cheaper.

The networks are about money. They are running a business and whichever shows make them the most money those are the ones they will keep putting on. That’s why right now when one talk show gets cancelled they have 2 or 3 more waiting in the line to take it’s place.

In the article that they talked about Katie not working. What did they say they were looking for to replace it? A soap opera? No. They are looking for another name person to star in another talk show.

It’s not an anti-soap agenda. It’s just simply stating the facts the way they are. Years ago when soaps were making money for the networks you had writers like Douglas Marland and Agnes Nixon who constantly had soap bibles in their drawers and the networks wanted them. Shows like Days and GH were constantly in talks for the networks wanting spin-offs. When Passions or Sunset Beach was put on NBC there were 3 other soap operas they were considering but chose those.

Times have changed. It’s not the soaps they are scrambling for. At least not until someone can come up with a way to finance them and produce them cheaper. It’s just the reality of the situation we are living in right now.

  • Nick

@Luciano/SoapFansTogether and your other made up aliases that we can see right through

Cry me a river with your pathetic s**t, you jerk. It smells like you desperately need your mommy to change your dirty diaper. Do you throw a hissy fit and berate everyone in your life who disagrees with you about things that are actually important or tells you something that you don’t want to hear? You are one sick puppy. And you wonder why soap fans are seen as such loonies by regular people out and about in the real world?

If you’re unable to post and (dis)agree like a civil person without being a schoolyard bully, then GET LOST. You’re not welcome here if you’re unable to do that. I won’t tolerate being berated on this board, nor will anyone else. Stay classy, loser.

  • Tom

Hmmmmmm. Soaps are up and PP has shelved OLTL. ABCD want to right a wrong?? A fan can dream….
