this is the only thing i dont know, and that is how do you convert 18-49 ratings into actual numbers in viewers, is there some sort of maths behind it.

  • liv

and is there a difference calculating it when it comes to cable or are they both the same

  • Christian

So I guess the late afternoon NFL overruns will now be part of the weekly ratings? I see that the Fox overrun was counted last week as well.

“and is there a difference calculating it when it comes to cable or are they both the same”

For ratings covering the entire US TV population they are the same. Occasionally, cable networks quote “coverage ratings” in press releases that are % of only their subscriber base.

So this most likely means now that at the end of the year the top 3 shows will be:

    #1 fox national game
    #2 cbs national game
    #3 SNF

  • Liv

    Thanks @bill I finally understand

  • hanp

So which network is projected/predicted to take the demo crown this season? Is it Fox due mainly to Super Bowl? Or it’s basically up for grabs?

“So which network is projected/predicted to take the demo crown this season? Is it Fox due mainly to Super Bowl? Or it’s basically up for grabs?”

Fox or CBS, but probably Fox.

Not nearly so cut and dried as last season when CBS was a mortal lock because of post season primetime NFL games.

That’s typically how it goes, although during Tebow-mania I believe CBS beat FOX for the season. Not surprisingly, the broadcast rights fees reflect those rankings (FOX $1.1B/yr, CBS $1.0B/yr, NBC $0.95B/yr).

FOX has the Super Bowl, the NFC Championship in primetime, and is very likely to have a better World Series this year. They’re not a lock to win, but easily have the best chance of winning.

While that’s how it likely has been in actual rankings, that’s not always the way Nielsen has reported its primetime show ratings (at least to the media), which in the past have not included the separate ratings for the Sunday late overruns.

I’m guessing romo’s point is (and I would agree) that if Nielsen is in fact now reporting those overruns as separate primetime shows then the Fox National Game and CBS National Game would now lead both the weekly, and seasonal “Top Shows” lists.

Ah, that could be the case. They may also only be reporting them in the weekly rankings, but will leave them out of the full season rankings.

I’ve seen the late game show up in weekly rankings before. It all seems very arbitrary.

  • jp

well…expect CBS to win again since they’ll have the national game (indy vs san fran) and the Emmys airing in all time zones.
